“Can someone please explain why pretty much every tzedaka organization is doing this?”

There are so many organizations “competing” for peoples money they always have to come up with something new. 25 years ago people were asking the same thing about chineese auctions (entice you with a watch or sofa to give tzedaka?). Then people started questioning the types of prizes offered at these auctions (tripes to E’Y, 100 grand cash). This is just the next evolution.

“whether or not you could be yotzai with whiskey.”

Just because you could, doesnt mean you should. Whiskey does not mean you can not or are not yotsai if you drink wine.

As for Rav Elya Svei Z’l, I dont think any of his talmidim are the bachurim who are the subject of these ads. The current Rosh Yeshiva of Philadelphia is pretty clear where he stands on the matter of drinking on Purim.

“Do you really think that these ads will accomplish anything? If they want to drink and possibly endanger themselves, they’ll find a way, unfortunately.”

That is probably true, but, there is no reason to enable it. Two years ago several rowdy bachurim were in my living room trying to take wine and were opening the breakfront looking for scotch. When I threatened to call their parents, they were out the front door like the proverbial bat, at least there is some deterrent.

“It is well known that there were gedolim who drank whiskey for the mitzvah.”

    Could you name 1?

Also, I read the article you cited. I guess you wish to be machmir in this inyan and drink scotch or bourbon because there is a small minority opinion that one can be yotze the mitzva that way.

(this is not addressed to anyone in particular). The word “Livsumei, technically doesnt mean “get drunk” why does the gemara use that word instead of the more common “Lihishtaker”.

“There are more ads for wines and wine stores.”

Advertising scotch and bourbon of which there is no mitzvah to drink on purim according to any opinion.

whatever you do, make sure you are both dressed for the activity. a nature walk in heels is probably not a good idea. a visit to an animal shelter in her finest shabbos clothing, also probably not a good idea. the rec center dressed like she is going to shul on shabbos, not a good idea. I dont know the rules these days, but when I was dating (almost 25 years ago) it was normal (actually, it was expected) for the young man to call the young lady prior to the date and make the arrangements for the date. I heard that isnt done nowadays, so I guess you will have to use a go between to discuss what to do and how to dress.

I guess I am. I was under the impression you were disagreeing with something I wrote. It seems you never disagreed. I maintained from my first comment that nobody should say anything because (forget dan lekaf zechus) all it is, is speculation which is pure rechilus.

Im going to hijack this thread since I dont kow how to start a new one. Sorry.

In another, now closed thread, someone wrote:

“What Dan lkaf zchus is there to a prosecutor? That he wasn’t intenyltionally malicious, perhaps.”

    Actually, yes.

“Doesn’t mean you have to believe that the allegations against the defendant is true.”

    Correct.

Which is why I wrote that the best thing to do in simply say nothing. If one of the sides asks you for your help, thats another story altogether. Consult your Rav for the halachic ramifications and a lawyer for the legal ones.

OK. Back to talking plea bargaining.

So you are saying a shomer shabbos prosecutor, fbi agent or police officer would also be entitled to the same Dan lekaf zechus.

I would take what Syag wrote one step further. Although it may not be applicable here (i assume Dan lekaf zechus doesn’t apply when it comes to a got but that assumption may be wrong) why would it not apply where the investigator or prosecutor is also a yid ( this is probably everyday occurence in israel) too. Isn’t the prosecutor or accuser entitled to the same treatment that he is not a rasha or worse and has legitimate basis for his accusation? In other words, one should keep their mouth shut and not say anything negative about either side.

ZD. My point was, you can’t always get what you think is “justice”. Sometimes you have to accept the reality that the other person is a jerk and there is nothing you can do as frustrating as that may be. HASHEM will deal with him. This is a tangential point to the main discussion here.

It may be pattur bidinei adam but it might be chayuv on dinei shamayim. If He deserves some form of punishment HASHEM knows how to deal with it.

Right now Dan lekaf zechus is a non issue. Nobody was accused of anything. Right now people are speculating, which is assur to say or believe under hilchos lashon hara.

    Or English.

If something is truly DE and someone eats it for dessert of a fleshig meal all is OK. If the formula changes and it is truly a dairy product and one erroneously thinks it is DE is in my opinion a bigger problem than something which is truly DE but has a D and is never eaten until waiting the appropriate time.

This is a response to someone who wrote the OU doesnt use Pareve. I dont know their guidelines, but I am staring at packets of splenda and sweet and low both of which are labeled OU pareve.

Neville. Regarding Non Dairy Creamers. You do not have a valid complaint. Non Dairy, Dairy Free are NOT a kashrus statement. They are industry allrgen statements that mean item does not contain lactose. there may be other milk derived ingredients that do not contain lactose and satisfy the allergen statement and disclosere but do not satisfy dairy free as far as kashrus is concered. The only kashrus statement being made by any hechsher is their name or symbol on the packaging. Is it the fault of the OU or any other organization that consumers are not familiar with allergen statements?

I still don’t see it in shul and I still don’t get invited to those kiddushim. I guess my social life and social standing hasn’t changed much. I do have sons who are 7 years older and Thursday nights and Friday night “oneg shabbos” with the guys frightens me. It isn’t out in the open the way It was described here rather, away from parents, rabbeim and other adult supervision.

I’m reviving this topic. Not the tznius aspect but rather the drinking aspect. If anyone thinks the drinking at kiddushim has stopped or at least slowed, they only need to look at the new “how a lchaim can become a limaves” campaign started recently by Hatzala, Misaskim, Shomrim and other Brooklyn community organizations. It isn’t a Shabbos morning kiddish problem any more. It is now a Friday night oneg and even post mishmor Thursday night to wash down the chulent problem too.
