The only reason why we don’t do it today is because we don’t have a court today authorized to carry out the death penalty. Otherwise we would do it today. It is still the same prohibition.
avhabenParticipantCan one touch one’s best friend’s sister?
The Torah doesn’t differntiate between a best friend’s sister and a niece.
avhabenParticipantAre you sure? Because the still haven’t completed the count of the the vote returns in Alaska.
avhabenParticipantSounds like you married your husband to mooch off his income.
avhabenParticipantA neice is no different than any other strange girl is concerned, as far as the impermissibility to touch her.
avhabenParticipantA neice is no different than any other strange girl is concerned, as far as the impermissibility to touch her.
avhabenParticipantNot too many people vote based on who they think will win.
avhabenParticipantinterjection: funnybone said he thinks someone who can afford a 10-day international vacation will probably be happier than someone who can “only” afford a 2-day vacation to Orlando.
Agree or disagree?
avhabenParticipantDoes anyone agree with funnybone that a person who can afford a 10-day vacation, cleaning help and eating in restaurants will usually be a happier person than someone who cannot afford those things?
November 2, 2012 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm in reply to: Newly Assuming Managerial Duties at Employer #902302avhabenParticipantWhat should be done about the slackers?
avhabenParticipantThere are Chassidic people who are unhappy with their lives in the fold. To escape, they leave the derech altogether
And there are MO people who are unhappy with their lives in the fold. To escape, they too leave the derech altogether. (And this, in fact, occurs at a far higher rate among them, as R. Pruzansky noted.)
And so, there should be programs that allow them to go where they’re more comfortable and remain on the derech.
Ditto for the MO. 1) Why aren’t you advocating organizations to help transition MO Jews to a Chareidi way of life? 2) Why has only the reverse occurred to you?
avhabenParticipantWolf: No such organization is needed any more than we need an organization to turn MO Jews into Satmar Chasidim. In fact, a much stronger case can be made for the latter, considering the tremendous OTD rate among MO Jews, and that it would be better to convince as many of them to become Yeshivish or Chasidish where the OTD rate is considerably less.
avhabenParticipantfunnybone: My question wasn’t about getting thrilled; it was about happiness.
I understand you to feel that if a person wants more than, say, a two day trip to Orlando and their standard of vacation is a 10 day getaway to Israel, they may be an unhappy person if they can’t afford what they want.
Doesn’t that also imply that if they cannot afford air travel altogether they will likely be unhappy?
November 1, 2012 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm in reply to: Newly Assuming Managerial Duties at Employer #902297avhabenParticipantThank you both for your advice.
Quick question: Is your advice based on what you, as an employee, would like from a manager or based upon what you believe is in the best interests of the company?
😉

avhabenParticipantfunnybone: Are you implying that not being able to afford a costly (i.e. other than a low or no cost) vacation makes one less happy?

October 31, 2012 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm in reply to: Joe Biden: TransXXXXXX Discrimination Is 'The Civil Rights Issue Of Our Time' #902013avhabenParticipantCrisis: What you are saying is that Biden is a liberal zealot since only they care about this issue (as you say.)
While you correct about that, you are incorrect about your other point. The conservatives do not seek to repeal food stamps and the like. So we can indeed support traditional social values and conservatives.
avhabenParticipantIsn’t the Golan outside the halachic boundries of E”Y?
(I know Eilat is in chutz l’aretz.)
avhabenParticipantOTB: Please explain how you think wealth makes suffering less uncomfortable.
October 31, 2012 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm in reply to: VAS License Plates on a Non-Emergency Vehicle #1031261avhabenParticipantIs it an abuse of NY’s L&S laws if a member flashes his lights or siren for a second if another driver is blocking the street in front of him when he is driving off duty?
October 31, 2012 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm in reply to: VAS License Plates on a Non-Emergency Vehicle #1031259avhabenParticipantHow do you easily fight parking tickets?
And couldn’t you just as easily get dismissed a parking ticket received off-duty using the same method you use to easily dismiss on-duty parking tickets?
avhabenParticipantPostponing is problematic from the Torah’s standpoint. See the second letter here:
http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=42921&st=&pgnum=221
You only need a minyan to have the chasuna. It’s better for it to go on schedule.
October 30, 2012 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm in reply to: VAS License Plates on a Non-Emergency Vehicle #1031255avhabenParticipantHow do members get tickets, received while on call, dismissed?
(And wouldn’t that work off call, too?)
avhabenParticipantHopefully the went on schedule. It is always best to not push off a Chasuna.
October 30, 2012 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm in reply to: VAS License Plates on a Non-Emergency Vehicle #1031253avhabenParticipant2scents: You missed my question in the Double Parking thread whether you were able to get the double parking ticket you received when picking up an elderly passenger dismissed using your Hatzalah membership?
avhabenParticipantjust my hapence: That they use this pronounciation in davening proves it is a 100% valid and kosher pronounciation in tefila. Regrdless of all the theories of its origins.
avhabenParticipant2scents: Did you use your Hatzala membership to get the ticket dismissed?
avhabenParticipantThis is an extremely valuable thread. Rabbi Pruzansky shlita brings much to the table with his raising the cries of this OTD crisis, and much more importantly Rabbi Pruzansky’s very wise suggestions to his own MO brethren.
Rabbi Pruzansky’s column should be read out as a Shabbos drasha at every MO shul.
avhabenParticipantHaLeiVi: What can be done about it to fix the parking crisis?
avhabenParticipantThe side streets (off the avenue) are often just as full as the avenue.
avhabenParticipantIt isn’t illegal if someone is sitting in the driver’s seat.
avhabenParticipantPerhaps some folks took up Rabbi Pruzansky’s wise suggestions to alleviate the problems and hopefully correct the terrible situation.
avhabenParticipantCuriosity: Similar to your comment, everyone should keep their oy or oh, whatever their mesorah may be.
avhabenParticipantHealth: When did you become a posek?
avhabenParticipantI am much nicer irl.
avhabenParticipantThere is nowhere to pull over. The pumps and driveways (actually there aren’t many driveways on the commercial avenues) are blocked too. So, while your wife runs into the grocery, where exactly are you supposed to wait?
avhabenParticipantDY: Until, another 30 years later, their children are gone too.
October 28, 2012 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm in reply to: Very Stale Heimishe brand Potato Chips with no date? #900962avhabenParticipantDidn’t look at the dates, just the stale taste.
October 28, 2012 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm in reply to: Very Stale Heimishe brand Potato Chips with no date? #900960avhabenParticipantI never had such a problem with any of the heimishe brands. I have had such a problem with national brands.
avhabenParticipantRaglayim L’davar is a Psak Halacha by the Posek Hador, Rav Yosef Shalom Eliashev. I know the mo oppose Daas Torah, but advocating eschewing Halacha as ruled upon by our poskim, because the goyim passed a law saying otherwise, is a new low. The fact of the matter is that abuse occurs in the modern community, where co-mingling is the norm, at a far greater rate than in the traditional Orthodox community. Yes, it is appropriate that the traditional Orthodox community defend itself against the canards and attacks spread against it by a deeply problematic modern community.
avhabenParticipantAsk military wives why it is bad.
October 28, 2012 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm in reply to: How Many Read the Coffee Room, But Do Not Post? #920482avhabenParticipantThe radio talk shows get many callers who introduce themselves to the host as “Hi, I’m a long-time listener, first-time caller.”
I’m tickled everytime a new poster is challenged how a brand-new poster can know so many intimate details of various members if they “really” are a new member. Becuase they’ve been reading for a long-time before ever posting!
avhabenParticipantDon’t forget that parents abusing their children is a much much greater and prevelent problem.
avhabenParticipantI pay AT&T 5 cents a minute for long distance.
avhabenParticipantInstead of all the hand-wringing and talk, we need action. We need to start being mekarev, with kiruv outreach efforts, towards our Modern Orthodox brethren at-risk of assimilation R”L. Where are all the kiruv organizations? In addition to reaching out to the Reform, Conservative and secular yidden, they must extend their efforts to MO communities around the country.
October 23, 2012 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm in reply to: Would You Marry A Divorcee? (If you were never previously married.) #900511avhabenParticipantWhy is the Halacha that a Kohen cannot marry a gerusha (female divorcee)?
Obviously, being a gerusha is considered a mum (defect). Therefore a Kohen (who are on an elevated level) cannot marry one. And the mum isn’t the simple fact that she was already married, as the Halacha allows a Kohen to marry an almana (widow). The mum is her being a divorcee.
[The above issue does not apply to a man who divorced his wife. He has no inherent restrictions on whom he can later marry. And he has no special status in Halacha any different than a never-married man.]
avhabenParticipantOomis was quoting aurora, who originally made the comment you re-quoted. Aurora is the 2002 law grad.
avhabenParticipantNOMTW: The point is a very Jewish one. It is abundantly clear from Halacha that men and women are not treated “equally” in a marital relationship. Each one has their own — and very different — defined roles. This does not make one “inferior” to the other. Though it is correct to define it as different.
