allsgr8Participant
coffefan- ur right! We’ll never agree! Thanks
Have a great yom tov everyone!
allsgr8ParticipantThat doesn’t mean that someone who I happen to know with diabetes needs to be related to me just because we both have the same condition!!!
allsgr8ParticipantSimchallthetime- I wldnt say VERY high but rather “higher than the general population.”
There’s a lot of conflicting info out there but in general (from the american diabetes association)
if the father has it theres a 1 in 17 chance of kids getting it
if the mother has it- theres a 1 in 25 of kids getting it
If both have it- not sure! i think 1 in 10 but dont quote me
But then again, there’s more to it than genetics and all this is not proven info as far as i know!
Besides of course that hashem runs the world!!!
allsgr8Participantyes! u make lots of sense! I dont either know what i wld do…there is some research regarding the percentage of a chance that the kids will get the disease if wither one parent has it or if both etc.. believe it or not there is a bigger chance of a child developing D if the father has it rather than if the mom does…Weird no?
My bro in law happens to know a boy with it (there we go! more boys!) and he thought it wld be a good shidduch for me but that was right after I was diagnosed and my parents were VERY skeptical about me marrying another D. Today however, I think my parents would consider..
Anyway, back to that shidduch, so this boy isnt really that type hes more of a learning boy. O well!
allsgr8ParticipantHealth- OMG! u are so insensitive! I cant believe ur saying that! Well, i shldnt b 2 surprised based on ur previous posts but i thought u learned a lesson already.
NO! He happens not to be realated to me in any way! He is my friend’s, friend’s brother. And besides, there is not one person in my immediate or extended family with either type 1 or type 2! I’m not gonna go thru this with u again but Type 1 diabetes has not been PROVEN to be genetic!
forever1- BTDT are just the right words! 🙂 I dunno i cant see my parents agreeing to the pump it at this point… wtvr!
Coffefan- lol why dont u think boys get it? Seriously though, what type of boy r u looking for?
What about all of the other 20 yr olds..what r u all looking for? would u marry a boy with type 1?
allsgr8ParticipantLOL! u crack me up..what type of boy r u looking for? I happen to know one boy with it
allsgr8Participanttrala- i really feel fine when im high no thirst or anything and its only for 1 day so i dont think its such a big deal… I prob could survive being only 200 but i dont wanna take such a chance especially with walking back and forth from shul..
Cofeefan- no prob! u cld be nosy. The reason is becuase I keep my diabetes a secret. I was diagnosed at 18 which isnt exactly the best time for s/t like that to become public..know what i mean? So, basically my parents felt that the pump wld be too noticeable..anyway, my doc started me out on shots and then wanted to put me on the pump a couple of months later. By then i was already fine with the shots and wasnt in a rush to get onto the pump… When i get married iy’h (actually engaged!) I’ll iyh switch over to the pump.
Its not that i dont think ill get married if ppl know about it but u know how it is with shidduchim…. 🙂
allsgr8ParticipantI take lantus once a day-which is the slow acting insulin, it’s equivilant to ur basal. I only take novolog when I eat or have to correct! There’s nothing I can play around with except the novolog which i dont use on a fast day cuz im not eating.
allsgr8ParticipantRemember? Im not on the pump so i dont have that flexibility. If i dont start high enough i might not make it thru the fast since i cant change the basal rate like u guys can… get it?
allsgr8ParticipantCoffefan- I have a different issue..mine is that im usually fine after the fast but for the next week or two i cant get my numbers back to normal! I think Rabbi Meisels discussed ur prob in the latest flier that he printed. check it out!
allsgr8ParticipantMosh3- Wow! you seem like a very strong boy! May hashem grant you and your entire family a year of Health, Simcha and Bracha!
allsgr8ParticipantMosh3- Im not sure how many yom kippurs you’ve gone thru with D prob more than me but this wiill iyh be my 3rd one (ive also fasted 3 Tisha B’avs) and bli ayin hara I have never gotten low enough to have to break my fast.
I start out the fast at a fairly high number (somewhere between 250 and 275 preferably) and as the day progresses I get lower and lower but i dont think i ever got lower than 90! Why do you go so low..its not like your exercising or anything?
allsgr8ParticipantCoffefan- Yes! I know exactly what you mean!!!
That’s how I felt in the beginning with pricking myself and injecting on shabbos..it was a horrible feeling but then i came to terms with it and realized that i got a mitzvah every time i turned on my meter and pricked myself 🙂 I pretty much adapted that same attitude towards fasting although it was REALLY hard in the beginning.
For some people the nisayon is to fast and for others its NOT to fast!
allsgr8ParticipantCofeefan- mosh3 is right u shld definitely consult a Rav about this but I always find that once I fall low (past the 80 point) I can get very low very quickly! just keep that in mind…
allsgr8ParticipantStrange..everyone here seems to feel thirsty when theyre high..I barely have any symtoms when im high. I feel a bit like im walking on clouds-my head is like airy..i dunno i cant explain it but i dont feel tired, sick or thirsty.
When im low i cld barely keep my balance or think clearly.
allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- ye i know what u mean..that’s basically how this forum makes me feel!
Cofeefan- Thanks for bringing up that question cuz i always wanted to donate blood but never dreamed that i’d be allowed to…! I thought it would totally be outa the question. Mayb now ill do it 🙂
So everyone, what’s the story with Yom Kippur? Any tips? i always get so nervous before the fast…
allsgr8ParticipantYe thats why i just skip the carbs as best as i can! when i get home i just correct for the high. I think its pretty safe that way. Also, they type of dancing that we do at weddings isnt that active and prob doesnt really affect the numbers much.
allsgr8ParticipantForever1- Yup! ur definitely right about overestimating..it always happens when I go out to eat or on yom tov when i plan on eating 2 desserts and then only have room for half on one! lol
allsgr8Participantsimchallthetime- when u find a solution let me know! 🙂
In the beginning I was so good about it I barely ever ate cake or cookies besides for shabbos and even then it was just a little but now….i dunno I cant seem to stay away from them for too long! yikes
allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- Oy! that must be so hard. How long after the diabetes did you get celiac? Does it make it harder to control your blood sugars?
Come to think of it my doc is forever checking my thyroid numbers…
allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- Bh no other issues besides! However, i know someone who has type 2 and hypothyroid. it would make sense that the two can come together since they are both auto immune diseases. I dont know about ciliac though- i dont think its auto-immune.
Yankdownunder- vitamin D may be effective in preventing diabetes but cant reverse it. There are links between a vitamin D deficiency and the onset of Type 1 diabetes.
allsgr8ParticipantFor those of u who are new here and didnt read all the way back i keep my D secret. Noone knows about it except immediate family. originally this was my parents decision and i didnt agree with them but nowI actually like keeping it a secret believe it or not! not sure why I feel that way but I just do. In the beginning i remember going back to school and wanting to tell all my friends what i just went thru but then those feelings faded and now i like having my own little secret:) I prob will however tell some ppl about it when i get engaged cuz to a certain extent i do wanna some of the ppl im close with to know…. sometimes ppl say funny comments like ur sooo weight conscious-how do u have so much self control, or I have one friend who always tells me about this person she knows who is NEBACH type 1 Diabetic… i just laugh to myself and say just wait till she finds out!!! 🙂
allsgr8ParticipantSimchaalthetime- welcome back! Glad u rejoined! 🙂
allsgr8ParticipantBOSD- i guess were even cuz im sorry if i came across harsh…i totally did not mean to!! sorry again!
About the last friend getting engaged..ye it could be tough im pretty much going thru that too now..one of my last friends just got engaged and all the rest just told me theyre expecting lol 🙂
Ur advise about telling boys sounds good but when do u tell them? is it after the 3rd date like most of us were told to say or do u wait till later on in the game?
Also, do u keep ur condition a secret or is it something that ur friends (and shadchanim) know about?
allsgr8ParticipantC’mon guys I cant believe ur talking like that! Listen, we all know that shidduchim isnt an easy thing but we also know that the father above who made our parents meet will also find a way for us to meet our bashert..more or less dates doesnt matter all we need is one right guy to come along. But in the mean time enjoy ur single status because once u get married life brings on a lot more responsibilities, u cant just pick up with ur friends and go on vacation or out to dinner.. think about the pretty side of life instead of the depressing side… And then about the diabetes part, now that could be rough- I only have diabetes for close to three years now so maybe i didnt reach the burnt out stage yet but when i find myself slacking off and feeling discoursaged I try to remind myslef of all the ppl who wish that this was there illness and not something much worse. I also tell myself that every time i check my numbers i get a mitzvah of v’nishmartem me’od…
We’re all here to help eachother so just keep venting and growing from it! 🙂
Health- coffee has no impact on my BGL btw!
allsgr8Participantoy! Do u suppose there is any specific reason for the low or does it happen to u occasionally?
allsgr8ParticipantWelcome BOSD!! Tell us about yourself please. Are you a male or female, how old, how long have you had diabetes for? is it type 1-I assume so if your in shidduchim now. And btw when you say “barely anything comes of that” do you mean that you havent dated a lot or that your diabetes doesnt affect ur shidduchim? Again, Welcome here and so glad u joined!
allsgr8ParticipantAhh! so then it does make sense…Like i said before im not on the pump ….so i dont really know what to tell you! In my case I wld probably have to drink juice before i go to bed bec I dont have the flexibility of switching basal hour by hour..Could you try to exercise earlier in the night like around 630 rather than later? mayb that’ll help.
Wait, i just thought of another thing, u mentioned that u lost almost 10 pounds that cld make a difference in the amount of insulin you need! (both basal and bolus) I think u should speak to ur doc!
allsgr8ParticipantWhat kind of exercise do you do? I havent been good with exercise at all lately between school and work but I used to brisk walk for 45 minutes a night and it didnt really affect my sugars during the night..I had overall good numbers throught the day and night but i didnt see any particular changes.
The only form of exercise that really makes a difference for me is swimming! whew I cld eat a whole meal without having to give any insulin after i swim.
allsgr8Participantlol cofeefan sounds familiar…if i ever needa switch my appointment i have to call like 2 months before! (if i have to switch it last minute i obviously didnt know that 2 month ago..duh?) I go every three months but last time my doc told me that i can wait 4 months cuz everything looked bh gr8!
allsgr8ParticipantLooks like i missed a lot of action here while i was at work lol. I have that situation every couple of months, I usually have to adjust my lantus (in ur case basal rate I think). And then i swing right back. The only other cause has been a bad insulin pen. Usually it happened after my pen spent too much time in the heat. I bought this great pen cooler from frio. It keeps the insulin at room temp! i use it all summer.
allsgr8ParticipantI wasnt able to find out which perekim are for zivugim so how about if we each say perek chaf (20) and kuf lamed (130) everyday with everyone who needs shidduchim in this forum in mind 🙂
May we share in simchos very soon!!
allsgr8ParticipantSmart decision!
The right one at the right time iy’h!!
btw I hope all of us 20 yr olds are not forgetting to daven for eachother! Maybe we shld all say a certain perek every day for all of us. Anyone know which perek is for shidduchim?
allsgr8ParticipantI’ve never had to tell a date yet so i can just tell u what i think might work..ive never done it yet! I wld probably bring it up more towards the mid of the date cuz u dont wanna start off with it..and u dont wanna end off with it either cuz he’ll probably have a ton of questions.. Maybe say that there’s something u have to tell him and then spill the beans he’ll prob be shocked and wont know what to say (which is normal) then maybe tell him the whole story about how u got diagnosed ..(my story is quiete intersting) then tell him what its like to live with type 1. that ur NORMAL ..etc.. dont forget to tell him that u try to keep it quiet and he shld only discuss it with whoever he needs to.. and if u dont want the shadchan to know in case they might not redt u anyone else tell him that too!
Hatzlacha! and dont forget to tell us when u get engaged iyh!!!! 🙂
allsgr8ParticipantYe it was scary but i learned a good lesson for life: Rather go to sleep high than low!!
allsgr8Participantcofeefan- no prob! What happened was that I came home from a friends shower at which i ate a muffin and some fruit. I didnt have where to inject myself so i waited till i got hom. When i got home I checked my numbers and just corrected accordingly. I went to sleep probably almost 2 hours later and checked my numbers b4 i got into bed. I was still very high so i injected again thinking that i hadnt given enough the first time. The next think I knew I woke up with hatzola and my whole family in my bedroom. (They woke up cuz they heard me fall off of my bed) The weird thing was that I remembered seing the time at around 2:30 am and when I woke up it was around 4 i think. I think that what happened was that i woke up and tried to get out of bed to check my numbers and I must have collapsed into a coma. This happened about 1 and 1/2 years ago, about a year after i was diagnosed.
allsgr8Participantwell i obvously dont know how long i was in a coma im just guessing based on what happened b4 and after
allsgr8Participantsomewhere in the 40’s i think (except for the time that i was in a coma for almost an hour)
allsgr8ParticipantI also have the dots but theyre not that noticeable to anyone else besides ourselves probably… If your dots are biggish maybe try using your lancet on a lower number.. i do mine on #2.
Rebbitzen- I sort of answered your question on the top of the page..its something to do with the nerve ending getting degenerated from too much glucose circulating in the blood. It could cause s/0 to lose feeling on the bottom of their feet. It goes into the same category as kidney problems, eye problems etc.. Just like your supposed to have your eyes checked out once a year, you should have the bottoms of your feet checked out. If you have good A1c’s you’ll be fine iy’h!
allsgr8Participantcofeefan- well ill make up a recipe. if lets say the recipe calls for 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup orange juice and a stick margarine. You do the math:
flour is 22 grams of carb for 1/4 cup, 22×4= 88 carbs
sugar is 4 grams carb for 1 tsp. (there are 3 tsp in a tbsp. and 8 tbsp in 1/2 cup) so, we need to calculate for 24 tsp. at 4 grams each. 4×24=96 carbs
eggs-no carbs
orange juice- 29 grams of carb for 1 cup. 26/4=6.5 carbs
SO, 88+96+6.5= 190.5 grams of carbs in the entire recipe! divide this by the amount of cookies the recipe makes, lets say 12 cookies = 15.88 = 16 carbs for each cookie!!! Whew!
allsgr8Participantcofeefan- if you really wanna have an easier time with homemade stuff you can calculate the amount of carbs in the recipe and then divide it by the serving size that your eating. Its easy once you get the hang of it! Also, i often find that the nutrition facts are not correct for many some store bought items which doesnt make any sense to me..like if ill give myself insulin according to the carbs listed ill be really high after i eat the food!!!??? Any one else have that problem?
allsgr8Participanttralala- when i said I dont eat real sugar i meant i dont eat candies and taffys etc. When i eat cake you bet i eat the real stuff!!!
allsgr8Participantcofeefan- I like the idea about thinking 20-30 yrs ahead of time..that might help! thanks 🙂
forever1- I do agree with you to some extent but I dont feel that its the right way to live… my numbers are way better when i stick away from junk food (almost completely) and stick to protein, veggies ,whole wheat crackers and ww bread etc… also, the prob with eating cake and stuff is that i always take a guess as to how much to cover for it but sometimes im right and often im wrong!! 🙁
allsgr8ParticipantI feel like im really slacking off in my eating habits and numbers..any suggestions? I started eating cake and all the good stuff (no real sugar of course but everything else) and i just shoot more insulin for it! I know this is really not good but i cant seem to get myself back on track. PLEASE HELP!thanks
allsgr8ParticipantIt has something to do with the nerve endings getting degenerated..too much glucose in the blood over long periods of time can cause it along with kidney problems..if you have good AIC’s and control your blood sugars you will be healthy iyh until 120!!
allsgr8Participantforever1- ahhhh i get it!
allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- That’s like saying that someone who practices medicine is not a doctor, he’s just someone who practices medicine!! wether i consider myself someone with diabetes or a diabetic it is essentially the exact same thing. I absolutely do not think of myself any less because of the D I actually have to say that I bh have a wonderful attitude about it and about life in genereal and sometimes I even consider myself luckier than others because of the D 🙂 Listen, I understand why you feel like making it public but I still dont think that that is the right way for ME PERSONALY to go about it! you dont have to agree with me but at least try to understand me and others who feel the same way! 🙂
allsgr8Participantrebbetzin- we dont walk on egg shells about it in my house but the truth is the D thing came about cuz in the beginning I couldnt get the word out of my mouth..It was hard to consider myself a DIABETIC! wtvr..to each their own.
about the lancet thing..I see im the best so far! whoohoo!!!
Rabbi Meisels once put up a really cute line when it was time to change the clock. He said: Everyone its time to change the clock now that means its time to change your lancet too!! that was when i realized i wasnt nuts for not changing it…lol
BTW to all of us in shidduchim, dont forget, today is Tu Ba’av! A day thats a mesugal for shidduchim. Let’s not forget to daven for eachother!
allsgr8ParticipantI’d like to take a poll here: How often do you change your lancet? or when was the last time you changed it??
I used to change it every time i checked by BGL but now I change mine like 3 times a week! Yikes! im so lazy
allsgr8Participantforever1-the reason i dont like using the FWD group is because i think my email comes up every time..im not so comfy with that. .btw If noone knows you here whats the matter with it being public? Do you mind if I ask why you dont discuss it with your fam and parents only occasionally? Who else do you discuss it with if not for them? The truth is that its not really like I tell anyone what i feel but if I have questions or something funny happens at least they can understand..
