just one more shtickl dvar Torah… (this is great the CR gives me a chance to use all my yiddish phrases!)

has to do a little with parshas vaYigash…

    here goes

“Shivim Nefesh”–there were 70 people that went down to Mitzrayim…we all know that really, there were 69, but Yocheved was born on the threshold of Mitzrayim, right before they entered Mitzrayim, to galus.

the Maharal says that the reason Yocheved is born right before entering galus Mitzrayim, that she is one of the 70, is to show us that whenever Hashem brings galus, brings a Makkah, there is ALWAYS a refuah taht comes before it; whats the refuah?

Yocheved was the mother of Moshe Rabbeinu–who is called “moshia shel Yisrael.”

even BEFORE we entered Mitzrayim to galus as shivim nefesh, Hashem created the refuah–

“Hashem makdim refuah lamakkah”—always, even in our times.

may we be zoche to see that Refuah speedily in our days!

–this one will be iyH as a zechus for the chayalim fighting on our behalf in Eretz Yisrael…may they have hatzlacha and shmirah in all they do.

shkoyach, i think the known phrase is “past nisht”….its a fave of my friend’s 🙂

    oh and i agree.

anyway, nossond: i didnt read the Bais haLevi, only the sefer Bikorei Shimo by R’ Shmuel Birnbaum, who brought the Bais haLevi, but thank you for that addition…

getting back to the shidduch situation at hand here….

that last dvar Torah will be as a zechus iyH that e/o in the CR that needs a shidduch will find their bashert bizmano/bizmanah, and may that be as soon as possible!

    MOTZEI SHABBOS VORT

    by rebetzin BYM

Parshas vaYechi tells us that Yaakov wanted to tell the Shevatim when the Geulah would come. Rashi says he wanted “l’galos es haKetz” (to reveal the end), but “Nistama nevua malav”, Nevuah was taken away form him.

the Maharal asks, why is this Passuk even mentioned in the Torah? to tell us, we were SUPPOSED to be told when the Geulah would come, but only to have Yaakov suddenly forget?the Maharal beatifully sums it up in just a few words: the point of this passuk was in order to tell the Shevtaim, and future generations,

“L’galos SHEYAISH ketz”—that there WILL be an end to our galus–we dont know when, but we are assured by the Torah that there will be.

    may the ketz come NOW

    gut voch

–sorry so late, for all the israel habitants

shtikl dvar Torah on vayigash: from bikorei shimo by R’ Shmuel Birnbaum ZTL his yartzeit is not too far away. He quotes the Bais HaLevi: why did Yosef say “ha’od avi chai” and not “avinu?” and also, why were the shevatim so concerned with the tzaar that Yaakov will have if Binyamin isnt safe and not with Yaakov’s extreme tzaar when he found out Yosef was “dead?” their behavior is a stirah.

so the Bais HaLevi answers that the shevatim thought because there are 12 of them, if Yosef is gone, the remaining 11 can “make up” for him and fill his place. Yosef is saying, youre wrong!! it duznt matter how many children a father has, theyre each a special and unique son to their father and can NEVER be replaced. this is why Yosef said “avi” becuase he was letting them know that they were wrong in assuming Yosef could be replaced–because “avi” is his personal father.

same with us–we cant say, its okay if i dont learn tonight because theres thousands of beis midrashim learning instead of me…i dont need to do this particular mitzvah, im sure there are many out there who are doing it…this is WRONG we are each individual children to Hashem and He treats us like that so we need to act like it—thats why the Medrash says “oy lanu yom hadin, oy lanu yom hatochacha”–becuase this is what will happen, well see we were wrong in assuming that we can be lax about things when we are being judged

shtultzy guy, i think it was Rebbe that wrote down the calendar for the next few thousand years, until 6,000.

from what i hear, birchas hachama happens every 28 years, and this pesach will be the third time in history that it will end up on erev pesach taf shin samach tes (14 nissan), the other two being yetziyas mitzrayim and the nes of purim.

taf shin samach tes=tehei shana siman tova

jphone, he was definitely a student of R’ Yehoshua ben Perachya. the story goes that oto ha’ish was walking with his Rebbe and he said hello to a woman walking on the street. R’ yehoshua gave him mussar, yelled at him, idk exactly, and refused to see him ever again. on his deathbed, when oto ha’ish came knocking begging for forgiveness, he still refused to see or forgive him, so oto ha’ish started his own “branch” of Judaism, which evolved into Christianity.

i know for a fact that this the taxi driver DID say to the girl, who is from Monsey, that she should stay out of the city on wednesday. however, we dont know that what he said has any significance.

the police came to my school today to discuss it….they said there is nothing to be alarmed about, if something was going on they would def. know about it. then again, remember 9/11…..but it’s not like any random taxi driver in NYC knew about the attacks. at least not that i know of

    Thanks Joseph.

I recently heard a similar story told to me by Rabbi Ordman, he called it the butterfly effect. theres a huge machine in Zurich that can forecast the weather and they realized that the fluttering of a butterflys wings can affect a hurricane halfway around the world. if this is just in the physical world, imaagine the tremendous ripple effect any small thing we do can have in the spiritual world.

im getting off track: the story is that a Rabbi was pasing by a table of Israeli girls and boys, where the girls were not dressed anywhere within tznius standards, and so he covered his eyes with his hand as he walked past. one of the boys sitting at the table was impressed with what this Rabbi did and ran after him…..this boy became frum in the end…many people think it’s insulting that some men cover their eyes or shield their faces from looking at girls, or cross the street….i commend these people, and look what happened in this situation.

    this turned out pretty long…

ill save my real dvar Torah for my night 🙂

you also asked how the Gemorrah refers to “him” and if he is compared to Bilam. i dont know about the second part of your question, but if youre referring to yushka, i do know that the Gemorrah refers to him as “oto ha’ish,” because they dont want to call him by name, even his Jewish name, Yehoshuah. (kind of like “acher”)

000646 mentioned an authority figure….part of milgrams study was that if the person telling the guy giving shocks was wearing a lab coat, there was a much higher chance that he would go all the way to 400 volts. if not, and he wasnt as professional looking or authoritative, many wouldnt go as far as 400 volts, they would stop beforehand.

frum not crum: i think that is connected to a different experiment, where a professor gathered his college students and separated them into 2 groups, guards and prisoners. for two weeks, they were supposed to act the roles given to them, but after 6 DAYS, they had to stop the experiment because the “guards” were acting in the cruelest ways towards the “prisoners,” their fellow classmates, many of whom needed therapy afterwards because they didnt feel human anymore.
