What does the video show? (streaming media is blocked here, and I doubt I’ll have a chance to look when I get home).
April 29, 2011 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm in reply to: Anyone here into details of tomorrow's Royal Wedding? #762705A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantMy point is that the Windsors do not seem to possess any particular merit, other than their family tree. If they hadn’t been part of that lineage, I doubt anyone would have ever heard of any of them, except perhaps Princess Anne because she particpated in an Olympics. However, as Royals, they are the world’s ultimate celebrities. Otherwise, why would anyone have even paid attention to this wedding?
April 29, 2011 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm in reply to: Anyone here into details of tomorrow's Royal Wedding? #762699A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantOK, I ws being flippant, since those goyim all seem to take the idea of marriage very lightly. Almost every British king has had a mistress (or two). Anyone ever hear of Henry VIII, just for starters?
April 29, 2011 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm in reply to: Anyone here into details of tomorrow's Royal Wedding? #762694A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantClairvoyant, her husband philandered first. To be honest, being married to that dolt who’s next in line to the throne is a good excuse. But in reality, Diana was young and naive, and really didn’t understand what she was getting herself into. It appears that Kate has a number of advantages over her, especially maturity and a better spouse!
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantSurely asking the young lady to put her magazines in her room when you visit shouldn’t be construed as too outrageous, even if she does mumble something about her “frummie relatives” under her breath. She’s not a young man, so she likely doesn’t understand your concern.
We once went to visit a Rosh Yeshiva for Shabbos. His wife told me that when she gets catalogs from department stores, she still pulls out the pages with lingerie and bathsuit ads. She said “even though the RY is an old man, he’s still a man”. His daughters used to cut out inappropriate pictures from news magazines for him. We stopped buying the NY Post because there was almost always a scantily clad woman on page 2, and my teenage sons didn’t appreciate it.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantActually, they don’t make Ipod’s in 30G anymore, except for the Itouch which is web-enabled (pretty much the same as the Iphone, except without a phone). If you’d rather avoid that, go with the Ipod classic which comes with a much larger drive. If you’re looking for small, think Nano (max is 16G) or Shuffle. My son has a classic with 160G and he has it loaded with shiurim, which are of course, much larger then music files. Plus photos and backups from his computer. I have his old 30G video and enjoy it very much since I can put enough on there to cover any “mood” of what I want to listen to without having to sync it very often.
No matter which way you go, it’s a great product!
April 29, 2011 12:28 pm at 12:28 pm in reply to: Anyone here into details of tomorrow's Royal Wedding? #762676A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantI’ll check it out on youtube over the weekend. What’s always fascinated me about the Windsors is how, if they hadn’t happened by a total accident of birth to be born into this lineage, they’d be the most common of commoners. None of them are particularly intellectual, and other then the late Princess Margaret (Elizabeth’s sister), not much in the personality department either. And the looks in the family only come from those who married in (Diana and Kate especially). But there is something fascinating about the concept. In fact, one of the reasons we in our generation often have difficulty relating to the mushals (sic) about kings is because to us, royality is somewhat of a joke.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantNext time you visit with them, bring them a copy of Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. It’s a box full of worthless trivia, and while much of it focuses on popular culture, it is clean.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantMany years ago, one of my husband’s Rebbeim told him that rock n’roll wasn’t really music, so he could listen to it. Hey folks, chill, the Rebbe was joking with him.
Music is something I truly love, so it’s difficult giving it up. I’ll be resynching my Ipod, taking off the music and putting on more shiurim.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantBounty markets extensively to BJ’s and Costco, so for those of us who like to buy in bulk, it’s often the most likely choice – especially since both warehouse stores almost always have a markdown in their monthly coupon books for Bounty.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantFor any of you who can’t bear to eat chometz again, even for Shabbos, we have an unstarted box of hand shmurah available.
April 28, 2011 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm in reply to: able to hear Jewish singers on the internet :( #761961A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantJewish singers, just like all other types of singers, are entertainers. While I’m doubtful that too many singers outside the velt have done so much as ours in terms of Chesed, it’s still what they do for parnasa. Some have a day job, some don’t. If a top Jewish artist (think Lipa, MBD, Avraham Fried) sells 20,000 CDs that’s probably considered a huge success. In the secular world, that’s what a top artist gives out as part of their promotion.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantThe general rule of thumb is don’t use the first 3 or last 3 sheets of paper towels for Pesach because they contain glue. Many Posekim recommend to their kehillas that they don’t use R’Blumencrantz’s Pesach guide because of chumrahs such as the one you refer to.
But don’t worry about it, it’s almost a year till next Pesach, by which time there’s sure to be new and exciting chumrahs to deal with.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantI know for sure that the mods objected to something I posted earlier this afternoon, because it never made it on to that particular thread.
April 27, 2011 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm in reply to: Are No-Iron Dress shirts (like Paul Fredrick, etc) REALLY absolutely no iron? #785125A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantBTW, I happened to be in Century today, and noticed that not only do they have a lot fewer Eagle shirts, but also that they’ve gone up by about $5-6. Wish I’d bought by guys some before Pesach!
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantWe got the Pesach stuff put away within 2 1/2 hours. By then, our chometz belonged to us again, so we ripped into the box of Cheerios that had been sold over Pesach.
This morning I had a nice fresh bagel. Now I’m happy.
April 22, 2011 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm in reply to: If you could live anywhere, where would you live? #890955A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantOutside of Brooklyn, but in NY.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantYesterday I got a piece of mail from SeasonsNY that looked like an invitation. It invited me to sign up for the sale alerts, but their website wasn’t set up yet. Now that’s poor marketing.
Early rumors are that it’s modeled after Pomegrante. To be honest, I don’t see how or why Queens can support a high end grocery. But they’ve had about 6 months to do their homework, so we’ll see.
In my opinion, Aron’s is not as good now as it was when it first opened. Their meat and poultry are not so great in my opinion, and I find the layout of the store disorienting.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantAnd it can’t be mentioned enough times what a benefit TorahAnyTime.com has been! I’m off now to see if I have that shiur referred to here from Rabbi Keleman (I know I have quite a few of his on my Ipod). One of my son’s has found virtually every shiur available and has thousands on his computer!
Cute anecdote about R’ Keleman’s shiur on “Why Jews Don’t Celebrate Xmas”…. I have a coworker who is a J.. Witness. One year she was trying to compile info for a presentation to her church on why Xmas is a pagen holiday. I passed along an email I’d received based upon that shiur, and she found it helpful (there was no Das Torah in what I gave her – I edited it first).
April 12, 2011 12:20 pm at 12:20 pm in reply to: Are No-Iron Dress shirts (like Paul Fredrick, etc) REALLY absolutely no iron? #785114A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantCentury 21 carries a shirt called Eagle that wears very well, no iron. For weekday, oxford, Kirkland is very good (Costco’s brand). Both are reasonably priced as well. How much are the BB no-irons?
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantAs I’ve been doing Pesach cleaning, I’ve been listening to many of Rabbi Wallerstein’s Pesach shiurim on my Ipod (I have a little speaker on my counter, much easier then having earphones on). They are amazing and inspiring!
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantIt’s somewhat obvious.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantAlso check the community listings on luach.com.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantThe solution in another boro, that has a main thoroughfare running right down the middle of it, is that every year they close the street for x amount of time. As I understand it, it’s generally done on a Sunday morning when it’s not going to inconvenience too many people. This was R’Moshe’s solution. The eruv is recognized universally as being kosher.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantThe house! It will last a long time, the wedding will encompass about 6 hours (that includes getting made up and photography). We made a wedding at Tiferes Mordechai, and were more then happy with it. But most important, the Chossan & Kallah are having a happy life together. Our community has gotten so out of focus.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantJust another reason I’m glad we don’t live in Brooklyn. R’Moshe said our eruv is kosher. There’s a phone number to check on its status erev Shabbos (and with this year’s weird weather, that’s been necessary – after all, we’re talking about thin wires). When in Brooklyn for Shabbos, we do not use the eruv.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantOMG, my first date with my husband was to the Olive Tree!
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantA cup of coffee. Even instant will get rid of the headache that often accompanies a fast. Then lasagna and cheesecake, the latter because it’s light. The rest of the family include OJ in their break fast.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantIn a boro that isn’t Brooklyn. But don’t think I’m a snob, I married a man from Brooklyn, and a good chunk of his family still live there.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantTen points if you can guess which boro I don’t live in, B”H.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantI’m loving this thread. Reliving my childhood. Too bad kids today don’t have as much fun as we did, playing “in front of the house” until your mom called you in for dinner. Now they’re expected to know in Pre-1A (a fancy name for kindergarten) what we knew in 1st grade. And I hear the public schools in NYC are making even more ridiculous requirements, which, of cousre, we’ll have to emulate in yeshivas.
BTW, what was a typical yeshiva tuition in say the ’50s and ’60s in NYC? Most of us moms who work now are doing so because that’s the only way a family can send their kids to yeshiva.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantfun grating carrots
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantBlabla, first of all, I wish you a complete refuah shelayma. Although we usually can’t figure it out at the time, ultimatley Hashem doesn’t put any challenge in front of us that we won’t eventually see our way through. That realization has helped me over many humps. I know that depression can be debilitating, especially when you don’t even want to get out of bed. But the fact that you reached out here is a positive step, because it shows you want to feel better.
Several previous posters had great ideas, such as force yourself out of the house, try to do as much chesed as you can, keep your mind busy, watch a funny video, and physical exercise. If your home situation is problematic, try to go away for Shabbosism. If you don’t have a Rebbe, family or friends to whom you can go, then sign up with Shabbat.com, and they’ll place you!
Hang in there, the worst may already be behind you!
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantNow that I think of it, I didn’t either. Maybe they’ve got technical issues?
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantAnd playing in playgrounds that didn’t all look identical. When we skinned our knees, we had a boo-boo, not a lawsuit.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantMost likely not. Copyright laws et al.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantHooray, it’s almost lunchtime! This thread is making me hungry too.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantIt’s commonplace to leave the container for the non-dairy creamer on the table when serving it after a meat meal, for example, offering coffee at the end of Shabbos lunch with dessert. That way it’s known that it is not real milk, as opposed to putting the soy milk, rice milk, whatever, into a creamer.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantOh, and Brisker, please throw out those mock shrimp in your freezer – you know, the product that was a big hit a few years ago at the Kosher Fest.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantGetting this thread back on track, since we are talking about the Subway. Yummy and everyone else who questioned “why call it Subway”, that’s because when the owner decided to open this business, they bought into a franchise. Just like kosher Dunkin’ Donuts shops do, and briefly, Nathans tried to. When the first kosher pizza shop (I think it was in Canarsie) opened, had there been a CR back then, someone would have accused them of eating like the goyim. Ditto kosher Chinese, why do we have to substitute veal for pork and serve spare ribs. I’ll put my money on a bet that there is no one on this board who hasn’t eaten kosher chinese, sushi or pizza, just to name a few types of restaurants we “copy”. And Kosher Delight probably was inspired by McDonalds. I could go on and on, but I won’t, because I think you get the point. When you buy into a franchise, which costs less then starting totally from scratch and provides name recognition – an important aspect of marketing – then you must use the name. And if you’re not part of a franchise, then you can’t use the name “Subway” because it’s a registered trademark.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantCostco is having a sale on a 2TB Seagate external drive this month. $99 with the coupon which members would have received in Feb. coupon book. That sounds like a very good deal to me. Ideally, I’d prefer a networked drive since our computers are in different parts of the house, but at the minimum I should be able to set it up as a shared drive, perhaps putting the USB into the router?
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantHellman’s Low Fat is a very good substitute. However, the fat free is vile, not worth it at all. Better to use the former in moderation then ruin whatever it is you’re adding mayo to.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantDo you have any idea how many bochurim eat Subway on mishmar night? The kosher Subway in my community clearly says “Glatt Kosher”, and the toda is prominently displayed. Love The Wolf’s comment!
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantPlaza Hotel

A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantIn Boro Park, Linda Merkin.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantThere is no free lunch. If you pile up a lot of airline miles on a credit card, you’ve also piled up a lot of debt – unless you’re paying the full amount due every month. No credit card gives you the miles totally gratis. Sign up deals also include conditions such as “spend $1,500 in the first four months”. But if you had the $1,500 to spend, you could buy the ticket. If you have a credit card, buy your ticket, and then work like crazy to pay it back ASAP.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantDefinitely I Love Lucy. I didn’t watch it that often, but I seem to remember that the Cosby Show was clean. Perhaps the last sitcom where parents weren’t portrayed as morans ala Homer Simpson. There are a lot of these “classic” shows on hulu.com, we were watching Dick Van Dyke last week.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantMazel Tov, Chazak! I told the manager at the end of the evening that I’m sorry i don’t have another daughter, LOL. But will recommend it to future daughter-in-laws.
A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantWhat does happen with all the leftovers from simchas? I think, in the case of a bris, that many times people have to leave to get to work, and therefore, take along the bagel sandwich. As for a chasuna? I don’t know – we took home food after a son’s Bar Mitzvah, but forgot to after other simchas. Hopefully, it’s going to Tomchai Shabbos, Masabia, or some other worthwhile cause, and not straight into the garbage.
