This is just one in a long line of things society has legalized in its quest to become the most hedonistic society in the history of mankind. Anu mashkimim…., Anu Ratzim…., they are doing us a favor by drawing the lines and making the distinctions more clear for us. When things are black and white, decisions are not difficult.
November 14, 2013 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm in reply to: Tzedakah for tuition crisis – NEED DONORS #986825apushatayidParticipantYossi, I dont know what reality you live in. No, the 4th grade does not cost more than the 3rd, however, the expenses of the yeshiva for electricity, food, cleaning staff, insurance, teachers, rabbeim etc. do go up every year. Yes, many, many parents struggle to pay tuition, even a small percentage of the requested amount, and yes, if someone is aware of a situation by all means call the yeshiva and make a payment for them. However, contributing to the yeshiva accomplishes the same purpose, in fact, might even be better than your suggestion. If the coffers are full and salaries and bills are paid the yeshiva is in a position to reduce the tuition they charge and be more flexible with the scholarships they hand out. So, before additional tzedaka organizations are created, people should be sure to answer the phone when someone calls before the yeshiva dinner.
apushatayidParticipantThis idea is already in practice. However, the tzedaka is not c alled menuchas hanefesh, it is called the annual dinner, the chineese auction and all the other fundraising tools that are used. Yeshivos are able to give larger scholarships when they have the money available to do so. Support your local Yeshiva so that they are able to teach everyone regardless of their ability to pay.
November 13, 2013 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm in reply to: Why are they so into Burberry in Williamsburg? #986751apushatayidParticipantThis thread is getting crazier by the post.
apushatayidParticipantSuppose I had wheels. Would I be a bicycle?
November 13, 2013 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm in reply to: Why are they so into Burberry in Williamsburg? #986744apushatayidParticipantHmmm…was just in Willib last night. Saw lots of black, and black and for color, some black. No tartan patterns.
apushatayidParticipantIf they would run a campaign asking people to keep the taryag segulos, there would be many more shomrei mitzvos. A part of me says that this is really all part and parcel of reaching out to the “me generation”. No longer do people give to worthy causes, now they put money into a chineese auction in the hopes of winning a prize, the flashier the prizes the better the organization does. They are just tapping into the whats in it for me mentality, instead of dangling a new dining room set or trip to e’y in front of potential donors, they dangle a segula.
apushatayidParticipantMy opinion. If you are not the Rav or one of the appointed gabboim in the shul it is not your place to remove anything from a public BB. If you believe their is a halachic or hashkafic problem with the content of the sign, speak to the Rav or one of the gabboim.
November 12, 2013 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm in reply to: Filling out an applicationdeceased parent #987407apushatayidParticipantWhy is this a difficult scenario? You write that your father was niftar, so by fathers name write Reb Ploni A’h. If the person reading your application cant get their brain around the fact that his only occupation and place of davening is in the yeshiva shel maalah, and that the only contact info would be via a seance, well, I dont think you are obligated to worry about such dolts.
apushatayidParticipantEven apushatayid like me can guarantee that no matter what shitta you follow to calculate your zmanim all are in agreement that you can never go wrong giving tzedaka, no matter which 9 minute segment of the day it is.
apushatayidParticipant“Please try to articulate your concerns in a clearer way.”
His wife is probably writing on a blog somewhere how her husband has some problem with her housekeeping, but isnt being clear what the problem is and how it frustrates her to no end.
apushatayidParticipantI have to hand it to google. they really have their algorithms down to a science. I happened to disable ad blocker earlier today, and when opening this thread there was a google ad for todaysmaid.com 🙂
DY. Whats a dash between friends!
apushatayidParticipantIn all fairness to Kupat Hair, on their own website they claim this is the 1st time they are promoting the 9th year portion of the “9s segula”. Until now it was just the 9th month, day etc… this year based on additional work they calculated is the 9th year of the yovel.
apushatayidParticipantDo your definitions of a clean home differ? Are your expectations of cleanliness such that you expect to be able to lick the floors, while she is happy that there are no visible crumbs? If your standards are different and she says get a cleaning lady to meet your standards, then she is right, hire a cleaning lady. she is your wife, not your cleaning lady. I also agree that since she is pregnant, you agree to hire one until 68 weeks after the baby is born b’ezras hashem to give her time to get back on her feet.
apushatayidParticipantI think it is safe to say that a woman will have a difficult time understanding what goes through the mind of a man, while a man will have a tough time trying to understand what it is that makes women want to dress a certain way.
(I hate using the term tzniyus as a verb, but it seems such a common usage I will use it for my point) Acting tsniyusdikly can also be attracting, as evidenced by the chazal that Boaz “noticed” rus. It isnt necessarily the “attracting” part that is in poor taste (one can make a positive impression too), it is what one does to attract the attention that can be problematic.
apushatayidParticipantCall your Rav. If you dont think he is reliable, get another.
apushatayidParticipant“People tell the story of the Chofetz Chaim……”
I heard the story and it was Rav Dessler. Perhaps they both made the same point.
apushatayidParticipant“I have a leather jacket”
I have leather tefillin straps.
apushatayidParticipantThe Rebbe Rashab of Lubavitch. His name was Shalom Dov Ber.
apushatayidParticipantOne of the Geonim was named Mar Rav Shalom Gaon.
apushatayidParticipantbklynmom, so, you were wearing leather skirts in 2011?
November 5, 2013 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm in reply to: What time an 18-year-old bachur should be home motzei Shabbos? #985226apushatayidParticipantSo, the phenomenon is real. It doesnt change the reality that tired people prefer to stay in bed. Am I completely misunderstanding you?
November 5, 2013 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm in reply to: What time an 18-year-old bachur should be home motzei Shabbos? #985224apushatayidParticipantsometimes it isnt disinterest. it’s just that he has a greater interest. in this case, staying in bed. getting into bed at 2am is usually a good reason to want to stay in it at 7am.
apushatayidParticipantLeather is back in style? It was all the rage in the early 80s too.
apushatayidParticipantwhen their mother thinks it is time.
November 4, 2013 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm in reply to: What time an 18-year-old bachur should be home motzei Shabbos? #985221apushatayidParticipantAs long as it takes for him to get home from his last seder halimud.
apushatayidParticipant“his Chelek in Olam Haba is still 0”
Apparantly he tried to sell even that, but Ebay stopped the bidding (that reached 100k) because he was selling something “intangible”.
apushatayidParticipant“So like what konds of rules do the kollel wives have to follow?”
The hanhala insists that the wives attend sedarim regularly and arrive on time or they will be asked to find another beis medrah to learn in.
November 1, 2013 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm in reply to: Which Red Sox player could pass for a yungerman? #984663apushatayidParticipantI must admit, I am not the baki or mumcha in the coffee room to know the style, temperament or intention of all who write things here that you are. I will defer to your superior knowledge in these matters going forward.
November 1, 2013 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm in reply to: Which Red Sox player could pass for a yungerman? #984659apushatayidParticipantI cant help it if everyone insists on seeing the neagtive in everything others write. I guess I should keep that in mind going foward and anything I write will be with this understanding.
October 30, 2013 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm in reply to: Onslaught of Frum People That Are Closet Atheists #984397apushatayidParticipantwho is debating anything in this thread? a discussion has barely gotten off the ground, much less a debate.
October 30, 2013 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm in reply to: More leitzanus about ovrei aveirah. Mrs. Lopatin style. #984587apushatayidParticipant“Should Open Orthodoxy be expelled because it believes in learning Torah from all Jews…… and from the broader world?”
Learning torah from the broader world? What happened to Maggid Divarav LiYackov, Chukav Umishpatav Liyisroel, Lo Asa Kein Likul Goy, Umishpatim Bal Yidaum.
October 29, 2013 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm in reply to: Which Red Sox player could pass for a yungerman? #984652apushatayidParticipantand i believe mr crisis was trying to be funny, not nasty. both swung and missed, by a lot.
October 29, 2013 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm in reply to: Which Red Sox player could pass for a yungerman? #984650apushatayidParticipantI dont think crisisofhteweek is being any more foolish, or infantile than the one who started this thread.
October 29, 2013 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm in reply to: Onslaught of Frum People That Are Closet Atheists #984382apushatayidParticipantI dont know whose numbers are more accurate. I dont know if anyone is being an alarmist to generate a crowd at an event or if anyone has their head in the sand trying to ignore a problem.
My take on the matter is, if you feel you need chizuk in this area go to the lecture (or whatever it is) and when it is over call your Rav for a chazara (dont have a Rav, get one, asap).
October 22, 2013 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm in reply to: Guy who knows everything here; ask me anything #1215207apushatayidParticipantGuy who knows everything here;
“I am busy again so I don’t know if I can answer all the questions in the future.”
OK, thats ONE thing you dont know.
“let me know what happened in the game last night.”
And thats another.
You wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?
apushatayidParticipanthaitians do not qualify as hispanic (i used to work in recuritment at a large univeristy) unless the rule was changed and the definition broadened in the last 18 months. then again, if whoever makes the rules also defines hispanic to suit their needs then I suppose anyone they wish to consider hispanic would qualify.
apushatayidParticipantYes. It’s just you.
apushatayidParticipantI find it ridiculous that some find it ridiculous.
apushatayidParticipantI meant to write tarfus, I guess linguistics is not one of my strengths either.
apushatayidParticipantdoes an invalid shechita cause treifos? the answer to your question is obvious. what is not as obvious is the halachic application of kofin oso. Im not a rav or a thug, im not qualified to answer from either perspective.
apushatayidParticipantIf calls to hatzalah are what you consider breaking neighborhood news, you need to get a life. Quick.
apushatayidParticipantI’ll settle for not getting my feet stomped on every 5 minutes.
apushatayidParticipantaccording to that definition, haitians should classify themselves as hispanic. they share the island of hispaniola with the dominican republic. how many creole speaking hispanic people do you know?
apushatayidParticipantlistening to 911 calls?
apushatayidParticipantYou see nothing wrong with getting a kick out of someone elses misfortune?
apushatayidParticipantListening in on emergency frequencies is voyeurism at its worst. It is a horrible middah and should be eradicated at as young an age as possible.
apushatayidParticipant“For all you know they were Bukharans living below the poverty level.”
Not as twisted as stating that perhaps these hispanics were bukharans.
apushatayidParticipantLook into B’nos Deshe.
apushatayidParticipant“I also know a South African girl who filled in “African-American”.
Last I checked, South Africa was still on the African continent.
And why cant “sephardim” be hispanics? There are “sephardic” communities in El Salvador, Panama, Mexico among other Central American countries.
