“Kosher food costs more than its non-kosher equivalent food”
What you likely mean is, smaller jewish (heimish) brands cost more than larger national brands, but, since I am not in the business of assuming what other people mean, can you clarify?

What do you think?
November 2, 2017 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm in reply to: Why does Cholov Yisroel milk cost so much? #1394835apushatayidParticipant“All of this is not true for milk.”
Does the CY come from a “part time” CY farm or a full time one. A “part time” CY farm is one that is “rented” for a special CY run. A team of mashgichim have to 1st kasher all equipment that comes in hot contact with the non cy milk and all storage vats that store milk for 24+ hours at a time. Once done, one or more of the team remains on site at the farm during the entire CY production run which may be several days or several weeks. There may be several such productions a year to ensure a continuous supply of fresh CY milk. this costs money. the mashgichim dont come from a gmach. A full time CY farm doesnt have the kashering component, but, it should be pointed out that most farms are not situated near a heimishe neighborhood, and you have to make it worthwhile for someone to live in such a place all year long. Those who live in these far flung places are not doing it out of the goodness of their heart and are not a gemach and they have to be compensated for it.
November 2, 2017 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm in reply to: Why does Cholov Yisroel milk cost so much? #1394827apushatayidParticipantIs the price of CY milk so high? There may be some stores that charge more than others, but this is true of non CY milk too.

yes you can. I do. I give the atheist bus driver his monetary gift, and the buddhist mailman his bottle of scotch. In their mind, and in my mind, it has nothing to do with the guy supposedly born in a manger with a mezuman of wise men.
November 2, 2017 11:58 am at 11:58 am in reply to: Is A Jew Permitted To Celebrate Halloween? #1394431apushatayidParticipantThe relevance is, those who observe the american “holiday” halloween are not observing the pagan holiday or its version borrowed by the rc church. they are using its name.

What is so revolting about giving candy to little kids dressed like superman and Barbie? The average American probably thinks a pagan is a character in the newest game downloadable from the app store.
November 2, 2017 7:39 am at 7:39 am in reply to: Telemarketers Should ASSUR Due to Something #1394169apushatayidParticipantThere is no mitzva to answer the phone. Telemarketer is banking on your curiosity. Worse, when you answer, your number is tagged in their database as a number with a human that answers and you will be called again. Best thing to do is pick up phone but do not say a word, they use voice recognition software to flag live respondent, this is why there is a delay After you pick up and human gets on line. After a few times of “dead air”, your number is flagged as one not to call back for a while.

When I give out candy, it is to avoid “tricks” being sent my way. Kind of like the money people pay the mafia for the zechus of keeping their store in the neighborhood (and in one piece).

October 27, 2017 12:27 pm at 12:27 pm in reply to: The EXPLODING Opioid Crisis In The Frum Community #1390927apushatayidParticipantTLIK. I interpreted nothing. I commented, that is someone will cite anecdotes and statistics, they should cite those that make the point. Reading comprehension is apparently, reading comprehension skills are not part of the little you know.
apushatayidParticipantNo Global history prior to 1750? 95% of global history happened before that time. In 50 years kids will grow up that the spanish originated in texas, the dominicans in washington heights and skvere chassidus was founded in new square.
October 26, 2017 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm in reply to: The EXPLODING Opioid Crisis In The Frum Community #1390446apushatayidParticipant“over 25 frum kids from brooklyn, Monsey, Lakewood, Long Island, LA and other frum areas.”
I’m not saying it is, or isnt a problem, but, this statement proves nothing except, over 25 frum kids from brooklyn, Monsey, Lakewood, Long Island, LA and other frum areas (under the age of 18 – I infer this from the comment about Utah) are being treated for addiction. Do you have any idea how many frum kids (under the age of 18) there are in the frum areas you mentioned,. Lets say there are 25,000, 25 kids out of 25,000 is .001. If 1/10 of 1 percent of kids are being treated for addiction, is that an exploding crisis? Certainly to their families it is, but, to the community at large? If one wishes to cite statistics or anecdotes, at least cite something that makes sense.
apushatayidParticipantThey are all excuses. a grown person should be able to keep his mouth shut for the three minutes it takes to make a mi-shebeirach in between aliyos.
apushatayidParticipant“If people know that they are coming to shul and are going to be there for at least two and a half hours, of course they are going to talk!! ”
Of course? If one had to sit through a dinner at the white house and 2 hours of boring speeches, would he talk to the guy sitting next to him? Why should hashems house be any different. Perhaps this person should move to a minyan that davens faster, so that he wont be bored in shul. Perhaps the person is bored because they have zero appreciation of what it means to be in shul in the presence of hashem. Perhaps this person sees tefilla as nothing short of a chore, chalila, and thats why he is bored. There are many, many people who attend such shuls and are not bored, and in fact enthusiatically sing along with the chazzan, or listen attentively to every word of chazaras hashatz and krias hatora because they appreciate what it means to be in shul.

I have not, and do not intend to. A comment, is not an argument, for or against.
“There are actually no legitimate halachic reasons not to wear this techailes.
My Rav disagrees with you.
“Unfortunately, most people who comment on this, including rabbonim, have not studied it and simply make an assumption ,”
If this is your belief, so be it.
“And please don’t argue about whether or not there was a huge event in Boro Park, because there was, and you argue without knowing, as you do about the very subject itself.”
Again, I have not. I have asked repeatedly what went on at this event, and so far you have come oh so tantilizingly close to answering this question, but dont.
“I would suggest you stay out of the argument because you don’t now the subject.
That is a very valid suggestion. In fact, one I have followed since the outset. I have not taken a position one way or another. I HAVE stated my personal practice, which I have not suggested that anyone here adopt.
“If your reason not to wear techailes is truly because you are following your rav, than why do you need to argue?”
You must be confusing me with someone else. Again, I have not taken a position, only stated my personal practice.
October 18, 2017 10:10 am at 10:10 am in reply to: No mention of the huge techailes event in Boro Park on Chol Hamoed?! #1385006apushatayidParticipant“It is clear, however, to those who have properly researched the subject, that whoever doesn’t accept this
techailes , is simply mistaken and is not aware of the seriousness.”Thats fine. It is equally as clear to me (based on my own Rav) that there are legitimate halachic reasons NOT to wear what is claimed to be techeiles. I dont know what they are, and since I am not in the business of second guessing my Rav, his psak, is a psak, not a recommendation. I suspect, many (though certainly not all) other people feel the same way.

So far, that would only be you. For such a “huge” event, I would have expected that someone in my social circle (which includes 3 who wear techeles daily) would have at least heard of the event, possibly even attended.
apushatayidParticipant“is it fair”
If it applied equally to all, it is fair. Rather, you should ask; is it appropriate.

Seriously? A mitzvas that hundreds of thousands of yidden would be able to perform daily the way the torah prescribes it is something the gadol hador has no time for? Nobody thinks it is important to ask? Rav chaim himself doesnt think it is important to research? Does he wear tzitzis? Did Rav sheinberg z’l, who was rather meticulous about tzitzis spend any time on it? Why not?

October 16, 2017 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm in reply to: No mention of the huge techailes event in Boro Park on Chol Hamoed?! #1381971apushatayidParticipantAssuming one decides to “wear techeiles”, does one follow the shitta of tosfos (2 of the 4 on each corner are techiles resulting in 4 blue and 4 white per corner) ), rambam (only 1/2 of the 4 should be techeiles resulting in 7 white and one blue per corner) or the raavad (who holds an entire string is blue resulting in 6 white and 2 blue per corner.
once you decide that, then, there are many opinions how to tie the strings.

2. I can speculate all I want. I have no right to make any definitive statements in his name. Nobody does, except perhaps his closest talmidim or his sons.
3. You are making assumptions that are quite frankly incorrect. Not that it makes me an expert in his shirts and it certainly doesn’t give me a right to make definitive statements in his name, but I am pretty familiar with his hashkagos and shittos having davened in his beis medrash and attended his shiurim for a number of years.
4. I still maintain that a) despite all the Torah and chesed in brooklyn, the lifestyle lived by many is contrary to the slabodka Mussar he lived and taught and b) because of that I believe he might direct people to places like Baltimore or Cleveland over brooklyn. Feel free to disagree.October 15, 2017 10:56 am at 10:56 am in reply to: Moving to the suburbs to escape the Orthodox ghetto #1380669apushatayidParticipantThe way of life many torahdik yidden in brooklyn live is the antithesis of the slabodka mussar rav miller lived and breathed. I think it is fair to speculate what he would say today if one had to make a choice between brooklyn and say Cleveland or Baltimore or Detroit.

Exactly. Since it is Yom tov, it is only appropriate one wakes up and davens as late as possible. Then meets his friends for a trip to Manhattan or shleps with his family to an amusement park, then runs to a concert at night, then hangs with his friends at a simchas beis hashoeiva somewhere till 2am, gets home exhausted and collapses on her until the next morning. Red herring.I agree with the sentiment that it is strange (i am being nice) that the shver “needs to see” a watch on his wrist, especially on the night of his daughters wedding. I agree that it is strange that this guy is more worried about the watch than his injuries (if I was the kallah i would seriously consider breaking up, what if she dropped his fancy esrog box and badly dented it, is he going to hit her?).
