My policy. If you are going to ask personal questions to me about someone, I must know who you are before I answer. I have no problem answering generic questions such as how tall to someone who wont identify themselves, but thats about it.

“Rabbi” is an honorific used to denote a member of the jewish clergy.

Rav Moshe z’l used the title Rabbi and Rabbis when referring to members of the reform and conservative clergy. He used the title Rav and Rabbonim when referring to shomrei torah umitzvos.

B’H there are many gedolim in klal yisroel. Only a child engages in “my gadol is greater than yours”. An intellectually honest person acknowledges that someone from outside his community can be just as great (or even greater) as the leader of the community he lives in. Asay licha Rav doesnt mean create a score card and whoever earns the highest score, is the bigegst gadol, and the leader to accept on yourself.

In all seriousness, what is the guideline here. How many Shlomos, Mendels, Yirmiyahus, or Yechezkels came down to mitzrayim? Would anyone tell a father who gave his sone one of these names , “hey, לא שינו את שמם”.

Not shut down. Rather, inquire why the Rav wasnt an option at a time of halachic uncertainty. If there ever was a time to ask a shayla, it is when you are not sure of the answer.

Tell your bank you didnt write it and it is fraud. Sadly, this happens all too often. Someone altered several checks of a family member, luckily for him, the person tried cashing the checks outside the country which Citibank flagged up and put into “pending” status until they could verify if the checks are legit. Another collector took several blank checks from a family member and tried writing them to himself and other family members. Because the signature was so very different than the one on file (and was riddled with spelling mistakes – “fiftee for dollars” was one amount, the bank called to verify the checks.

As part of my regular halacha shiur, I will, when we get there.

Suggestions/questions about a Rav are never misplaced.

For discussion puposes, by all means, discuss. My original comment to the OP about the Rav, was a natural one. A question as to what to do in shul came up, I asked where the Rav was.

This was already addressed…however the OP inducated the question came up in shul. The logical respibse is , ask the Rav. Obviously, it wasnt a question of what do i do right now. Im a gabbai in a weekday minyan that has no Rav. My rule is KUL DIALAM GVAR, and if you want a psak, give me enough advance notice and i will call my Rav for a psak.

Mucicipalities may create and enforce laws for public safety. I witnessed a municipality shut down a minyan in someones basement because it violated a number of the codes for public meeting place. It didnt matter that it was held in a private home. The person tried to fight the municipality, and lost. The judge told him that to house services temporarily, that is one thing, but to establish a permanent place of prayer they needed a permit as a public meeting place (to get the permit, the basement would have to meet the code). to his credit, the homeowner did what was necessary to bring his basement up to code. No, this was not in Jackson, or Mahwah, it was in Sullivan County NY.

“Rav Vosners reputation as a Posek and Tzadik speaks for itself, and his relationship with Chabad speaks for itself.”

Was he a follower of chabad? Its shittos? Did he encourage his talmidim to do so? He said what any honest person would. The shluchim are wonderful people doing great things with mesiras nefesh.

Your fanciful leap that he endorsed everything the rebbe z’l said and did would be quite astonishing , except you have already proven time and time again that it is standard practice for you.

I’m not up to that rashi….I’m still before that. Dbei rav yannai, rav shila etc….how could they entertain their re be, a descendent of Eli hakohen was moshiach. Rashi doesn’t seem to explain that they thought their re be was moshiach either. Just the name. The significance? Well, I’m still trying to work out the maharasha, chidushei agados of the maharal and other classic meforshim of aggadata, none explain they thought their rebbe is or was moshiach. When I get past that line I’ll work on the next one. One thing I’ll try to work out is how daniel may have been bechezkas moshiach in his generation he wasn’t even the nasi or navi hador. Mordechai (hasach aka daniel), chaggai, zecharia and malachi were alive. But, I’m getting ahead of myself…I’m still working a few lines before.

The gemara in Sanhedrin. Did I learn it wrong? Did I misunderstand Rashi? There talmidim stated that the name of moshiach was the same as their rebbe (or close enough to the name in the passuk). Also, dbei rav yannai quoted a passuk that the name of moshiach is yannai. Could they have meant he was moshiach? Isnt there a gemara somewhere that rav yannai was from descendents of Eli hakohen? As a kohen he couldn’t be moshiach.

I don’t think hashem needs help in determining who is and who isnt the moshiach. This stupid bickering isn t bringing him any closer. Give it up everyone and listen to the Rambam who said don’t spend to much time on this since it doesn’t lead to increased ahavas or yiras hashem. Clearly the only thing this thread has increased is some peoples blood pressure.

“I would ask a posek who wasn’t my rav.”

I suppose it all depends on what someone wants from a Rav. If they want an answer machine that can provide answers not available via google, I can hear taking such an approach. Personally, our Rav is more than an answer machine, through our interactions with him he helps us grow in our avodas hashem.

I’m not quite sure what seichel hayashar. Subscribes to because I’m not fully following his/her point of view. I read the op and what she has to say and I specifically replied to get “challenge”. In short, my opinion of “meshichists” because of this this thread has moved from indifference to thinking they are nuts. IMHO she should quit while she is not too far behind.

If you dont have a Rav, how would you handle the following situation.

As a favor, we allowed someone to stay in our apartment for a few days. This guest had a chezkas kashrus when he moved in. Upon the guest moving out (upon our return) , we discovered in the garbage empty boxes from treif pizza, and other treif (not a question of whether the hechsher was reliable) foodstuff. Guest only had access to a microwave oven. Melted cheese was found in the microwave (and treif pizza boxes were found in the trash) . Must we assume treif pizza was warmed in microwave despite the readily available kosher pizza in the neighborhood. If yes, must we assume it was also used for neveila (or chazer) despite no evidence of such food. If yes, may we kasher the microwave, and how. Furthermore, this person stayed by someone in the neighborhood for a few days prior to staying by us. Must we alert the neighbors that their kitchen and utensils may be problematic. May we (without any proof, we only have the circumstantial evidence of the empty boxes which is certainly compelling evidence – but how does halacha see it)? Perhaps the person has a chezkas kashrus until there is a reason to assume otherwise? Is our “evidence” enough of a reason?

chabadshlucha:”@everyone I challenge those quiet spectators to speak up and tell me whether this has helped you understand the Lubavitch views on the Rebbe better, in a positive way, ”

No, in fact, the opposite is true. Before reading this thread, I figured I didnt quite understand and applied live and let live, now, quite frankly, I think those who believe what you claim they do are simply crazy. Sorry for the harsh response. I’m certain I am not the only one who feels this way, but am probably in the minority willing to come straight out and say it.
