gotbeer – You’re right about Tosh and other self-made chassidus (Tosher, Kerastirer, etc)

I just would like to see a link and connection of at least the BIG dynasties (i.e. Belz, Satmar, Stolin, Visznitz, Skvere, Gerr, Bobov, and the like) going back to the Baal Shem. I am so clueless who the talmidim of the BESH”T are, and who their talmidim are, etc.

ok let’s start then to rebuild the map right here.

Starting with the father of the Chassidic movement was, of course, the Baal Shem Tov.

    Who were his talmidim?

The Maggid of Meszrich was one. who else?

ok, so here is a question which bothered me since laining on Rosh HaShanah. Please answer if you think you have an explaination. In this week’s parsha we read the story of the Akeidas Yitzchok, an historic event which is dramatic and gripping till the very end.

But what up with the ram??

I mean, it’s seems like a nice gesture on Avrohom’s part to offer up the ram, in place of his son, yada yada yada, but why is it SO CENTRAL to the story?! We blow shofar on Rosh HaShanah, zeicher l’ayil! Why a ram’s horn, why not take a knife as a zeicher for this nisoyon? IDK, it seems so much like just an afterthought, like a side note, a footnote for the epilogue of Akeidas Yizchok. Yet, the Ayil takes such an important role in the story. Why????

jmh – you wrote “It is presumptuous in the extreme to claim to have any idea of why HKB’H does the things he does when and where he does.”

Health was not CLAIMING, but merely asking if CR readers think that there is a POSSIBLE CONNECTION between the two. How many tzaddikim and baalei musser speak of this inyan, that when a natural disaster strikes we should not sit back blindly, but use our brains (like Health) and try to understand why Hashem is doing all this?!

We have no Nevi’im in our dor to tell us what Hashem’s message is, but the least we CAN do is think, ask, and try not to ignore such catastrophic phenomenon.

My 4 year old boy celebrated his (hebrew) birthday in school 2 weeks ago with a nice big cake for him and his classmates. He had such a great time he couldn’t stop talking about it for the next few days.

This past Shabbos, in the middle of the shabbos seudah, it occured to me that it was his english birthday. I announced,”Hey everybody, today is October 27, it’s Shloime’s english birthday!”

My son’s bright eyes opened wide at the news of his birthday, and he excitedly asked, “So now I’m 5??”

I don’t think tzaddiq’s response is THE REASON FOR THE SHIDDUCH CRISIS. he is saying a reasonable point, however, the resounding ‘NO’ is where I disagree. Why would you not consider someone who you really really like after 6-7 dates, and now find out that she takes medication for depression, or is diabetic, etc.? The question from the OP is would you CONSIDER? Would you make a cheshbon, if the shidduch makes sense, and can work out? I don’t think there will be a RESOUNDING ‘NO’, I think many will consider her, and perhaps will overlook her chessoron.

Why on earth is the story of Avrom being thrown into the furnace by Nimrod, NOT in the parsha, whereas the test of Lech Lecha (a seemingly LESS of a nisayon) IS in the parsha?

So I heard from Rabbi Wallerstein (Torah Anytime.com) that the explanation is lke this. The torah is not a history book, to tell us stories stam azoy. If a story is brought down in the torah it is to teach us something, and if a story is NOT brought down it is because Hashem didn’t want it in the torah.

Pshat here can be explained via a beautiful phrase:

It is easier to GIVE UP one’s life ‘al kiddush Hashem’ then for one to LIVE ‘al kiddush Hashem’.

To die ‘al kiddush Hashem’ is a tremendous act of bravery, courage, and strenghth. However it is all over in 1 minute. Once the person is dead, the game is over. That’s all nice, no doubt, and he will get Olam Habbah for that. But Hashem is not interested in putting the whole episode of Uhr Kassdim in His torah JUST to teach us that yeharog v’al ya’avor for Avodah Zora. What Hashem IS interested in, is the ‘lech lecha me’artzecha’, the ‘U’mibeis avicha’, the daily struggles of LIVING al kiddush Hashem. THAT’S what is special in Hashem’s eyes! The davening 3 tefillos EVERY SINGLE DAY with minyon, the wearing tzniyosdik clothing- even on a hot summer’s day, the setting aside time every day for your daily shiur or chavrusa, the times we stop ourselves from speaking L”H, or taking revenge. It is the LIVING ‘al kuddush Hashem’, that takes center stage in the torah. And that’s the lesson of Lech Lecha.

    PARSHAS LECH LECHA

I was always bothered how we really know so little about the avos, yet we must strive to attain their stature. we know so little of their every day normal life routines, their daily interactions with people, etc. All we are exposed to is their great, big, triumphs over the nisyonos that came their way, but not of the little ones. (Unlike the hundreds of stories we read about the Chofetz Chaim’s life or the Chazon Ish, etc.)

    Just saying.

that was very nice. Perhaps you can even add, that Hashem purposely made Noach be busy in such a manner during this time because Hashem was now “starting over” again, and “Olam Chesed Yiboneh” was a vital principal in creating His world.

When I was a bochur in yeshiva, someone once said over in the name of Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l that he felt people rely too much on their daily coffee and it can be detrimental (note what happens by a fast day to coffee addicts). He said before davening he would drink a cup of cold refreshing water instead, y’know just to get the ‘ol body going, and that was good enough. I decided then and there to do the same. I always drink water before running out to shacharis. I only drink coffee occasionally.

R’ Chaim Volozhin was asked by the Russian Minister of Education, at what age do you start to be mechanech your children? He answered, 20 years before they’re born.

This is a famous story, and it’s lesson is beautiful. If you want your children to be a certain way, YOU HAVE TO BE THEIR EXAMPLE. if you want your kid to be a Godol HaDor, you have to be a living example of what a Gadol HaDor should act like. Your training is their training in both middos and what will create their second nature. A parent molds and shapes his child through HIS character and personality. Unbeknownst to you, he picks up on every little thing we do and say, how we act and react.

I asked my rav my question on Noach yesterday, and he pointed me to a fascinating Ya’aros Devash where R’ Yonosson Eibeschitz says that the Keshes in Parshas Noach is in fact a different type of rainbow. It is a rainbow completely of Techeiless color. And as a reminder, the word Techeiless is of the same root word as Kalei (destroy/destruction), which is what HKB”H would do to the world if not for this Bris HaKeshes.

My only problem is with this is, which I only thought about later on, is why then do we recite a brocho on our colorful rainbow that we see if it isn’t the authentic ??? of the Bris HaKeshes?

Out of curiousity, I googled ‘different types of rainbows’ and came up with a few different kinds, but none was a blue/green rainbow 🙁

for the first 2 dates I recommend a quiet place to shmooze. A cafe, a hotel lobby, etc is perfect. After getting comfotable in each others’ company and getting to know “the basics” of your date, you can do more leisure walking around, and go to places where it’s more interesting. I don’t recommend bowling or other sports where you hardly get to do any talking, and is difficult to interact and play at the same time.

As it is a new week I will start the next parsha, but we can still discuss any question that was posed on Bereishis

    PARSHAS NOACH

    Q. Was the rainbow Hashem created (bein hashmoshos on the first erev shabbos -pirkei avos) as a sign for Noach, different than any other rainbow? If it was, how so? If not, isn’t a rainbow a natural phenomenon anyway, so surely this wasn’t the first rainbow to appear?? why was it so miraculous/special to create this with the other special list of stuff bein hashmoshos, if it was just a simple ordinary rainbow?

in reply to: YWN Coffee Room Nightly D’Var Torah #1125231
    BaalHabooze

I saw a nice pshat this past shabbos.

Rashi says that the reason why by the first day of creation it says “Va’yehi Erev Va’yehi Boker Yom Echad” and not Yom Rishon, as the sequence from the other days of the week goes (yom sheni, shlishi, etc), is because since Hashem created spiritual beings (malachim) on the second day, He was therefore the only living Being around, it was Yom Echad, the day of the One.

It always bothered me, why was this so important to say? and if he wasn’t, if malachim were created on that first day. then what? then he’s NOT echad (c”v)? What lesson, yesod, principle do we glean from this that it was “the day of the One”??

So I actually saw in a sefer called Pri Dovid an answer to this question. That it is to tell us something extremely fundamental to our yiddishkeit and hashkofo. He cites different seforim who tell us that He created this world out of Goodness, and that it was created solely for the benefit of Man. Hashem Himself has zero benefit per se and was totally unaffected with His Handiwork. The same Hashem as we know Him now, was the same Hashem before the world came into existance. He is totally out of the realm of space and time and everything else we have in this universe.

This perhaps is what the torah was teaching us on Yom Echad. He was the same one Hashem, even after the world came into being, without any change, benefit, or affect. It was “rak v’ach” a creation for the sole benefit of mankind.
