“However, if I was living in Israel, I would have to decide between two very different options:
1) report to the draft office, receive a deferment, and go back to learning; or
2) go protest in the streets.”Just curious. Why isnt there a 3rd option. Listen to “your” Rosh Yeshiva and dont register, get arrested if/when the army shows up. So far, to my (admittedly not the best informed) knowledge Nobody has said to go out into the streets, block traffic, burn garbage and engage in physical violence against the police and others. Civil disobedience is certainly common, but, at a certain point, the government must intervene when it creates hardship for many people.
apushatayidParticipantNew York – Otisville
apushatayidParticipantI wonder what percentage of those out protesting since Rosh chodesh are chutzniks with nothing better to do. An exciting day at the hafgana is way better than helping wherever you may be for the chag prepare.

apushatayidParticipant“Most women I know just like dressing nicely for themselves,”
My sister told this to me 30 years ago and it is probably even more true today. Women dont care how or if men look at them and their dress, all they care is what other women think.
apushatayidParticipant“why are you wearing it outside the home to look good for street people,”
I dont make assumptions on behalf of other people. I will say this. I personally wont wear slippers in the street, no matter how comfortable they may be. not everything is about tznius.

Does their action conform to Hashems will?
apushatayidParticipantit doesnt shmek of leitzanos. it IS leitzanos. or is that letzanos?
apushatayidParticipantperhaps thats koreich?
apushatayidParticipantdude (dudette?) chill, we are not discussing parshas zachor, we are discussing korech (are you still hung over from purim?)

I couldnt let this pass. No, he shouldnt have because it is a criminal act. He shouldnt be kicking anyone, male or female.

He didnt kick anyone, turn over a dumpster, light garbage on fire, throw rocks or call policemen nazis.
apushatayidParticipantlo rainu, aino raya. go into any shoprite, stop and shop etc… you will see gluten free panko of several varieties and brands. for those who have or live with someone who has celiac (and there are many) it is reality.
March 30, 2017 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm in reply to: Should Scotland secede from the United Kingdom? #1247413apushatayidParticipantAs long as they continue to allow exports of scotch to the us, I dont care if they merge with greenland.
apushatayidParticipanta related question. does anyone eat a kizayis of korech for zaicher limikdash kihillel and another for zecher limikdask kihillel?
apushatayidParticipantNo more manicotti? 🙁
Isnt the word “shechina” lashon nekeiva?
apushatayidParticipantTapioca or potato starch dont have the same consistency as wheat flour. gluten free products typically use xantham gum as a binder.
are you “missing the boat” by using kosher lepesach “bread crumbs” instead of bread crumbs? from a taste perspective in my opinion, no, from a texture perspective, possibly, it depends on the recipe and the cook.
apushatayidParticipantKosher L’pesach panko crumbs are available all year from several companies that make gluten free products. They use potato or tapioca starch. some use rice flour which would be a kitniyos problem. these products are not as uncommon as you think.
apushatayidParticipantWherever it fits.
apushatayidParticipant“He is not so interested in learning (yet),”
Then why send him to E’Y? Why do you think he will suddenly be interested once he gets there, especially if he has all the distractions of home? what you should really be asking (IF interest in learning is the goal), what Yeshiva, wherever it may be, can help develop that interest.
apushatayidParticipantGr8bachur. Stay in Flatbush and go to Birchas Shmuel (Rabbi Wallerstein).
apushatayidParticipantHow well did the “this is your brain on drug” campaign work? Scare tactics dont work.
apushatayidParticipantSurely there is a reason(s) you are looking to switch out of your high school after 11th grade (as you wrote I am going into 12th grade). Perhaps if we understood the reason for switching high schools for the 12th grade, it would help advise where to go.
Have you spoken to any Rabbeim at your current high school? Have they suggested anything?
apushatayidParticipantWhy do you think the Yeshivos you named will be interested in you?

March 27, 2017 10:13 am at 10:13 am in reply to: Best Android Filter or App Lock with No Monthly Recurring Fees #1244541apushatayidParticipant“The cost is annual.”
OK, so its annual.
apushatayidParticipant“Tznius and kosher are both halachas from Hashem that we are equally obligated to follow our Torah obligations on.”
And this is the message that needs to be taught. A healthy level of yiras shamayim, in my opinion, is how someone will achieve this. Browbeating someone to follow a halacha because lack of observance is a nichshol to others, is a stupid tactic, in my opinion. Then again, my opinion only matters when it comes to my wife and daughter. Someone elses wife and daughter if for him to determine the best course of action.
apushatayidParticipant“Cant we go back to arguing if Joseph can place Scarlet Letters on Tzniut offenderes”
It is clear from his many posts that joseph places scarlet letters on anyone who disagrees with him. I believe I have 8 more letters and I will have been “placed” with an entire scarlet alphabet.
apushatayidParticipant“Both are machsil es harabim.”
A red herring. Nobody debates this point. What is being discussed is if browbeating someone to obeserve a halacha because they are a michsol to others is the proper way to teach someone about anything. Obviously, you believe the answer is yes.
apushatayidParticipantReminds me of The story with the bobover rebbe z’l (r shlomo) and “vus meint, usimager”. Look it up.
apushatayidParticipantKashrus organizations are very much against retail establishments using their symbol in a back handed manner, implying that the agency certifies the establishment. Less than 2 months ago I called the OU about an ice cream shop that advertised in its window “our ice cream is ou certified” to confirm exactly what they certified and was told they have nothing to do with the store, which just might happen to sell ice cream with their certification. Recently that stores signage now indicates that while it is true they may sell ou certified ice cream, the OU is in no way connected to the store and does not certify it in any way. It is true kashrus symbols are are often seen as marketing symbols by sellers, but the kashrus agencies do not.
apushatayidParticipantJoseph,
I am aware of the shulchan aruch. I am talking about the people whose behavior you are trying to correct. They are also aware of the shulchan aruch and its halachos. Your question was about increasing the level of tzniyus.
“If someone doesn’t keep kosher I’d expect them to not keep tznius.”
Is the reverse also true (someone who DOES keep kosher also follows the halachos of tznius)? In fact, you yourself have posted numerous times, as have others, it is often those who adhere to the highest levels of kashrus when it comes to their food, are the ones who need the greatest amount of chizuk when it comes to their manner of dress. So, while it is true halacha is clear where it stands as far as the food one should eat and the manner a person should dress, you (meaning me, you and the community Rav) can not legislate that people follow the shulchan aruch, nor increase their level of yiras shamayim.
This is, as stated above, for the most part not an awareness issue, but a yiras shamayim issue with chizuk needed by many to overcome this particular yetzer hara.
apushatayidParticipantits a topic that is very close to home and it needs to be addressed, at home.
you cant legislate or intimidate yiras shamayim.
apushatayidParticipantAs wide a gap as both sides are comfortable with. It is their comfort level that matters, not yours.
apushatayidParticipant“and that they are being cruel to men when they dress untzniusly.”
That might be true, but it is a poor excuse to browbeat someone to dress according to the standards demanded by halacha. The standards demanded by halacha dont apply exclusively to when there are men around.
apushatayidParticipantIt was late at night? All the more reason not to leave someones keys hanging in the lock.
apushatayidParticipantI would have taken the keys out of the door and hung up a sign in the lobby, found set of keys, please call….. that would give plenty of time to arrange with a married couple in the building to be the pick up spot.
apushatayidParticipant“and how to enforce the proper decorum amongst the noshim.”
each husband/father should address this with his wife/daughter. if he cant, he should go to his Rav for direction.
all consumers, especially those who control the payment to the stores, should take a stand against those stores “frum stores” that sell inappropriate clothing to frum women. money speaks very loudly.
after that, you cant enforce yiras shamayim.
apushatayidParticipant“I vote for Joseph to yell Zonah at everyone who dresses in a way he deems untzniut”
He does, online, behind the relative safety of anonymity.
March 22, 2017 9:27 am at 9:27 am in reply to: Best Android Filter or App Lock with No Monthly Recurring Fees #1241548apushatayidParticipantNetspark. a 1 time fee of $55 (I believe). TAG installed it for me and locked all apps except those I specifically asked to keep open. My personal feeling. You get what you pay for. If filtered phone is important, then get something that meets the need.
apushatayidParticipantJus by Julie claims to be an OU certified product. Problem is, those are prepackaged drinks, not freshly made sandwiches.
The OU is a pretty savvy social media company. Jus by Julie’s website spells out where their truck is as does their twitter feed and facebook page. Tell the OU to check out their website and social media profiles to get the location of the truck.
apushatayidParticipantAristotle offered advice on shidduchim (or do I have no idea what Tachlis magazine is)?
apushatayidParticipantits a bit tricky. make sure you sleep at least 60 neshimos or you are not yotze and will have to start again, but then, if you do you will have to wash negel vasser again and it might be a shayla of baal tosif since in the seder we only have urchatz and netilas yadayim before motzi. certainly there are hetterim, but for this reason some are makpid to drink only non mevushal red wine. also, on years when shabbos is 1st day of pesach and kidduch friday night is a doraisa some hold you shouldnt sleep for the kossos because it wont be recognozable if the sleeping is for the arba kossos or for shina bshabbos taanug. also, some hold that when 1st night is motsai shabbos, due to sakanna – kiddush, which includes havdala should be made davka with wine, but the other kossos one may be yotze via sleeping.
apushatayidParticipantAnd yet, when my Uncle in queens has a shayla, he calls his Rav; not the vaad. The vaad is not the manhig on my queens.
apushatayidParticipantI got there is the late 70s when it was already Dora golding. Rabbi himber was still there (had had a really cool motorcycle) as was rabbi axelrud. That’s when camp was camp. The big trip of the summer was the trip to camp. Our big trips off camp grounds was a home to local waterfall in the backyard of a home owned by 2 women and to the local gas station for soda and chips.
apushatayidParticipantAnd the local Costco bakery is under the chaf k, does this make them the gadol hador of the neighborhood or all Costco shoppers. What does kashrus certification have to do with being a manhig? Heck, every cab driver is a manhig.
apushatayidParticipantevery day is pie day for me. im partial to blueberry pie, but im always open to a good apple pie too.
March 15, 2017 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm in reply to: Very Important Public Service Announcement for all posters #1228788apushatayidParticipantOne must be very naive and quite foolish to take to heart anything another person posts here be it advice, an admonition or a tongue lashing. Someone who claims to be a 37 year old married male, might just be a 14 year old female. A 30something female baal teshuva who posts a question, might just be a bored 17 year old kid with too much free time on his hands. This is my attitude when reading or writing anything on this, or any similar, forum. Please keep that in mind when reading anything I write.
apushatayidParticipanthow about the tune to “bas kol” and “im worth it”, sound very “similar”.
apushatayidParticipant“No other mesorah?”
This one is quite adequate.
If the family kept changing mesorah, what type of mesorah would that be?
