I think people should be free to choose where they will live regardless of how they are being supported.
November 24, 2010 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm in reply to: Modern Orthodoxy, Chassidus, and the Rambam #712182bezalelParticipantNo, the Ba’al Shem & Chassidim (at least the way the Gaon saw it) advocated the abrogation of your personal responsibility to learn Torah, claimed they were capable of independently making Nissim, and placed the Rebbe on the level of a god (lower case).
Not that any of this is currently true (with minor exceptions), but the claims are way worse then you would think.
The reason that this isn’t currenly the case is because of the efforts of the Vilna Gaon.
bezalelParticipantJust ask your service provider to block all data and messaging.
bezalelParticipantWe definitely should help people live longer, even if the cause of their illness is their own vices. But, why should the rest of us pay for this? Hence, the gov. wants to keep raising taxes on cigarettes. Let them at least pay partly for their future medical care!
But this money isn’t being set aside for tobacco related illnesses, it is just being collected because as a society we have been conditioned to believe that smokers are evil and we can punish them in order to convince them to stop smoking.
bezalelParticipantThe difference is that Sarah was already a gedolah before the 10 year count started. If she gave birth to Yitzchok at 90 and Yishmael was 13 years older than him Sarah was about 77 when hagar conceived which would have been at the end of the 10th year when Sarah gave Hagar to Avraham. If this is true then Sarah started counting at 67.
No, Sarai started counting at 65 when she entered Cannan. She gave Hagar to Avrum when she was 75 and Yishmael was born when she was 76 and had his Bris when she was 89.
bezalelParticipantThose who consistently are Machmir on something that they have a Psak on will inevitably end up being Makil on Bal Tosif.
bezalelParticipantNow that is daughter is married, he needs to work to support the couple (as he was forced to sign), or his daughter will get divorced.
She’s probably better off without the bum.
bezalelParticipantThe government isn’t interested in eliminating smoking. They only want a slight decrease to prove to the public that they are doing something about it. If they were interested in eliminating smoking they could make it illegal to add nicotine and only make nicotine available with a prescription.
bezalelParticipantthey say the ones without a hechsher are no good
The packages with and without the labels are under the same hechsher.
Is it really? Do you have a cite for that? I was under the impression that they make the (same) syrup for everyone in the world.
Mexico heavily taxes corn syrup sweetened drinks.
bezalelParticipantAinOhdMilvado:
There were Jews in Yemen before there were any Muslims there.
bezalelParticipantThat being the case, should we all not emulate many of their upstanding and original practices? I submit that wearing peyos as they do (and the Chasidim have emulated) is how Moshe Rabbeinu had. And what a zchus it would be for us all to emulate.
Whay do you assume that there ever was only one set of “original practices”? Just because the Parsha coloring sheets depict Moshe with long peyos doesn’t mean that’s what he had.
bezalelParticipantI had a classmate whose second name was more “jewish” than his first name. Any teacher who called him by his second name only was simply ignored. It didn’t take long for the teachers to start calling him by his full name.
November 17, 2010 7:35 pm at 7:35 pm in reply to: Black Friday 2010: Slashing prices like crazy #712525bezalelParticipant“November-December holiday shopping season”
It looks like the editors at CNN wanted to get the article picked up by YWN.
bezalelParticipantIt all comes down to how confident you are that it was found.
bezalelParticipantGo to your borough hall and get a copy of the issued permits for the lot in question. It’s not cheap.
If someone were to call 311 (I don’t know if it is allowed) than the city will check if it is legal but they won’t tell the caller the result of their investigation.
bezalelParticipant“Texting is a bit harder to eradicate. Its like a phone today, just more addictive.”
Texting is easy to stop if you are the account holder, just call your service provider and tell them to put a block on text messages. I did this on my own phone so that people would have call me if they wanted someting.
bezalelParticipantAny legal driveway should have a permit on record at the Department of Buildings and the Department of Transportation for the curb cut.
bezalelParticipantBut we need to determine if these actions are having the desired affect or are they just alienating those that they are trying to help.
bezalelParticipantPermanent labels on glass don’t do any damage but is a pain to remove. Do not under any circumstance glue anything to a car’s painted surface.
bezalelParticipantGo to seatguru to find the ideal seat.
bezalelParticipant“Can the homeowner call a towtruck who will charge the car owner to retrieve his vehicle?”
No. You can only have a car towed if it is on your property. For cars parked on the street, only the police can have it towed.
bezalelParticipantAsk them for a copy of their IRS form 990.
bezalelParticipantTry using an ulu or a mezzaluna (I prefer the ulu). It won’t mash but it’s good for chopping.
bezalelParticipantI nominate this thread for closure.
bezalelParticipantAnd your point is?
bezalelParticipantAmazon has CDs and digital downloads.
bezalelParticipantmdd:
So are you saying that anyone who does not understand written hebrew is not medakdek in halochos?
bezalelParticipantI’d like to add that this ride was arranged with the cooperation of the cemeteries. Neither of them were Jewish, one was non-denominational and one belonged to another religion (although I have no idea if this has any relevance).
bezalelParticipantOr turning on a light on shabos.
bezalelParticipantWhy would anyone here be signing up for a Micronesian social site? (no offence meant to anyone from Micronesia)
November 11, 2010 7:46 am at 7:46 am in reply to: Fathers and brothers dancing with the Kallah #709155bezalelParticipantThis is less problematic than a Mitzvah Tantz (unless the kallah is a giyores).
bezalelParticipantchad pami:
You misunderstood me. Their names are mentioned in the title page but both works are simply titled “Shulchan Aruch” If I were to make a statement that “the Baal Hatanya writes in the Shulchan Aruch that…” I would not include the word “Harav”
November 11, 2010 2:30 am at 2:30 am in reply to: Sick and tired of spoiled cholov yisroel milk #708329bezalelParticipantHere’s my theory to explain why many have the preceptipn that CS lasts longer than CY. The people who buy CS usually buy it from supermarkets and those who buy CY get it at grocery stores. The drivers who deliver to grocery stores have many smaller deliveries and being that they have less time per delivery (sometimes delivery is before the store is even opened) the milk may not be under constant refrigeration. Supermarkets generally require the driver to actually deliver the milk to their refrigerator and sometimes the shelves are stocked by manufacturer’s employees and not store employees.
Grocery stores and supermarkets have completely different business models and my experiance with kosher supermarkets is that they are often run like supergroceries
bezalelParticipantThe title page of the Shulchan Aruch Harav only says “Shulchan Aruch”. Harav is only added to distinguish between them when nessasary.
bezalelParticipantWhen davening for people, I think of them and don’t worry what their (or their mother’s) hebrew names are. I only concern myself with their hebrew names when it comes to making a Mi Shaberach.
November 9, 2010 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm in reply to: Teenagers Hanging Around With A Bad Crowd #708100bezalelParticipantWhat does being married have to do with anything?
November 9, 2010 10:18 pm at 10:18 pm in reply to: Parental Resposibility for Damage by Minor Child #708083bezalelParticipantaries2756: Only if the child’s actions are the result of the parent’s negligence. (This is for NYS)
November 9, 2010 7:55 am at 7:55 am in reply to: Parental Resposibility for Damage by Minor Child #708076bezalelParticipantaries2756: The laws vary by state. In NY and NH parents are not financially responsible for the actions of their minor children. Most states have limits to the amount that can be collected from parents but there are a few states that have no limits.
bezalelParticipantSacrilege: The christians use music because the Beis Hamikdosh had music in it. I was told that there is no problem of Chukas Hagoyim for traditions that were origionally jewish (such as flowers on Shavuos).
bezalelParticipantAdditionally, under U.S. copyright law, copying copyrighted material for personal non-commercial usage falls under the “fair use” doctrine and is legal. Even if it is one friend copying for another, without any mass distribution involved.
Did you even read the law?
November 9, 2010 12:23 am at 12:23 am in reply to: Parental Resposibility for Damage by Minor Child #708070bezalelParticipantA minor child does not have to pay for their damages. A married woman is obligated to pay for damages but if she doesn’t have any assets, it is not collectable. The father or husband has no obligaion to pay for damages.
bezalelParticipantHave you spoken to either the menahel or the copyright owner?
bezalelParticipantbalance bar
bezalelParticipantAre the majority men or women? Yes
bezalelParticipantOver-educated? Did I mess the memo that stated there was a limit on education?
Back to the origional question, how many teenage lawyers do you know?
November 4, 2010 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm in reply to: Should There Be An Indication For Gender Under Peoples Names? #711953bezalelParticipantWhat I want to answer will probably not get past moderation so I’ll only post half of it.
I hate it when people use the word “Gender” incorrectly.
bezalelParticipantIt depends if this happens at the state level or the federal level. In the state elections you don’t vote or individual candidates, you vote for the ticket so Y and B win the state vote. If this happen at the federal level it gets complicated. Since non of the candidates for president got a majority a second round of voting takes place in the House of Representitives and A becomes the Vice President
