Torahis1: im saddened that you think that rabbonim/rebbeim actually get “smashed” up on Purim. ive seen enough rebbeim/rabbonim drinking on Purim to tell you that when they drink, they absolutely DO NOT get “smashed”–they are just VERY happy, to the point where “ad bli dai”–but they know their limits. you can say the talmidim TAKE the fact that their rebbeim are drinking and use it as an excuse to go on a drinking binge, without limits–but the REBBEIM limit themeselves. they fail to see this, or they ignore it.

bklyn19: who says theres one moderator for all topics?? they probably split it up—hey i get that topic–no i do i called it first–that one seems interesting let me grab it before anyone else does…..lol.

and for those pertaining to only men or only women, they give accordingly.

i see no reason why girls/women shudnt be able to moderate.

i dont know what goes on in mesivtas, but from what i hear from my 3 brothers, its better to let them just have “kosher” cellphones i.e. no texting, no camera, no internet, no music… i know that many batei midrashim roshei yeshiva look at boys phones, what does the CR think about THAT?

like feivel said, take a look at this book, “praying with fire.” im on my second round of reading it–maybe 5 minutes a night, and it really puts things into perspective.

im constantly having a hard time with davening, but this book really clarifies things and makes it so much easier to daven without a “how fast can i finish” or “i shudve slept late today”….now its, “take your time, this is your chance to build your relationship with Hashem!!” and “i cant believe i overslept”….it starts to become an integral part of you–we take it for granted that we dont have to daven minyan 🙂

i think something for girls/women to do (who either dont have time or dont know how to bake challos) is to learn hilchos shmiras halashon!!

i started learning the chofetz chaim, a daily companion evry night 2 years ago….its 2 minutes per night, i think its something we all could use as a segulah.

we would never even listen to something bad that someone says about a brother or sister of ours…we wud say you have the wrong person…nope, not my sibling…i think you got the info wrong….WE HAVTA TREAT EVRY JEW LIKE A BROTHER OR SISTER and refuse to speak/listen to/accept Loshon hora about them!

i feel this is so important…sinas chinam, which is caused THROUGH loshon hora, destroyed the Bais HaMikdash!! that mean the only way to bring Moshiach and Bais Shlishi is to have the opposite, which is ahavas chinam, brought about by Jews like you and me who strive to keep hilchos shmiras halashon.

in this zechus may we be zoche to bring Moshiach bimheira biyameinu.

not pashut: i think Joseph was referring to the teenage/adolescent boys that smoke because they think its cool, cuz it looks real sharp to be hanging out on ave J with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth.

i highly doubt that Joseph was implying that the rabbanim you mentioned were c’v baalei gaava.

    MARK TWAIN classics:

–“Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of congress; but I repeat myself.”

–One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives.

–“In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards.”

–To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I ought to know, I’ve done it a thousand times.

–“It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them.”

–“The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.” (reminds me of the story of the little boy who goes to shul but duznt know how to daven, so he just talks to Hashem…this is better than any tefilah some ppl sadly just say by rote!)

a few years ago (i must have been around 10 or something) my older brother, on purim, offered me a cigarette. of course i took one, it was so cool, all the older boys were doing it, and of course i half-killed myself cuz i choked on it…LOL (no joke, but im laughing now that i remember it)—but really, thats what it does, IT KILLS PEOPLE. but the temptation is very powerful. its like a modern-day avodah zora, along with all our other nisyonos that we cant seem to get enough of….

anyway the point of my little anecdote is to say, be sensitive to the fact that these boys have been watching their older brothers&friends hanging out on street corners and looking really, really cool. so i think what needs to be done is show these kids (some not kids, unfortunately) that “COOL” isnt always so good—amalek is known for their midah of kar/coldness, and mikreh/coincidence (Same loshon/shoresh). if we want to win amalek, we need to be HOT and go against their coldness….theres a medrash of amalek cooling bnei yisroel off…forgot how it goes…forgot how i ended up here….

hopefully it makes some sort of sense if you actually got to the end of this post…

but youre right, Joseph, boys officially/legally/wtvr you wanna call it become men at 13.

congrats to wolf and bear inc. for finally realizing your manly status after 5 (boyish, im assuming) years. im waiting for that bracha…..

what is the basis or origin, btw, for giving brachos to others on their hebrew birthdays? anyone know?

in reply to: Gifts on Chanukah – How Often? #628080

in addition to giving presents being chukas hagoyim,

the 25th day of the month of December (whichever way you want to call it)

represents the day that Yosef HaTzaddik went to eshes potifar “laasos tzurcho ima”–this day was chaf hey/ the 25th of the month, and it was the day that the entire mitzrayim annually went to serve avodah zara (this is why potifar wasnt around).

so the 25th day is steeped in tumah since the days of mitzrayim.

it also says, if im not mistaken (and please correct me if i am), “Kihayom hazeh” in the passuk when it describes Yosef going to eshes potifar–“KiHa”=chaf hey=25

what makes you think 18 is the man-turning age.

some ppl never reach that age.

but if you feel youve become a man at such a young age as 18, kol hakavod.

    and mazal tov.

adding to tzippi’s comment: the 4-inches-below-the-knee skirt might cover the knees when sitting normally, but if a girl crosses her legs, which most do very often, the skirt rides up and exposes the bottom knee (the one which is crossed over on by the other leg….hope that makes sense lol)

    to WILL HILL and SHINDY,

none of you sound like Rebs/Rebetzins to me, based on both of your postings under this topic.

i asked once, but i dont mind asking again:

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS TOPIC AS A BATTLEGROUND, however trivial or (pathetically) even funny you may think it to be, I would really appreciate it. i do not want to be the cause of machlokes.

    Thank you.
