“Google it. The web site is erub dot org. The map is there. The rabbinical endorsements are there. Everything is there.”

With one exception, who takes responsibility for the weekly checking? Is it the Sephardic Rabbinic Council?

when someone comes to a public forum and “shares”, they make it everyones business. you dont want random anonymous strangers commenting on your life, dont bare it all in front of them.

Interesting. I have never heard a single talmid of the Rav ever, refer to their Rebbe as JB, Rav JB, or Joseph. Not Rabbk Genack, Not Rav Doniel Lander, not Rav Heshy Reichman not Rabbi Willig, none. It is also true I have not heard every one of his thousands of talmidim speak so I can not say definitively none do. I can definitively say, I have never heard it.

You didnt put him in any situation. He could avoid taking the bus altogether, or, he could refrain from rushing and wait on the side until everyone else got on, or, he could keep tabs on his surrounding and wait for the next bus. he knew the risks of meeting up with improperly dressed women when he left the house in the morning, stop blaming yourself for an uncomfortable situation a man found himself in.

It is my understanding no Beis Din would “order” you to give a get unless there was some form of counseling to try and save the marriage.

    “we’re doing quite well”

That may be true, but your wife might be looking for something more than an ATM machine as a spouse and she is using these charges against you as a means of “getting out” since she feels you are a hopeless case in the emotional needs department. Perhaps you are not physically abusing her, but you are emotionally. That is what counseling will help figure out.

Every person, every shul and every community has its things to work on and improve. I am familiar with a shul that identifies as MO where talking in shul is a non issue, but how the members dress (male and female) is. We are all familiar with many minyanim where dress is a non issue and talking in shul is a major issue or alcoholism is. This is not about what is a bigger problem or what is worse but what is an identifiable problem that needs to be addressed by each person, shul and community. The RCA directive is no more addressed to Joseph and his ilk than a takana from the Skverer Rebbe to the members of the RCA.

Jammers are not “no talking in shul signs”, the equivilant is “dont use your phone in shul” sign. Jammers are the equivilant of saying, we want you to do this. If you dont, we wont let you anyway. We dont care that you are bored in shul because you have no idea what yu are saying, what is going on, who you are talking to or why, we will use jammers to make sure you cant use your phone. Aleviate your boredom some other way, of course not by talking, perhaps by pulling out a sefer and learning during davening.

I’m against cell phone jammers because they dont teach anything. Teach biur tefilla. Teach what it means to have proper kavod for hashem and his house. Jammers just mean someone moves on to a shul that doesnt have them and continues the same abhorrent practice of using their phone for improper things while in shul.

What the press shows me and you and what will becahown at trial, I’m sure, are vastly different. There is a rule of law in this country. Thuggery has no placecib a civil society. Even the uber liberal white reporter for cnn who was deliberately knocked over by an african American rioter (press calls them protesters) in NC made that point (it took being knocked over by a thug for him to see they are thugs not protesters.)

“The racial narrative has taken hold with the media so that incidents with African-American victims are reported nationally while incidents with white victims are only reported locally.”

Incidents of white against black (cop or civilian) shootings are reported nationally. Incidents of black against white, or the majority of incidents, black against black are reported locally, if at all. The narrative is NEVER an african american killed an african american (in chicago for example it is simply, 4 more shot dead, not 4 more african americans killed by african americans – you can be sure if the murderers were white how it would report), but if a white killed an african american (think george zimmerman/trayvon martin) it is national news.

Picketing is not walking into a business and threatening the owner. The implications of the OP and subsequent comments is that thugs walked into an establishment and threatened the owner (not physically). Even picketers are subject to certain rules, it isnt a free for all, and they are certainly not allowed into the establishment they are picketing. Now, if the OP used language that was not precise, and people picked up on the error and ran with it, and this entire thread is based on a complete misunderstanding, and really several residents walked into the establishment and had a cordial conversation with the owner about the nature of the business and the nature of the population it catered to, and that he is miscalculating the customer base and to reconsider the TV and the owner did just that (whew!), then, this thread is just a waste of time. Perhaps the OP can enlighten us what he or she really meant.

You can eat out 10 times a week and take 30 vacations a year, if you can afford it (of course this includes discussing with ones Rav their tzadaka obligations and they meet those as well, all part of “afford it”). “Live comfortably means different things to different people. Nobody can answer that except you. Sit down with pen and paper, list all those things you believe are included in “comfortably” then we can discuss what your salary needs to be.

I’m familiar with a number of orthodox shuls where women say kaddish. Some barely above a whisper and some loud enough to be heard across the shul. I’m not a posek to say it’s right or wrong. Those shuls though have recognized rabbonim and if they allow it in their shul I’m not about to burn with “righteous indignation”.

If you wish to learn halachos by asking questions, this is not the proper forum. You never know who you are asking, who is answering and what their qualifications are for answering. do you have an objective way to determine if the answer you receive is correct? If you wish to learn by asking, find a Rav, or Rebbetzin and ask them. Better yet, in conjunction with the Rav buy a kitzur shulchan aruch (many available with english translation) and start learning the halachos. when done, move on to mishna berurah, then to aruch hashulchan. remember to always have your Rav on speed dial when a question comes up, it is no shame in clarifying a halacha with your own Rav. when you become proficient in all of or hachaim, you can move on to yoreh deah, then choshem mishpat then even haezer. who knows in 10 years you may be the official coffee room posek, but still keep your Rav on speed dial, every Rav has a Rebbe who he turns to.

the back room deals at chase have nothing to do with negotiating skills and everything to do with being part of a club. it is about who you know, not what you know or how you perform. if you think walking into the back room at chase whining how it isnt fair your collegue makes more than you is going to get you a raise, go for it. Companies will pay whatever they have to to hire and retain good employees. Salaries operate along supply and demand principles. In some economies and industries it is a buyer’s market and salaries are lower. In other economies and industries the reverse is true.

    Joseph,

What you COULD do andcwgat you SHOULD do are 2 different things. If you believe approaching your boss and negotiating a raise based on the salary of a coworker is a good idea then go for it. I would advise putting your negotiating skills to to work with an argument based on your accomplishments and value to the boss. Thats also the basis for nehotiating a salary for a new job. Not the salary of a coworker.

    Joseph,

Having interviewed and hired people I can assure you that nothing is further than the truth. If you work in a small mom and pop company that simply cant get along without you, you will likely get your raise in the short term. Before the 1st paycheck with the higher salary arrives, I assure you, your replacement is being recruited. In a larger corporation, you can forget your negotiating skills unless you are a top sale rep, top grossing lawyer or accountant who has financial leverage over the company because you can take your book of business elsewhere, you are not scaring anyone. At best you wont get your raise, at worst you will tick off enough people that they will find some pretext to get rid of you and worse the one who shared information they should not have, with you. Im sure you will scream “there are laws” about unlawful firing, well guess what, employment in the USA is what is called “at will”, the same way you can you can give 2 weeks whenever you want to, so can your employer. Dont give them a reason to do so.

Please name a single company that has paid anyone more than their manager because they had better negotiating skills. It is more likely that they know the subordinate is more valuable to the company in the long run, and will almost certainly become the supervisor and prefer to “invest” in that employee.

in reply to: Discussing Salary With Colleagues #1178744

1: You are NOT helping them get anything. Private sectors jobs are not union jobs where everyone starts at the same level, gets the same raise and has the same benefits. If an employee feels they deserve a raise, they should present an argument based on their own merits, not because thats what someone else is making. There could be any number of valid reasons why one person makes more than another including when they were hired (were they replacing someone who was making even more? Were they hired at a time when the company was able to afford to give higher salaries? did they come into the company with more experience? in a smaller company, was the other person hired at that salary as a favor to their uncle joe? these are just a few reasons why 2 employees who perform the same function might have different salaries)

2: You are creating resentment directed towards you from your manager/boss. For starters, you show that you cant exercise proper judgement by sharing what the company considers private information. How will they feel about sharing other company info with you?

in reply to: Ladies First – Is it respectful or not? #1178596

The question that opened this thread was not, opening doors for women, is it a torah or western ideal. The question was, is it respectful or not to women. IF it is not a torah ideal, does it make it forbidden and if it is not forbidden , (and here is the crux of the question) do you believe it is respectful to women? not every western practice is forbidden simply because it is a western ideal. I would posit, “women and children first” is more a violation of the torahs ideal of “chayecha kodem” then holding open a door for a female in a specific context.
