    Makes sense, considering all the learning that goes on during davening.

    Am I supposed to feel insulted?

    Obviously to YOU this story is a BIG DEAL, so, exactly how is it a big deal? You saying tehillim for his neshama? Trying to get his sister to light shabbos candles? Reaching out to other lost neshamos?

    This is in the news not because some religious catholic found out that his parents were Jews, but because of who that person was in the catholic hierarchy. To which I still ask, why is this newsworthy, why does the press make such a big out of this given that the original Christians were all Jews.

    “Schools are not for parents.”

    True, but the parents are the ones paying the tuition. Therefore, the schools offer what the parents want not what the kids need. In short, my previous message still stands.

    midwesterner. I make it my business not to argue about the catholic religion, with catholics. if they wish to believe joseph and mary were his “parents” who am I to argue with them. as far as they are concerned a roman soldier wasnt his “father” either.

    “the drill” is covering over the real issue at hand. the lakewood board of ed is facing a budget shortfall. they cant raise the money because the state didnt grant a waiver on the 2% property tax increase cap, so they have to balance the budget by cutting services. one of those services proposed to be cut is “courtesy busing”. this is a budget issue. lakewooders who care should get involved in the workings of the board of ed, and start questioning its expenditures. perhaps there is money to be “found” in the budget by cutting wasteful spending. perhaps a compromise is in order, where the BOE and parents share the cost of transportation. it isnt a case where it is courtesy busing, or the busses are taken to another state. it is a question of who pays for it.

    I think schools are providing exactly what parents want. Everyone wants their son in the best yeshiva or beis yackov. that is measured by how many hours of seder or how intense the girls are driven. in the quest to be the best, everyone tries to outdo the next guy by adding another seder, another class in navi with rishonim and then like lemmings everyone tries to get into those yeshivos. when people start flocking to the few yeshivos and beis yackovs that place a strong emphasis on hashkafa, mussar and middos instead of looking for ways to further burn out talmidim and talmidos with additional “optional” sedarim, activities and research projects, all yeshivos and beis yackovs will emphasis those areas. like all providers, they are merely offering what people are asking for.

    Most partnerships are doomed to failure when one partner takes to griping in online forums about the perceived faults of the other partner(s). Partners who respectfully address all things they feel important with the other members of the partnership will find that the partnership will either grow, or due to significant differences will dissolve the partnership.

    What I meant was/is (and perhaps this is also how you interpret what I mean – I am uncertain what you mean, so am clarifying) that tefilla is ALWAYS appropriate, it is not a last resort as is implied by TRUEBT. In fact it should accompany every step of ones hishtadlus. The way I understand TRUEBT is that tefilla is merely the place one turns as a last resort, when all else fails.

    Not sure if this is addressed to me, but this is a very defensive reaction. Why should I (or anyone else) make fun of it?

    “Anyone who wanted to attend was there !”

    That might be true. It doesnt address the fact that there are many women who didnt know about it in the first place. Those women are interested in a summary of who said what.

    “was the name he was most commonly known as and called by during his lifetime.”

    By whom? The next time you hear or read something by his talmidim (Rabbi Genack for example) see how they refer to him? Most likely the title used is “The Rav”, never JB. That is an intentional derogatory usage by those who wished to malign him for whatever reason.

    lets cut to the chase, instead of bickering about how many women may or may not have been at the asifa, where can those women who did not attend (my wife never even heard of it and we live less than 10 minutes from where it was held!!) the asifa get a copy of transcrips of the speeches, or a copy of the video, or at the very least someones summary of what was said?

    this is why there is a shidduch crisis. every time you see a mazel tov posted, you see pictures of men at the simcha, you see men given a mazel tov, no women. if perhaps we involved women in the process girls would get engaged too 🙂

    A midrash and a maaseh. Also the version for younger children titled a mini midrash and a maaseh. Of course there is the (little) midrash says. Rabbi Frand on the Parsha 1,2 and 3. Just go into any seforim store. You’d spend $200 and not buy 1/4 of the available seforim you are looking for.

    I was not referring to bain gavra ligavra or waiting for the shatz. I was reffering to those who “daven” from their sefer.

    “that is what the frum stores sell.”

    Stores sell what is in demand. The store owner has his/her own nisayon about what to sell or not sell, but to put the onus of how people dress on the store owners, that is just plain silly.

    Men should stop flattering themselves. Women do not dress to impress men, they dress to impress other women.

    “I feel that one of the major issues are with the “jewish” clothing manufactures.”

    I think the biggest problem is the absentee men. The women who are walking around dressed in a way the OP and others like him/her constantly bemoan are not widows and orphans. More often than not they have husbands or fathers in their lives. It is up to them to say something as well.

    It all stems from a lack of yiras shamayim (clearly there is no need to have any yira from the social circle). A woman who has yiras shamayim wont dress contrary to halacha and a man with yiras shamayim wont tolerate it as a husband/father.

    =======================================================

    “These girls are taught to be tznius because they have to be, instead of wanting to be.”

    It is irrelevant what they WANT. what is relevant is the ratzon hashem. Someone with yiras shamayim wants to do the ratzon hashem.

    ===========================================================

    “do you think tznius improves with marriage, or did you just link two random issues?”

    I dont think the 2 “issues” are as random as you make it seem. With an over emphasis on a girls physical appearance, to the point where a girls photo on her shidduch profile is standard operating procedure, is there any wonder that girls continue to push the envelope in the appearance department (this includes clothes and makeup). the lack of yiras shamayim in our bachurim who are seem to have no issue with this runaway train moving forward at breakneck speed.

    ============================================================

    “Popa, is it better than ten years ago, or is it just better than fifty years ago?”

    It isnt better, or worse. It is different. Both are just as bad. Sure, we took steps forward, but we also took two steps back.

    im not saying they are equal, but from the perspective of “whats he doing in the middle of davening” there isnt much difference. in both cases the person is saying, id rather be doing something else instead of talking to hashem.

    to you it is perfectly normal that no frum person does that, you grew up with the concept of “pareve milk”, 50 years ago almost noone heard of such a thing and at best, it looked “funny”. I dont want to predict how quickly it will happen, but with the proliferation of smart phones and available apps, it will be as common as “pareve milk” and noone will think twice about it.
