I live in a vote by mail state. I sometimes miss voting in a 100+ year old Grange Hall and walking to the wood stove to warm after voting. I certainly don’t miss driving rural roads in foul weather so I could transport those without without transportation to the Grange. (I typically took election day off so that I could manage multiple trips.)

1 many states have little experience in vote by mail. I’m in a state that has been voting by mail for decades. I have confidence in the system that is in place in my state. For those of you that don’t, work for change in your own state. Study what other states who have experience in vote by mail and see how they have fine tuned their systems. No sense in reinventing the wheel when there are credible examples to follow.

Syag, the crease on his collar (and it’s shadow) was mistaken for a wire by many. What you thought was a wire on his wrist was his son Beau’s rosary that he wears on his wrist and is often seen touching. He also wears a gray ribbon which is symbolic of the fight against brain cancer on his wrist.Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

In 2017 Gavin McInnis taped a video entitled ’10 Things I hate about the Jews.

I’ve seen the PBs, 3%s and Oath Keepers up close and personal when they descended on my town (I do not live in the Ptlnd metro area). I can assure you their gear and vehicles are decked out in the symbols of the nazi’s. Gavin himself claims the holocaust never happened. He claims that the numbers of dead Jews are inflated none were intentionally exterminated.

“Kennedy was the last Democrat to do anything special for us…” Obama invested billions of US tax payer money in the defense of Israel. $20.5 billion for defense, $50 million for National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Ministry, $1.3 billion for the iron dome, an addition $38 billion in military aid (at $3.8 billion per year all opposed by Lindsay Graham and the republicans.)

New World Order came into play long before Bush’s presidency. It dates back to Nixon and his prayer breakfasts.

Pat Robertson (dead uber xtian, supporter of Israel) wrote a book in the 90s called “New World Order”. The anti semitism poured off the pages. Robertson supported the concept that the Jewish bankers were behind it all.

Quickbooks, and MS office can all be learned through tutorials, why the need for ‘classes? Yes, if you want high levels of proficiency it may take more than self directed training perhaps a skilled mentor. But these are not high level programs, it may be a good idea for these students to proceed with some discovery learning. Of course, not having access to the internet makes it difficult for a serious student to proceed with problem solving questions.

The president announced he will be signing a nationwide order forbidding evictions due to nonpayment and Covid. It has some fine print but all in all renters will be protected. Their rent’s are not going to be forgiven. I have a feeling that this will impact many hand to mouth landlords who will not be able to make their mortgage payments. Eventually it will further destabilize the NYC rental market with landlord defaults.

Charlie, I agree with you 100%. America can’t really look to the Republican party for help, they’ve confirmed they have become a cult of personality. You just need to read the party platform this week. No real plans, no real positions on issues that are vital to the economic survival of our country. Hopefully I can share your optimism in the coming weeks.

It’s hard to tell, folks invested in the stock market are doing well. Many small brick and mortar businesses won’t survive. Then there is the issue of those who will be newly homeless this year. It’s estimated that 20-40 million households are at risk of being homeless. Even if those numbers are off by half, it’s hard to see how their needs can be met over the long or short term.

I’d love to have an optimistic view on the matter of our economy but covid came at a time when our farmers were fighting the drought and tariffs and there was little industrial growth. Most jobs being added were service industry, and those are directly impacted by openings and closings of businesses nationwide.

I don’t think anyone can predict what will happen in the next 6 months to a year.

Oregonian here! I love voting at the kitchen table, no stamps necessary. Around 7 years ago an elections worker in the PDX metro area was busted for filling in incomplete ballots and marking them for republican candidates. I also recall someone busted for ballot harvesting, I don’t know if it is still illegal here, I’m guessing it went by the wayside when we choose vote by mail 20 years ago. There used to be a site you could use to track election fraud by state. Perhaps someone can try a google and see if they can find it.

Thanks to all for the advice on Bill Pay I’m going to do the switch next month. My payees aren’t part of the system but it eliminates the hassle of finding a drop box right now.

2Cents since 2006 the USPS has had to prefund pension and retirees insurance unlike any other department in the US govt. FWIW using DHL it would cost me $7 to send a document to Ptlnd OR. Remember too, not every American is middle class some are poor, live rurally and without the internet. Right now its the cost of a postage stamp for me. Frankly I stocked up on forever stamps 2 years ago consequently I’m paying less than todays rates for postage.

I’m guessing (I’ve not done the research) but I would guess that the USPS much like SNAP contributes substantially to the US economy.

Gadol hatorah I agree about paying online, unfortunately I have two payees who are old school. I do have a concern for those who live rurally, and those without the internet. Let’s face it not everyone lives in an urban area with internet service. In my area there are thousands who live without internet access due to location or expense.

AhvasChinom I have no idea if those trails are open. I don’t venture up that way very often. You can probably google and find out. It appears our state parks are filled to the brim and out of state tourists are being surcharged so that residents have priority. This summer when I do leave my pool I tend to venture off the beaten path. I usually spend a day off in the woods every week. I take a good book and settle in near a waterfall.

Goldilocks, I grew up in NJ not far from Lkwd (still have family there). I live in Oregon in the PNW. Tomorrow is a windstorm warning day with extended gusts of over 40mph predicted. The furniture on my patio and pool area is already stored away and the generator test started. fuel levels checked.

My father was a volunteer firefighter and emergency responder. His prepping kept us safe and comfortable in ’64 when Dora left us without power and water for a week, same with Alma, Doria. IRRC Doria left us without power for about 12 days. Foresight meant that during hurricanes and record snow falls we were fed and comfortable and in a position to help our neighbors who weren’t as well prepared. Hopefully the Lkwd community will have learned from this, it sounds as if this will be a record year for hurricanes. Good luck and stay safe.

From what I’ve been reading the folks in Lkwd were not very prepared for this storm even though they had days to do so. Hopefully this will be a lesson learned. Many don’t understand that the main power outages were due to the failure of substations, not trees falling. And for what it’s worth, don’t run out and just buy a generator before learning how to use it and how to safely store fuel.

Prepping isn’t hard to integrate into your daily life. Keep a minimum of a weeks worth of shelf stable food on hand, same with water. Remember water purification is dependent on power supply, as long as you’re buying cases of bottled water keep some on hand. Have some spare propane tanks on hand so you can cook on your gas bbq. Then there is the usual batteries and lights. Make sure there is a battery operated light for each of your rooms, stairways etc.

I’m currently registered Dem and have yet to receive the email that says that xPresident Obama is the official spokesman for the Democratic party. As someone who has voted for Republicans I’m still on their current mailing list and have yet to receive any info that indicates our current president is the official spokesperson for the Republican party. See how that works? Anyone on the internet can claim that someone is the official spokesperson for any party, that doesn’t make it real.

Thanks for your concern Moshefrommidwood. I don’t anticipate any children using my pool. Should an interloper choose to climb over an 8ft wood fence and find their way through some densely grown firs, they would encounter an electric fence. If that didn’t deter them ,Sam and Dave my border collies would not welcome them. If they could evade Sam and Dave I’m sure some motion sensor lights would give them a surprise. Then there is the pool fence and alarm. You see I knew I would be living out my days as a single elder in this home and I’ve done my best to secure my property and person. I’m also well armed. Teens who choose to pool hop would likely do that in town based on convenience alone.

CTL This is the first year that I’ve not done a veggie garden but with the outdoor remodel I did have water run out to a potential garden plot. Right now I’m quite satisfied with my custom CSA from a local farm.I still can, not as much as I did in earlier years when we were always inundated with guests. When blueberries were in I dried two flats and froze two. Same with strawberries. And I’ll put up some tomatoes later in the season. Last week I made a gallon of garlic dill pickles but they will need a few more days before I test one.

I think it is great that you have the youth helping out with construction. I was always included in helping my father with his projects, my brothers were not so inclined. I did all the brick work for my outdoor cooking area and the tile for the two bathrooms here. This winter I will be working on my second raw edged bookshelf, all joined.

I enjoy hearing your tales of the compound, it is heartening to hear that your grandchildren are getting experiences not found in camps and educations not found in books.

CT, when my husband and I were planning this home we initially planned on a pool. My spouse was nifter during construction and at that point in time I was I focused on getting the construction completed . I’ve been putting off this project, but now with Covid and our community pool closed it seemed to be a good time to get the work done. During fair weather I live outside most days so the pool is a respite from the heat. I did include a gas heater as well as a solar heating system. I suspect I’ll use the gas more in the spring and the solar in the fall .

Gadolhad, my home and property are private. There is both a private and ‘public’ mikvah in our town. My husband and I have always financially supported the public mikvah. As to rain, excess water will be detoured to a small riparian area that was part of this construction project.

Sam, I live outside the city limits in what we call the county, permitting was not required. All construction was done to city and state code regardless. I thank Hashem many times a day for the comfortable life I have. I do not leave gratitude to wait for a special occasion, it is part of my daily and sometimes hourly life.

Well Heath, I have to give kudos to those elders (Black Panthers) who are marching with HNGC. It’s good to see that folks their age are still involved with issues they believe in. It just goes to show that protesters aren’t limited to youth or the middle aged. I’m sure Maggie Kuhn is smiling down upon them.

Health, you do realize that the Black Panthers are now in their 80s at least? Heck Bobby Seale is 83. I seriously doubt that there a members of the New Black Panthers (and their subsequent iterations) since they have never been interested in coalition building.

Actually the NFAC is a coalition of various armed groups including members of different state chapters of the Huey P. Newton Gun club. As a Jew in the PNW I’ll take my chances with the NFAC and other minority ‘militias’ rather than siding with the 3%, Proud Boyz, Oath Keepers, American Front, Crew 38, NW Hammerskin, KKK and the other 8 ‘militias’ here in Oregon who are antis semitic. I have no intention of convincing anyone that the groups I mentioned are a far bigger threat to my life than NFAC. Your own mileage may vary.
