“i hope you’re joking, all those boys that finish mishnayos for their bar mitzvah don’t become closer to Hashem?”

“And I think Rav Moshe was directing those comments towards the over-the-top bar mitzva celebrations, not the bar mitzva itself.”

I wonder if R’ Moshe was addressing those celebrations where there is more emphasis on the bar than the mitzvah.

“it is not a “global” problem,”

if 50% of the people believe this way it is global. I am certain it is probably closer to 80% (or more). I’m no pollster and I have not taken any polls, but I am certain I am correct.

The bag of farfel is the same no matter where you buy it. Just look for a store that offers the amenities that are important to you. Is it convenience (short commute, offer delivery, everything under one roof, easy parking), low prices, large selection, multiple departments (fruits, vegetables, take out etc) and shop there.

soliciting advise online can lead to serious halachic issues as you get more responses and they start putting down stores by name.

“I’m very doubtful that you would say to your child,….”

Attitudes run deep. I’m a realist, and I know how I feel. In this theoretical exercise I can very well imagine myself saying exactly what you doubt I would. Lets take black and white out of the equation and substitute other cultural differences, say a Bucharian boy and Chassidishe girl. Would you say parents have no right to be concerned and more importantly express that concern to their child, even in strong language? would you classify it as racist?

SYAG. Im a realist. People have turned down shidduchim for far less.

DY. I dont know what I would say if the situation came up. I know how I feel now, and assume I would say then, what I feel now.

what you are experiencing, probably is the norm. i dont have kids in shidduchim, but being brutally honest I know my gut reaction would be the same as “her parents” andI suspect most would have the same reaction. we dont live in a perfect world.

the way I heard the story is that the chofetz chaim himself had a hergesh to stay in bed one day for after all, he was an old man and could use his sleep and he replied to the yetzer hara, you are way older than me and up bright and early doing your job, so is no excuse for me. either way, nice story. nice lesson. doesnt change the 1st line in shulchan aruch or how to apply it to ones every day life.

the doctor and medicine are 100% real. that is how hashem created the world. a cheshbon hanefesh and teshuva and then going to the auto mechanic for a broken leg is stupid and against everything hashem wants from you. please do not believe me. speak to your own rav/rebbe/madrich or whatever it is you call it.

The kol koreh issued to the flatbush community (and published on ywn) was as a result of a shayla posed by three flatbush rabbonim to those poskim. they published the response they received. the three rabbonim in question often work together on communal matters.

there was no conspiracy or desire to get anyone on their behalf.

thats why we dont sit in the succah when it rains. as cheres we will fall apart. although I dont know why we would need a ptur of mitztaer when it rains if we have the more general ptur of sakanna, of dissolving in the rain. perhaps the seforim discuss this.

“What exactly is the problem with doing things Hashem didn’t asser?”

See the Ramban at the beginning of parshas kedoshim for starters.

Regarding Rav Moshes psak of kibui on yom tov. No, it is not a secret, nevertheless his own talmidim have told me (and in fact was part of the psak I was given) that it was in the category of halacha vain morin kein publicly to the masses precisely because he was concerned with zilzul. someone would say “litzorech the food” cavalierly and say “rav moshe permitted it” when in fact he did not.

Most importantly, it really doesnt matter what we do or do not think of this switch. It is what my posek says that matters to me and what your posek says, that matters to you.

Well, tzedaka taztil mimaves. The gemera says so.

Aser bishvil shetisasher. That is not a 21st century advertising slogan.

Arba shelach, kineged arba sheli. That is a rashi on a passuk in chumash. Not a madison avenue marketing campaign.

Tzedaka is the only time we are allowed to “test” hashem. This is a gemara.

do these maamarei chazal turn you off to the mitzva of tzedaka?
