Mod-80. Perhaps I’m an einikel of the Berditchiver, who knows. Isn’t it wonderful that they take off their tefillin just before the end of davening, so that they are not wearing them while hanging around, and shmoozing?

I have an old aunt (I always thought she might be hungarian, but never asked – she’s married to my uncle, a purebred litvak – like he used to say, guys couldnt be picky in the 20’s, now they have lists as long as their arm) whose name is Rasha (the “a” is pronounced like the “o” in cot).

Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency. Hard to believe 4-8 cases in one yeshiva in a 6 month period.

RS. There is always the possibility that

. there is no earlier minyan, especially this time of the year.

. they asked a shayla and were told its better to daven like a mentch at this minyan and leave after kedusha then to play catch up and miss tefilla betzibbur at an earlier minyan.

I am baffled at the myriad of topics started that harp on negativity.

An interesting side note is that the questioner notes the young mans acknowledgement that his behavior is not proper, but as long as he is not violating anything, he doesn’t want to stop.

Moq: I think you used the term, the way R’ Moshe said it doesn’t apply 🙂

Exactly what was he addressing when he wrote that paragraph?

Forget quoting in a vaccuum. i dont think the term “ben torah” the way it is used in the tshuva is meant when it is bandied about by people in terms of shidduchim.

Regarding the vaccuum. What exactly is R” Moshe addressing. From the snippet quoted it does not appear the question was “can you define a ben torah”.

    Hashta Dasinan Lihachi.

Moving foward. Instead of whining about what the reform movement has become, get up and help out groups like Oorah, Lev Lachim and the myriad smaller local kiruv groups who reach out to those non affiliated or non orthodox affiliated and show them and teach them about the beauty of yiddishkeit from a frum (orthodox) perspective. Telling someone they are no good is easy. Showing them how to be better is very difficult, but THAT is how you reach someone, not insulting their conversion process, halachic committees and observances. It only makes someone dig in their heels and prepare for a battle.

A guy shaving his chest for cosmetic reasons, likely doesn’t have a wife (or want one). Is probably also a member of the local chapter of congregation ahavas achim.

Let’s be realistic. What the mayor will define as a “non mini” skirt likely falls far short of torah standards.

For the record, my former employer and their 1″ rule” had little to do with tsnius and everything to do with appropriate business attire. On “dress down fridays” I doubt if the skirts passed the 1″ rule from the opposite direction.

I wonder what the catholic schools will with their uniforms if the mayor gets his way.

1: I’m not checking up on my Rav.

2: My Rav is not big into “why”. If you ask a shayla, accept my answer. It doesnt matter why. I see great wisdom in that.

3: I was bringing it up as something people might err in, but have no idea why this is the case and couldnt support this position other than “my rav said”.

    Sorry for the confusion.

I wonder if they knew the history of the name Mary, or Peter. My “english name” is also a name of one of the apostles. My parents liked the name, but had no idea where it came from. They say, had they known they would never have put it on my birth certificate.

Regarding toiveling keilim. Anyone ever see people who were makpid to be toivel the keli/im AFTER they paid for it specifically and not allow the store to toivel the keilim for you while you wait on line to pay for it? Reason I ask is, only klei seuda require tevila. AFTER you purchase the kli, it becomes yours and it becomes a kli seuda. prior to purchase, it belongs to the shopkeeper and does not require tevila. I personally received a psak that I should be sure kli was toiveled after I purchased it. Did anyone else ever hear of this?

In my life I’ve met one avinoam, one tzurie-l and one frum harrison.

A former employer of mine interpreted “skimpy” (regarding length of skirt/dress) as any dress that does not hit at least 1 inch above the knee. I still remember one of the managers with a tape measure and then the announcement “christine, your dress doesnt meet the dress code, please go home and change”.

Sometimes people want an extended family (I know several ben/bas yechidim). It is possible that a BT may not have a relationship with their family that these people want. In this regard a BT is no different than an FFB from a small family or one that has issues with family.

Helpful. I was not advocating anything. I was making the point that why does it bother anyone what Gerrer Chassidim do? Who cares? If you are not a Gerrer Chassid it shouldnt matter one way or another and if you are a Gerrer Chassis it is something you should take up with your Rebbe, Mashgiach, Morah, Madricha, father, mother or whoever it is that you turn to to discuss things.

If things sound good, but one or 2 questions remain unanswered, have your son/daughter ask it straight out on a date. “I heard from people that you are ‘with it’, what does that mean?”. How would you describe yourself?

If you are embarrassed to ask a person a specific question to their face, its likely a stupid question and shouldnt be asked anyway.

“We should also try to be mekarev a Yid who became a Christian.”

Can we answer the question of the OP in the affirmative, based on your own words?

I can shoot the messenger if he distorts the message he is bringing (which nobody asked you to bring, btw). The term Reshaim was applied to those who grew up frum, knew better, and STILL joined those movements. Hardly the same as referring to a 7 year old Conservative boy as a rasha, which you did, whether you meant to or not. When you (not you specifically) use a broad brush and talk in generalizations, you say things that you may not have intended.

Home made grape juice. Is it that difficult to add water and a little sugar to a cup of wine the way Kedem does it? Prior to the Tzelemer Rav Z’l, Rabbonim knew the proper proportion of wine/water too. Its not a modern technological breakthrough that allows us to enjoy grape juice.

Darchei Noam. whatever the gedolim may or may not say about the clergy, they dont call them separate religions. They also said these things about the clergy 50-60 years ago, because those clergy grew up as FFBs. Why do these very same gedolim endorse organizations such as Aish, Oorah, Lev Lachim and the myriad of “KIRUV” (not GIYUR) organizations? Why do yeshivos send bachurim out to the hinterlands of yiddishkeit every summer under Project SEED. To seek converts to judaism? Surely there are halachic problems with the “jewish status” of lots and lots of people who identify themselves as Jewish, at the same time, to simply write them off as Jews? Reshoim? Thats anything BUT Darchei Noam.
