Unfortunately technically my neighbor is the owner of the 200ft of my backyard for the next 198 years.

No, at most he’s a leaseowner. Who is the permanent owner? And what about the rest of your property?

Did the previous owner give you the deed for the entire property or was that 200ft carved out before you got it?

Are you on Native American land?

I’m confused. Are you saying that no one (including you) previously had title to your back yard and now your neighbor leased it from the public/state/government/crown?

Rice is a pretty poor desiccant. There are a number of commercial products designed specifically to dry electronics (I think most are silica based). If it doesn’t work after the first time rinse it in distilled water and do a second drying session.

It is important for Orthodox teachers in Non-Orthodox schools to realize they often have the upper hand. The Non-Orthodox schools of higher education are not producing enough early childhood Judaic studies teachers and they need Orthodox teachers to make up the shortfall.

And any teacher that accepts such a position should have a Posek on speed-dial.

Guys, I appreciate your enthusiasm in debating your topic, but I feel it is sufficiently different from my original topic.

Mod-permitting, I’d like to ask that you continue your discussion in a different thread.

Perhaps Lior has some information but doesn’t know whether it’s permissible to share it or not. Anyways this thread is a lot more interesting than it would have been if the original question had simply been answered.

Yemeite Jews are certainly not Sephardic and never were. And other Mizrachi Jews are, also, not all Sephardic. Before the Spanish Expulsion of 1492 there were communities of Jews living in the Mizrachi/MidEast countries. They were not Sephardim, though after the Sephardim leaving Spain moved there the communities integrated in large part.

During the first emigration of Yemenite Jews, they had to choose whether to join the existing Ashkenazi or Sephardi communities and they had more in common with the Sephardi community.

Due to the Arab trade routes, the Jews in Iberia, North Africa, and Southwest Asia had enough contact to keep many of their practices in sync.

About Ethiopians: It is a massive Machlokes HaPoskim whether they are Jewish or need Geirus. In the end of the day, everyone seems to hold like R’ Ovadia that we treat them as full-fledged non-Jews until they convert. This isn’t because we don’t believe their history; rather, it’s because if we treated them as Jews (or even Safek Jews), the standard Psak would have to be that we would treat them all as Safek Mamzerim.

You can’t Pasken that someone is not jewish simply because of the ramifications that would occur if they were jewish. And regarding the Mamzer issue there is a Chazakah that a Mamzer whose status is unknown will not pollute the gene pool so there is a limit on how far back research is required.

According to sefer eleh maasi, they entered (approximately) 29.624656, 32.341608 and exited at 29.829776, 32.476191

I never understood the reasoning behind the claim that they exited on the western side of the Red Sea when it is obvious shortly later that they were on the eastern side.

I don’t think it’s possible. In Israel all costs associated with text messaging are billed to the sender. You can’t send a message unless the recipient’s phone company has a way to charge you (or your service provider) for delivering the message.

i hope ur not serious, everyone sets them up right to left and lights left to right (reverse order)

Not the Vilna Gaon. I think his reasoning is that the initial light is the Mitzvah and the rest are for Hiddur. The widespread Minhag treats all the lights as the Mitzvah and the order is based on Ma’alin Bakodesh.

I prepare the lights in the same order they are lit but I can’t say that it’s due to Minhag.

Insurance companies will pay for lung cancer treatment but won’t pay a doctor to spend 15 minutes with a patient to talk about how important it is to quit smoking.

Ironically the original meaning of the word “doctor” isn’t someone that practices medicine. It is someone who has enough expertise in a particular field to be able to teach that knowledge to someone else.

But I’m sure you knew that already, this if for others who may be following along.

If you haven’t, you should also ask your landlord if he would partially pay for the line, since it does improve his apartment for future tenants.

Unless the tenant is paying for utilities, the landlord wouldn’t want the line. Whether it’s even permitted would depend on the lease agreement.

in reply to: Question about Glatt #1049397
    Participant

Once upon a time very long ago, in the early to mid – 1900s, kosher butchers sold meat that may or may not have been considered glatt.

Are you referring to Ashkenazi Europe where Glatt was a virtually unpracticed Chumrah (at least amongst the religious masses) or to America where there was so much corruption that the Ridbaz fled Chicago with his family on Shabbos because their lives were in danger.

Today’s standards of kashrus are higher and virtually no frum person I know of would consider eating meat that is not certifiably glatt kosher.

None of the Hashgachos I use would certify non-glatt meat but if a Shochet I trust would end up with non-glatt meat, I wouldn’t hesitate to eat it.

For the wildly speculative, imagine that in 50 or so years, the charedi population share has risen to a super majority, and lo alenu, the Torah world and culture in EY were to be threatened or subjugated by a foreign force. Would the masses take up arms and other forms of direct resistance?

The premise is flawed, there were only brief periods where the majority of Israel was religious and the period that Chanukah occurred was not one of them.

How about invent a hot water system that can be used on Shabbos. We have urns for coffee. Why not make the actual boiler work in a similar way so that you can turn on the hot water in the sink/shower to wash dishes etc.

Much of England is plumbed with that type of system (if you turn off the supply). The downside is that the hot water there is not potable, that’s why they have separate faucets for hot and cold.

If one is makpid on cholov Yisroel,

Yet you (or at least I) wouldn’t say that someone is Makpid on Bishul Yisroel, in contrast I would say that someone is Makpid on Pas Yisroel.

in reply to: Keurig Fans are the Biggest Trolls #1218447

What’s the logic of being makpid on eating Cholov Yisroel but not makpid that the keilim remain Cholov Yisroel?

Because having a Chumrah to only eat CY doesn’t make non-CY into Issur. But if you hold that non-CY is real Treif, it would affect the Keilim.

Why? There bulb shape cups that say oil candle holders on the box.

Because the wick can float to the side, putting the flame in direct contact with the narrower top.

in reply to: Noisey floating wicks – advice needed #1044825
    Participant

I previoudly used the metal holders but they were too long to clean.

That’s what pipe cleaners are for. But you need to get real ones from a tobacco shop, the ones designed for crafts don’t clean well. I like metal holders just long enough to keep the wick straight but short enough for the flame to drop down to soak up oil from the cup bottom.

I was told never to use oil without water below as the glass could overheat. But that would only happen if the flame touches it directly.

I never noticed such a warning on any cups.

If you do use floating wicks, only use them with straight walled cups, not globe shaped cups.

Timestamps can get messed up if there is a discrepancy between the time zone settings on the serving host and the forum software. It could be that something on the server has the old DST rules. But I still don’t know why that would affect ivory any differently than other users. I don’t recall ever telling YWN what my time zone is.

in reply to: Excel Q – Adding up times #1041867
    Participant

In the cell where you want the total,

    type

    =SUM(E2:E32)

That won’t work due to the way Excel stores its dates. Lets say you work from 9-5 5 days a week. When you enter “9:00 AM” Excel stores the value of 0.375 which is short for “1/0/1900 9:00:00” and when you enter “5:00 PM” it stores the value of 0.708333 (or “1/0/1900 17:00:00”). When you subtract these you’ll end up with 0.333 (or “1/0/1900 8:00:00”). If you add up the entire week you’ll end up with 1.666 (or “1/1/1900 16:00:00”). If you attempt to display this in 12 hour format it will just display as “4:00 PM”

in reply to: Excel Q – Adding up times #1041866
    Participant

It has to do with how Excel stores times internally. I could go into a lengthy discussion about how Excel stores time values but instead I’ll just tell you how to fix it. Change the format of column E to a decimal number and change the formulas in column E to “=(D2-C2)*24”. This will give you a decimal representation for the hours. If you need to see the actual minutes or want an in depth explanation let me know.

i was planning on selling the idea to a company (its a game and i wanted to sell it to hasbro)

None of the big toy companies will even consider looking at your idea. The last thing they want is to get sued because a product they make has similarities to an idea they once saw. Once you have a real product you can try selling it to them.
