To summarize. when you rely on a hechsher, you are relying on their standards AND their ability to enforce those standards.

unless you post a guard at your home 24×7, you cant stop anyone from leaving unwanted material at our door when you are not there. send the publisher a letter stating you do not wish to receive the publication and if he persists (its his business to work it out with his delivery company, not yours) file a complaint with 311.

I once heard the chabad shliach from a spanish city say, that the most non observant jew is literally choking on the catholicism that permeates the air, especially this time of year. They will grab at ANYTHING having to do with yiddishkeit to help them them from suffocating from it.

It may be an intimidation tactic, but, it is VERY effective when those tasked with enforcing regulations look the other way, or worse, ignore those who bring the issue to them. Right or wrong, in the big city, everyone tries to gain every inch, bu hook or by crook.

Academic levels aside, would you want your competitor evaluating whether you should remain in business, or not? The fact that it is the local school board that is tasked with evaluations, no matter what standards the state wants, creates an inherent conflict if interest. In many districts across the state the local public school is often competing for the same student (and by default the dollars they must alloxate) as private (often catholic) schools. Think local school board in ramapo, lawrence and ither district’s where There us friction. Imagine the conflict of interest, now that the local board can do away with the competition by simply declaring it not up to standard, and shutting it down.

The experience itself, is best addressed to someone inside Chabad, who is part of this program.

If you are asking general advice on how to pick up a better understanding of a)reading hebrew and b)understanding hebrew, perhaps those in the field of education can offer advice.

Regarding the importance of being able to read and understand “biblical hebrew” as you put it, is critical. For many years I volunteered for a group that billed itself as “anti missionary”, their favorite targets and where they have the most success are the ignorant. not just of judaism in general but even those who simply cant read hebrew. They would set up shop with jewish looking symbols and books, printed in hebrew and make claims about their beliefs and base them on pesukim in tanach. With no ability to refute them or even read the source material in the original, many were duped. my point is NOT that you or your son are targets for missionaries, rather, the inability to read and learn something in its original is a HUGE handicap. You are at the mercy of the translator. Like the saying goes, “something is lost in the translation”.

i’m wondering if this entire discussion is limited to very specific situations. at times hatzalah does not have available resources to transport someone (especially to the hospitasl of their choice) and they bring in one of the private for profit companies to pick up the slack (it happens daily). the for profit company is entitled to make money and if they dont bill the patient, they can bill hatzalah, or, they can write it off as a donation to hatzalah. if they dont, this is an additional expense incurred by hatzalah.

@Syag. I’m not in the habit of assuming what others mean, so, to make sure I understand you. You are either saying, if Hatzalah will bill insurance, giving calle$ $kin in the game, so to speak, then they would only call in a true emergency, something hatzalah would like to see happen and is using this as a subtle way to ensure that happens. In which case you are ok if they implement this change. Or, you are saying, it will have a negtive effect because even in a true emergency, people MAY not call. In which case you are against. Or, I completely misunderstand what you wrote. Please clarify?

“Once they start making money the motivation will change ”

I’m wondering why this is,seen as a for profit endeavor? Perhaps it a way to break even? Perhaps they don’t generate the donation$ we think they do.

I have NO idea either way. I assume Mr. Rowe has an understanding of Queens Hatzalahs operations and finances that none of us have and more importantly, reportedly was given a psak what to do.

I’m not following. In the case of a TRUE emergency, Chas vshalom, someone would refrain from calling for help because of a copay or deductible? I’m trying to picture situation where Chas vshalom, someone’s having a heart attack lo aleinu, and in response to “someone call hatzalah” the person gasps, “no, i didn’t meet my deductible”.

“How often does it occur that Hatzalah cannot get any member to respond to a call and instead calls a private ambulance company to take the call?”

Often, I have a family member who works for a private, for profit, ambulance company and he gets dispatched to calls handled by hatzalah daily.

Another question to ask is: How often is a responding member asked “can you drive me to my doctor” (often a trip from brooklyn into manhattan) in a non emergency situation (many times daily in fact) and member cant accommodate the request (nor should they quite frankly, they are emergency 1st responders, not medical transport company).

joseph, if you believe the article on YWN is wrong, the reporter is wrong, mr. rowe is wrong, or is misquoted, why didnt you say so from the moment it was cited?

we can also say, that if rav epstier is mr. rowes rav, and he believes it should not be done, then mr. rowe is following the advice of his rav. he isnt forcing the organization to follow his personal rav.

im sure joseph will tell me that he knows mr. rowe davens elsewhere, and has a diferent rav. in fact, he knows someone else who is really mr. rowe and the one quoted in the article is an imposter.

Sariray. Peanuts are also not usually fatal to the average healthy human, yet, as a society of civil people the overwhelming majority of people, those not affected in any way, make accommodations for those who are. in this case, those who do not choose to vaccinate and accomodate all the immuno compromised members of the population who are susceptible to these illnesses, are being asked to refrain from being in proximity to those people, at least for the duration of an outbreak of such a disease. what it boild down to is “I dont want to help protect those members of society by getting vaccinated – for whatever valid reason you believe you have – then at the very least respect their wishes by not endangering them by coming into close proximity to them”.

Lets assume this is a halachic and hashkaficly sound statement: What if I rewrote the sentences as follows:

Can you understand that we never entered an agreement that I, who do not have a child allergic to peanuts will stop sending peanut butter sanwiches with my child to school to help protect your child? What is your response?
