“Is TAG (Technology Awareness Group) a not-for-profit business”

No, TAG is not a business at all. It is a group of volunteers who assist those who have smart phones install and set up filters suited to their needs. Sometimes the solution most suited to someones needs is a product sold by a for profit company which TAG is asking you to pay for since it is being installed on your device to protect you. Who should pay for it, the volunteer who will help you install and configure it?

“Should it be the same price as non-kosher absolutly.”

Who should shoulder the additional costs, the business (sometimes they do, sometimes they dont)? You want kosher meat, buy a cow, learn the relevant halachos and do it yourself. If you want the convenience of purchasing a ready to cook piece of meat that is certified by a reliable person (agency), guess what, there are those who are willing to provide such a service, provided they make a profit which includes the cost of paying the Rav Hamachshir. As to multiple hashgachos on the same store/product, it is because the store/company feels it will appeal to the widest range of customers and the investment is worth it. As an aside, do you really believe that on a bottle of wine with 6 certifications, there are 6 different people representing the 6 hechsherim at the plant? The same person almost certainly works for all of them, this is especially true the further you go from an established Jewish community.

You pay for the Rav Hamachshir (whether the cost is itemized or not) on the restaurant or the packaged food, you dont ask why.

    “why can’t they find sponsors?”

You sponsoring? What about his parents? Why should I care about his ruchniyus any more than his own father? Let him pay for it if he made the decision to allow his son to have a smartphone to begin with.

“Now he was willing to get it filtered, but the $ threw him off”

Money didnt seem to be an issue when it came to buying the smartphone or the recurring monthly fees.

Memorial is the unofficial 1st day of summer. It is a weekend of sales at the mall and bbqs at the beach and of course hot dog eating contests not to mention a long weekend off from work. How hard do you have to work to get someone to commemorate such a weekend?

1: Does TAG charge for their services? I walked into a TAG office in Flatbush a little more than a year ago and had filters installed on 4 smartphones, for no charge.

2: Assuming something changed in the last year, are YOU, Mrs. L. volunteering YOUR time so that they do not have to charge?

3: I am purposely avoiding taking the discussion down the road of “why does this bachur need a smart phone” because it will take away from the real conversation here, you want something for nothing.

“What’s so complicated? No one said more girls than boys are born every year. More CHILDREN OF BOTH GENDERS are born every subsequent year than the previous year because our population is growing B”H.

It’s YEAR x that doesn’t match up to YEAR y in terms of the number of available singles. Whichever gender belongs to the younger year will bederech hateva have more unmatched members.”

Since statistics show (freely available on the CDC website) that year after year on average 3 percent more boys than girls are born, even with larger “class size” every year, there are still on average 3% more boys than girls at every age, so naturally 3% boys at age X will have to marry someone of a different age. Are you saying that population growth far exceeds 3% on average year over year every year to the point that NASI is able to publish a statistic that 10% of girls at every age level wont have a shidduch?

Apparently the advice to an overwhelming majority of bachurim is not to marry at an earlier age, because it is not happening in large numbers. Either that, or we have a separate problem, large percentages of bachurim and their parents ignoring the advice of those Rabbeim.

If this years graduating high school class has more girls than boys, that means 13-14 years ago in kindergarten there were more girls than boys, and for those who are dating 5-10 years already to means that in their kindergarten class in 1988 there were 10 more girls than boys. Has this been a trend for the last almost 30 years that the non chassidish yeshivish community in the us has had such a disparity in births between males and females? Is it possible the numbers are closer to 50/50 and we have a different problem altogether, too many boys have “problems”, as PBA so eloquently put it, that they dont make it to their graduating class (or, they graduate from a place that they are not considered for shidduch island as NASI likes to call it)?

for those in shidduchim today we need to be looking at class size 20 years ago, and for those still single after dating 5-10 years we need to be looking at class size in 1990 or earlier. are we?

whatever numbers are brought to the table the year(s) for that data must also be brought to the table.

    >>The place to sound off though is not here.<< Why not?<<

Because the photos in question are over there. The owners/editors of the sites that post and host these photos are the ones who can effect a change, not the owners of this site. By reading and commenting on this site, you help the owners of this site generate ad revenue with increased eyeballs. People are typically motivated by fear, or money and they are especially motivated by the fear of losing money. If you let the owners of those sites know that they will lose readership (and ad dollars) because they post and host material that is not appropriate they will respond, unless they specifically have an agenda they are looking to push and could care less about ad revenue (would you want to be part of such a site?).

The number of young women who have dated 5-10 years and are still single is far far greater than the number of young men who have dated 5-10 years and are still single.

    ================================================================

Lets assume this is true. Has anyone ever looked into why they are dating for 5-10 years and still single? Perhaps they are edit, stupid or looking for something in a spouse that doesnt exist in the modern world. Why assume that it is because there is a shortage of males?

More anecdotal evidence. All those signatories to all those NASI ads. How many of their talmidim/mispallelim are a)dating younger b)marrying girls closer in age c) how many of their own sons or daughters are getting married following those suggestions (guidelines)? d)what percentage of weddings attended by CR members in the last 6 months followed these suggestions (guidelines)?

My neighbor “specializes” in redting shidduchim for “older singles”. One interesting tidbit. The older the girls get, the less they change what they are looking for (someone learning full time in yeshiva), while the older the guys get, they are slowly moving away from learning 3 sedarim a day in yeshiva (or 3 sedarim a day 6 days a week). So, he has lots of 22 and 23 year old females who wont go out with a bunch of available 25 year olds because what the guys are, are not what the girls want. I dont have any more proof than anyone elses theory (apparantly thats not needed in these discussions), but I would say there is an adequate number of males for the number of available females, the problem is the available males are not what the available females are looking for. So, the available guys get set up with the younger girls who are looking for those guys.

DY. No, I believe it has zero to do with the numbers born. Unless I am misunderstanding you, you are the one who keep harping on it. The “replacement rate” as I now understand you does not drastically change year over year. In fact, if the CDC statistics are correct, that would be a built in correction for the “age gap” which is being billed as the primary cause. Dont take my word for it. All you need to do is register on the CDC website and you can access all the data. Year after year, for more than 25 years more males than females are being born in the US. sometimes the number is 50.5:49:5 and sometimes it is as high as 54:46, but year after year, more males than females were born in the US. If the “statistics” in the jewish publications are factual, why is it that the births in the Orthodox Jewish community are so statistically different (the papers claim 5% more girls every year) that the general population (about 3% more males than females), year after year for so many years?

“by far, than the replacement rate”

Replacement rate? what do the elderly have to do with shidduchim?

“Do you dispute either of these two facts?”

Are these facts? According to the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) the percentage of all children born in the US over the last 15 years is at least 51% male every year, for the last 15 years (more males have been born in the US every year for the last 15 years according to the CDC, they find it so surprising that they have commissioned studies to determine why this is so, the law of averages says it should be 50/50). If the Orthodox Jewish population deviates so much from the overall population (which is does based on your undisputed facts), why is that so?

My take: I have no plans on coming into close contact with one of these kids or one of their immediate family members, so, I dont care. Let the not vaccinate, let them get chicken pox and deal with the potential fallout. They are , I have to assume, responsible adults, making informed decisions, they have to live with the consequences of there decisions. If I had kids in Williamsburg yeshivos, or if I myself had what to do with them, I might think differently. Arvus only goes so far. Making medical decisions for other people is not part of it.
