    Yaela

You are doing an admirable thing by covering at least to some extent while trying to make sense of what you are doing.

You write that “It’s taken from Parshat Sotah and inferred from that. It’s not stated outright.”

Consider for a moment: You wouldn’t consider keeping kosher any differently, yet the only thing written in the chumash (actually, several times) is ?? ??????? ??? ???? ???. That’s it.

So it is quite clear that we can’t just go by ???? ?????, but we need ???? ???? ?? also.

I had a wise teacher in yeshiva who would say, “Ask away all your questions, but do what needs to be done in the meantime. And even if you don’t get your answers, do it anyway!”

    always

    clearly.

BUT there’s no such concept of acceptable trolling in halacha when it entails being ???? on many issurim such as disparaging, ridiculing, name calling and degrading.

There are other trollers on this site who did not resort to such low “standards” in their quest for many posts.

    Definitely keep your job 🙂

Just remember that the most important quality to look for is midos. You were lucky that it came out before marriage and you had the strength to do something about it. If you speak to some of the divorced people you mention, many will say that they saw something during engagement & but went through with the plans anyway.

    Always

    I’m with you.

Now how are we supposed to teach young ones that name calling is improper when you have “adults” doing it? And within our fold. Now I understand better when learning that before Moshiach comes, knowing right from wrong becomes blurred…

I wonder what the Chofetz Chaim says about how many lavs are being committed when name calling.

    Anyone know?

And why this is being allowed in a yeshiva setting is unsettling.

    Mods, r u there?

Better to find out before the wedding than after.

    I respectfully disagree with WIY.

There are quite a few times that “conversation” will not highlight a person’s temper, rigidity, and stinginess as much as wedding planning will…..

As they say, you can thank him for the lessons he’s taught you and for making you one closer to your basherte…

At least we (on the whole) are ACKNOWLEDGING the problem, definitely a step up from when incidents would be swept under the carpet &/or asserting that they could never have happened.

Here’s hoping that we can finally solve the problem…

The poem is by Edgar Guest

    (continued)

When I see a deed of kindness,

I am eager to be kind.

    When a weaker brother stumbles

and a strong man stays behind

Just to see if he can help him,

then the wish grows strong in me

To become as big and thoughtful

as I know that friend to be.

    And all travelers can witness

that the best of guides today

Is not the one who tells them,

but the one who shows the way.

    One good man teaches many,

    men believe what they behold;

    One deed of kindness noticed

is worth forty that are told.

Who stands with men of honor

learns to hold his honor dear,

For right living speaks a language

which to every one is clear.

Though an able speaker charms me

    with his eloquence, I say,

    I’d rather see a sermon

than to hear one, any day.

    Magnificent, glorious world

Nothing can compare to the simple beauty of nature

Omnipotence, seen in this marvelous wonder

    Perfect in every way

Quite beautiful, watching the ocean waves crashing

Ripples and waves marking the water’s surface

Students studying by the peaceful shoreline

Tourists snapping photos of the breathtaking picture

    Unbelievably peaceful

Very pretty shells lining the shore

    With the water’s lapping sounds

    Xanax in natural form

Youth building castles in the sand

    Zestful boaters zooming by

I just read a great article by R Dovid Goldwasser on this issue.

Toward the end of the piece, the rav gives several recommendations: (paraphrasing)

    1. reduce texting during the week

    2. give away your cell phone for Shabbos (the rav says that he keeps quite a few cells for people over Shabbos & yo”t)

    3. make a buddy system where you are accountable and can discuss your efforts and successes

    4. learn about the holiness of Shabbos & the halachos.

    5. make plans for Shabbos that will keep you busy and not bored

    6. if you feel that OCD is involved, get help

“If you would like to take the first step on this journey, you can call me (R Goldwasser) at 718 677-3712 and- thought it’s not my preferred method of communication- I will send you a text of personal chizuk and berachah before Shabbos.”

Hatzlacha to anyone struggling with this issue.

Both parties need to find your banter funny for it to be funny.

When the other party clearly states that it is not only not funny but very painful, then continuing the same behavior is abusive.

In the beginning of Garden of Emuna, there’s a true story about a young woman who lost a young child (murdered & dismembered) & shortly thereafter, lost her husband. Through a dream she was showm the “story behind the story” & what really was happening.

It would be a grave injustice if I would paraphrase.

See if you could get your hands on the book.

I hope by now you called the numbers that were supplied to you on your other thread. A support group for domestic abuse survivors & a counselor specializing in it are both crucial in the healing process.

Usually a victim somehow suffered from abuse in some way growing up, and subconsciously chooses a partner who is “familiar.”

Comparing oneself to others is a form of self-abuse. A victim many times will put herself/himself down (self-abuse) even when not in the presence of the abuser.

Keep in mind that Hashem gives lots of nisyonos to high neshamos…suffering in this world is better than in the next.

We all here feel for you & are rooting for you.

Now you need to borrow the book & make the call.

    Hatzlacha.
