The song “It’s Still Billy Joel To Me” would be covered by fair use because the subject is Billy Joel’s songs but almost all of his other songs wouldn’t because the origional work is not the target of his parody.
May 15, 2011 7:31 am at 7:31 am in reply to: Maccabeats hit "Candlelight" wasnt original music. Isnt it illegal? #766636bezalelParticipantYou cant have a copyright on a tune.
A song can be copyrighted and creating a new song with a tune from an existing song would be a derivative work and creation of derivative works is a right of the copyright holder.
Think about when you go to a wedding and they play the latest hits is it legal?
This is a different issue. performing rights only apple to public performances. A wedding is a private event.
Did they even sell it?
Yes, but that is irrelevent.
bezalelParticipantKiddush, fleishig, wait, wash, milchig.
Every meal.
We’re Dutch.
j/k
IIRC milchig is never allowed after fleishig in the same meal regardless of how long the meal takes (or how short your minhag is to wait).
bezalelParticipantthat explains why they said it was ALMOST a 100% match.
There is no such thing as an 100% match, that would require the tester to have knowledge that there is no other individual that have the same DNA sequence.

bezalelParticipantThe opening post is still in Google’s cache.
bezalelParticipantThe quality of the music was much better then a typical one man band
its oned by the hall so you dont need to rent it and shlep it each time
One of the first rules for quality sound is “never use the house audio system”.
bezalelParticipantRealize that I wrote “remain cordial and friendly”. In this situation that’s all it calls for. Unconditional love makes them believe that you came to terms with their decision.
Under what conditions should a parent have unconditional love? If there are conditions is it unconditional?
bezalelParticipantDid you get the whole row of seats on the plane?
bezalelParticipantGlad you found it. I have an earlier post from 3 hours ago that is still waiting for approval.
bezalelParticipantThe newer model is a full suspension with 6 inces of travel in the front and rear. The older model just has a front suspension with 3 inces of travel (the exact distance of travel varies by year). The best way to determine the model year is by the color. Since you already stated that you have disc brakes this eliminates pre-2001 models. Here are the colors for 01 throuth 05.
2001: Silver/Red
2002: Blue/Silver
2003: Platinum/Red
2004: Black/Orange
2005: Matte Navy
If your frame is red the easiest way to tell the difference between the 2001 and the 2003 is that the 2001 has an RST fork and the 2003 has a Suntour fork.
bezalelParticipantAre you sure about the names? I tried to post a link to audio that was written by Yaffa Leba Gottlieb and produced by Avrohom and Simone Silverstein but the mods wouldn’t let it through.
bezalelParticipantFuji Thrill??? I hope you’re talking about the older model that was discontinued in 2005. The current Thrill is completely unsuitible for use in BP.
bezalelParticipantMany are helping. It’s just that those helping cannot point to someone who was originally frum and state that that individual is currently frum because of them while people who help those who were not originally frum can make this statement.
bezalelParticipantI considured the Scott P6 when I purchased my hybrid but I ended up going with a Trek FX7.1 because of the price.
bezalelParticipantLearn how to read an IRS Form 990 and ask them for copies from previous years.
Ask for referances and actually follow up on them.
bezalelParticipantAre you kidding? You can’t trust yourself with the danger, but Chazal would say you can trust your children with it?
Actually when it comes to others Chazal say “Judge all men favorably”.
I never stated my position on teenagers having an iPod touch (although if you look through the archives you might find my opinion on the matter).
bezalelParticipantSo do you think Chazal were wrong?
Chazal mean that I shouldn’t trust myself, not that I shouldn’t trust someone else.
bezalelParticipantI’d considure myself an enthusiest but non-cyclists might considure myself a serious biker.
When it comes to recreational routes I usually first find a trail on traillink and than use Google Maps to find nearby roads to complete the loop. My favorite route starts at the Long Valley trailhead of the Columbia Trail. I don’t start off on the trail but instead ride on Hwy 513 to the High Bridge trailhead where I get onto the trail and ride back to Long Valley.
bezalelParticipantThe copyright owner may have a reason for withdrawing the item from the market and we should respect that.
Halacha isn’t concerned with IP rights other than being used as a revenue source.
bezalelParticipantIs this the same Stanley Miller as the chiropractor? His website is: http://www.drstanleyimiller.com/
I believe they are the same. I just wasn’t sure enough to post it.
bezalelParticipantIt would probably be a good idea to contact the copyright holder first.
bezalelParticipantI don’t understand the OP’s premise. What are the prerequisites for being a Chosid that can’t be filled by a Baal Teshuva?
bezalelParticipantThis isn’t a Jews vs. Christians issue here. Its about an oppressed individual (or group of individuals) stereotyping an entire group based on the actions of a subset of that group. there were good and evil bankers just like there were good and evil land owners (you can say that about any profession).
Although I wasn’t there at the time I beleive Barnabas was killed by Jews as were others who attempted to convert Jews.
bezalelParticipantJews weren’t allowed to own land so the made up stories about evil land owners. Christians weren’t allowed to lend with interest so they made up stories about evil bankers.
February 28, 2011 4:00 am at 4:00 am in reply to: Should the yeshivos adopt a smicha system? #744970bezalelParticipantThe yeshivos I know of that have a Smicha program operate it as a masters program. While thes programs are definatly goal oriented it needs to be determined whether yeshivos should be goal oriented.
February 28, 2011 3:55 am at 3:55 am in reply to: China or Glass Dishes used for Mishloach Manos- need Toiveling? #1014142bezalelParticipantNo. Even if they did it wouldn’t help as it is not yet in possesion of the end user.
I was told by a rov that if I am giving a new dish with food as a gift that I should put the food on a layer of paper or plastic.
bezalelParticipantfor the full story:
http://www.oukosher.org/index.php/articles/single_print/1377692
This just leads to more questions.
1) Does the OU rely on the Pri Chodosh or not?
2) Why do they certify so many dishwashing and laundry detergents but *no body soap?
*I’m not certain but I don’t recall seeing a hechser on body soaps.
bezalelParticipantThese situations are inevitible in the “See You on Shabbos” program. You should discuss with your rov whether or not you should be involved with this program.
bezalelParticipantI’m confised by your reasoning. If being Jewish excuses you from being patriotic than you should be proud to refrain from doing patriotic acts. If it doesn’t excuse you than you should be as patriotic as the rest of your school.
I don’t know of any halachic issues regarding placing your hand on your heart.
bezalelParticipantWho shows pictures at 30fps? NTSC is 24fps and pal is something else, but neither of them are 30.
Film is normally 23.976 FPS but there are some systems that use 24 FPS
PAL is 25 FPS
NTSC is 29.97 FPS
ATSC supports all of the above and adds 30, 50, 59.94, and 60 FPS
bezalelParticipantIf they wanted to stop you they could put blockers in. Since they did not, they obviously do not care.
Does your company put RFID tags on all the office supplies and RFID scanners at all the entrances? Obviously they don’t care if you take them for home use.
February 1, 2011 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm in reply to: Amazing story with a well known Rosh Yeshiva! #824207bezalelParticipantWhat makes this story truely amazing is that there is no $1 scratch-off game with a $40,000 prize
bezalelParticipantBeing that i am getting married in one of the five boroughs i guess that means i need to be married by a “licensed” rav. However a friend of mine had it done by his rav who never got registered with nyc. Do you think they check the name and signature?
The city doesn’t license clergy, that would be a 1st ammendment problem. They only require them to be registered.
bezalelParticipantAlthough the two greatest risks associated with cigarettes are mitigated with pipe tobacco you would not be able to call yourself a non-smoker.
bezalelParticipantWhat part of PA? Unless you are staying in Wilmington just getting to the Herr’s factory will take up a good portion of your day.
bezalelParticipantAsk your LOR. Generally a person is not allowed to hold objects while davening but there are exceptions. A determination must be made whether a PDA used as a siddur is such an exception.
bezalelParticipantThere is no reason to think that your money is going to pay the janitor.
Actually a percentage is used to pay the janitor. If the janitor were to be given a six figure salary than a larger percentage would go to the janitor and less to the rabbaim.
However, there are so many important causes to give to, and they are merely trying to stand out.
But they are just diverting tzedokah away from other organizations that are run more efficiently*. As a result less money is left for the true charitable use.
doing a mitzvah is great. getting others to do a mitzvah through yours is greater. therefore money that goes for advertising, is better than money that goes just for the cause, even if the “cause” money makes us feel better.
But they aren’t getting people to give tzedokah*, they are getting people who are already committed to giving tzedokah choose one organization (or cause) over another?
*I’m sure there are some who wouldn’t have given otherwise but the revenue generated from those donors are probably less than the advertizing campaign.
bezalelParticipantI want as much of my donation to go towards the cause that I’m donating to. If I’m donating for the poor, I want as much as possible to go to the poor and as little as possible to go to ad agencies and publishers.
bezalelParticipantIm sure these organatzias have a line of rabbonim backing them, and dont do things without the rabbonims concent.
But the rabbonim might be interested in maximizing income while as a donor I’m interested in maximizing efficiency.
bezalelParticipantand have someone who can claim to be a clergy sign off on the mariage certificate.
This is good for NYS but NYC requires that officiating clergy be registered with the city.

bezalelParticipantAOM -I’m sorry that’s a lawyer joke. How do you know when a lawyer is lying? When his lips are moving!
That joke is so prejudiced.
Some lawyers are women.

bezalelParticipantI think a major problem in our community is that many have asked the same question rather than trying to accomplish something.
bezalelParticipantIf you were really just sharing a good deal you would have stopped at http://livingsocial.com/deals/21336-20-amazon-com-gift-card
bezalelParticipantThe CR rules encourage us to hide our true identities. I see nothing wrong with this.
bezalelParticipantI personally would never wear blue ones but I would wear black ones.
Blue is the new Red.
