The pasuk says “Va’yar HaSh-m… v’heenay tov me’od”.
HaSh-m, of course, in His infinite wisdom, can see that it is tov me’od.
We, in our extremely limited wisdom, have to strive to realize and understand this fact.
It is a big madraiga to attain.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantThey’ve removed “under G-d”?
When did that happen, (I guess I missed it)?
– No wonder He left…
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantHaLeivi…
LOLOL!!! Good one!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantWhat I personally find EXTREMELY funny is (because of the difference in pronunciation of that letter) when people either…
– want to show how “Israeli” or “Zionist” they are, and therefore speak ‘SefardiT’, – will take a word that has a ‘samech’ or a ‘sin’ in it, and (because they can’t spell) pronounce THAT letter with a T sound! (i.e. turn ALL S’s to T’s)
OR CONVERSELY…
-Those who want to show they are strictly Ashkenazi (and/or anti-Zionist) will do the opposite, and (because THEY can’t spell) pronounce words with the letter ‘tet/tes’ with an ‘S’ sound!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantOnly ISRAELI cats!!!
You can shoo them, stamp your feet, yell at them…
and they just look at you, they don’t move!
So if one is sitting by your front door, you have to either have the guts to walk right up to, and right by them, or be prepared to spend some time outside!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI once heard a lecture from a Breslover Rav and he was talking about his preparations in Israel for his trip to America.
In the course of this, he says (not EXACTLY word for word, but close) “I was packing my bags and Baruch HaSh-m one of the water pipes in my apartment burst, and Baruch HaSh-m my whole apartment was flooded…”
I did a “double-take”. Did he just say Baruch HaSh-m for his apartment FLOODING?!?!?
We always hear how one should bless HaSh-m on the (seemingly) bad as well as on the good, but who can really do that?
I must say I was truly taken aback when this rav said this.
It was not “for effect” or to be “cute”, he truly had internalized this concept and was saying with true sincerity “Baruch HaSh-m for my pipes flooding my apartment”!
This a madraiga we all need to aspire to!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantmikehall12382…
It could also give boys who are unable or unwilling to excel in limudai kodesh (but are still good, frum boys) to escape the stigma of being called “bums” (which becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy – leading to boys off the derech a.k.a. kids at risk)…
-and INSTEAD, give them another option in life in which they CAN excel, enabling them to grow up to be solid, frum, Torah-supporting baalabatim.
This is definitely a mehalaiych whose time has come!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI think it would be a GREAT idea for the last two years of high school (and beyond).
Prior to that, I think kids would probably be too young to know which specific skill area they would want to study.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantWOLF…
LOLOL!!!
Good stuff! Reminds me of MY Shabbas table…
To the 2 year old grandchild: NO Chaim’el you don’t need the becher full to the very top like Saba.
To the 29 year old son: Mendel, your little Eli is absolutely adorable, but does he have to be the centerpiece ON the table?
To my dear ashet chayil: You really don’t have to give me “the look” because I…
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI would say it’s just about right.
The problem that I have seen is that some parents (and some rebbes) give the kids the idea that limudai chol is “shtus” and “bitul zman”.
This makes things very tough on the secular teachers, and down the road – on the (grown up) kids too, (when they can’t speak English properly, write a letter in even semi-decent English, and lack other basic, necessary secular knowledge).
AinOhdMilvadoParticipanta little history lesson…
I remember, going back to the mid-late ’60s,
the regular police in Israel did not even carry handguns
(let alone automatic rifles). All they carried was a metal rod about 18″ long.
Yeridas hadoros. They could never survive that way today.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantAt the very least, it’s like chicken soup for a cold…
It may not have a real source,
but it couldn’t hurt! 🙂
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI know a frum police officer in Flatbush. He happens to be a great guy, – and the truth is, in general, I do NOT like cops.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantBe Happy…
A few VERY important tips for you.
-Arrange as much as you possibly can prior to your arrival in Israel, i.e. regarding a job, housing, schools for your children, etc.
-Most probably it would be wise for you to arrange a “pilot trip” to begin these hachanot BEFORE actually going on aliya.
REMEMBER: kol hatchalot kashot! Before you move, make yourself a promise that you will not even think about leaving and coming back here for AT LEAST one year. Why? Because (even if you have spent time in Israel before) all the major obstacles will hit you in those first 6-12 months, i.e. adjusting to your new home, adjusting to the language (even if you think you speak Hebrew pretty well), adjusting to new schools and friends for your kids, learning where and how to find things (like stores, medical care, government offices, etc.) adjusting to a new job and/or getting retraining for a new job.
All these things and MORE can be overwhelmingly problematic and they will all be hitting you at once. It may be very tempting to just say “What do i need this for? I’m going back!”
Get through that first year and you will look back and say “I made it” and you will be very (justifiably) proud that you didn’t give up when the going got tough!
And… like I said above – contact Nefesh B’Nefesh. They will help you every step of the way and GREATLY enhance and ease your experience.

“I know you want to GET married, but do you want to BE married”.
Well said!!!
If engaged couples would spend as much time thinking about the MARRIAGE as they do thinking about the WEDDING, they would be very wise indeed!

I agree with you.
I was not suggesting that young people “put off marriage for YEARS l’hitbonen”.
Young men WILL spend some serious time to investigate what yeshiva (and/or college) to go to. They will look at literature about a school, talk to others who learn or learned there, visit the place, meet rabanim, etc.
Isn’t investigating YOURSELF at least as important?
What I am suggesting is that young people spend SOME time, a few months (at least a few weeks) in some serious, HONEST introspection about what they want for themselves for the future, what kind of a life, where geographically, what source of parnassa, etc. What kind of life do they see themselves living ten years down the road? Sure, they may have some changes of mind as time goes on, but develop some type of plan and path for yourself.
My thought is, how can you know who is right for YOU, when you don’t even know who YOU are?
February 15, 2011 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm in reply to: Predicting success of marriages and Kesher with a Rov #741670AinOhdMilvadoParticipantOfcourse…
Flexibility is, without any doubt, a very important ingredient for a successful marriage, but one must know from what starting point they are being flexible from.
I see so many young people getting married that clearly do not really know who and what THEY are, and/or want to be.
Then, a few years down the line, when they finally have started thinking about this question, and started formulating and crystalizing what their own hashkafos are, – about frumkeit, about politics, about career, about financial issues, about children, etc., etc., etc. – then they realize that their spouse is on a totally different page.
How much better off they would have been if someone would have advised them to do some hitbonenut, some serious introspection, about these issues BEFORE they sought out a mate.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantIs there ANY other “book” ever written that can be read and re-read and studied and re-studied for THOUSANDS of years, and STILL, to this very day, be finding new and deeper meaning and understanding in it!?!?!

February 15, 2011 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm in reply to: Predicting success of marriages and Kesher with a Rov #741665AinOhdMilvadoParticipantLet me share my thought on one of the MAJOR causes of marriage problems, that I’ve never heard anyone address…
When going into shidduchim, everybody wants to know EVERYTHING about the person they are being redt to, BUT…
I really believe that though they want to know all that…
VERY often, the person does not know THEMSELVES!
Do they really know their OWN hashkafos?
Do they know where they THEMSELVES fit in to the frum world – i.e. do they see themselves (for the future) as “yeshivish”, as “chassidish”, as “modern”, or perhaps as some hybrid combination of these or other sub-groups in orthodoxy??
Have they REALLY made an HONEST assessment about what is important to THEMSELVES in things like ruchniyus and gashmiyus?
Do they REALLY know what THEY want for the future?
And… if they do NOT yet really know THEMSELVES, how can they possibly decide on ANOTHER person who will be right for THEM?
I feel before a person says he or she is ready for a shidduch, they should think long and hard and deep about who THEY are and who THEY want to be for the future.
Only then is there a chance to find the right “ezer k’negdo”.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantYou should definitely contact Nefesh B’Nefesh.
They can help you with the information you are looking for here AND they can help you in MANY other ways.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantThose who want to find a heter (or even a “chiyuv”) to act like a fool will undoubtedly find it.
Aizeh hu chacham? – Ha’ro’eh et ha’nolad.
…and if we can’t expect 15 and 16 year olds to be chachamim, at least let their parents and mechanchim act with chachmah.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipants2021…
What, exactly, do you mean by “advice”?
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantDaas Yochid…. truth be told… and others…
I hardly think the din of a mosair applies to one who is trying to keep Yidden from endangering their own lives and the lives of others, AND/or making a chilul HaSh-m!
It is odd that so many bochrim choose to be “machmirim” when it comes to the issue of drinking on Purim.
How many times have we all seen inebriated bochrim throwing up on the streets, or wandering into the streets (into traffic) or just generally “making a scene” on the streets on Purim that is truly a chilul HaSh-m?!?
If someone can prevent this, that is NOT “mosair”, it’s a mitzvah!
February 13, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm in reply to: to marry a singer or not.. thats the question! #741694AinOhdMilvadoParticipantA frum person should not expect singing to be their (or their spouses) ONLY means of parnassa.
Even goyish singers who are very “in” today, with rare exception, are “out” tomorrow. Now with goyim, the short time they are “in” may be enough, because they can make millions during that time.
A frum singer though has a MUCH, MUCH smaller target audience, and even IF you are very successful and popular your income will never rival what a goyishe singer can make. Also, no matter how good or popular a singer you may be, there are always new people coming along, THEY will become the ones in demand, and your star will fade.
There are A FEW EXCEPTIONS to this rule, but you can count them on one hand, and a person would be foolish to think he will be that exception. My thought would be, if you love to sing and are good at it, GO FOR IT. Use the gift HaSh-m gave you, BUT – go to school at the same time to learn how to earn a more realistic, long-term parnassa. You don’t want to be a has-been at the age of 30 with a wife and kids and no income.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantOn a serious note…
Speaking to the British court who sentenced him to be hanged for his participation in activites of the Irgun Tzva’ee Le’Umi…
“When the prevailing government in any country is not legal, when it becomes a regime of oppression and tyranny, it is the right of its citizens – more than that, it is their duty – to fight this regime and to topple it. This is what Jewish youth are doing and will continue to do until you quit this land, and hand it over to its rightful owners: the Jewish people. For you should know this: there is no power in the world which can sever the tie between the Jewish people and their one and only land. Whosoever tries to sever it – his hand will be cut off and the curse of God will rest on him for ever.”

I don’t think one necessarily HAS TO “cut off a pony tail to qualify”, BUT…
If the pony tail is not because you are a nazir, then you should ask yourself exactly WHY you DO have the pony tail?
The honest answer to that question MAY make you realize that perhaps you should think about cutting it.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantIt’s always their word against yours, and 99% of the time the judge (if you fight a ticket) will believe THEM!
A few years ago I got a ticket on Ocean Parkway (a real ticket trap, by the way) for going through a red light. The truth was that it was just turning to yellow as I went through, and was definitely NOT RED.
I fought it in traffic court, and the cop (who clearly had done this a million times before and had a prepared line to say to the judge) said that the light was full red 3 car lengths before I entered the intersection. This made it sound like he was really sure of being in the right. Actually this was a TOTAL LIE.
Nevertheless I was found guilty. Afterwards I saw the cop outside the courtroom and I went over and asked him point blank “How could you say say something like that which was completely untrue?!?”
He just smirked and shrugged his shoulders as if to say “Tough Luck!”

AinOhdMilvadoParticipantStart with “doodle jump”s recipe above, then…
for the last half hour of cooking, (OR when you are heating to serve it, if you’re not serving immediately after cooking) Put brocolli florets over the top of the meat, and then a can of pineapple slices (or chunks)along WITH the juice in the can.
Cook another 30 minutes in oven.
Yum! – I’m getting hungry and it’s only 9:20 in the morning!

As always, it is all up to US!
I don’t know how old you are, but I remember very well May and the first few days of June of 1967.
The TV news showed tens of thousands (at least) of Egyptians out in the streets of cairo shaking their fists, screaming “Kill the Jews! Throw the Jews into the sea!”
This, while (then) President Nasser of Egypt blocked the Gulf of Aqaba, closing Israel’s port of Eilat to shipping, and move ONE THOUSAND tanks into the Sinai Peninsula on to Israel’s south western border. Israel was outmanned and outgunned like 50 to 1.
It was very scary.
And then k’heref ayin, in the blink of an eye, HaSh-m worked nissim and nifla’ot, and in just SIX days (really most of it occurred in the first ONE or two days!) Egypt was defeated, along with Syria and Jordan (and the other yishmaeli savages who helped them) and the Golan was in Jewish hands, Yehuda and Shomron (i.e. Hevron, BeitLechem, etc.) were in Jewish hands, and of course ALL of Yerushalayim -for the first time in 2,000 years – was in Jewish hands! It was a very amazing time to be alive.
The bottom line, -we do not have to fear.

AinOhdMilvadoParticipantTheLargeWhiteUrsineReturns…
If I might offer a suggestion that might save you some money.
Try contacting P.E.T.A. As I’m sure you know, they are always breaking in to laboratories to “liberate” animals that are held there for testing new medications. The problem they have is, once they free them, they don’t know what to do with them.
Perhaps you could offer to take these creatures off their hands. I’m sure a nice lab rat or rabbit would be a nice treat for Lybush.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantTheLargeWhiteUrsineReturns….
You are very creative! Just be sure to remove the bullets from his food before serving. We wouldn’t want Lybush to get lead poisoning!
B.T.W. – That gives me a GREAT idea. Maybe someone could open a glatt kosher slaughterhouse in China, ship us the meat frozen, and it would still be way cheaper than buying glatt kosher American beef!!!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantTheLargeWhiteUrsineReturns…
I believe you!!! But… you must need some HUGE litterbox!!!
and… you must have an even bigger bill at Glatt Mart than my wife does!!!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantShrek…
On your “to do” list, you skipped the most important one…
Close up all holes and spaces from outside to inside!!!
All those other things are be’dieveds, hole closing is le’hatchila!!!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantThe bottom line is that you have to ask a posaik whether shovelling (within an eiruv) is allowed.
He MAY tell you that if you truly felt it was a sakana to walk on the unshoveled area, you should have not gone to shul.
If you didn’t feel it was a sakana until AFTER you fell, maybe the homeowner didn’t feel it was a sakana either, and can’t be blamed any more than you for the choice you made to walk there.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantAn owl would be an interesting addition to one’s home.
They love to snack on rodents.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantNever thought I would agree with “real-brisker”, but this is a really revolutionary thought…
Once you have an idea of what you are prepared to spend, ASK THE CHASAN what he would like in that price range.
Don’t just get some “standard” gift to be “yotzai”.
Maybe he doesn’t wear or want a watch.
Maybe he doesn’t wear or want cufflinks.
Maybe he already has a nice Shas.
ASK HIM.
And… If he comes back to you with something that’s not up YOUR alley, SO WHAT, the gift is for HIM, – NOT YOU!
It’s an easy way to score points with your new, soon-to-be son-in-law (and make him more amenable to coming to you for Shabbases and Yom Tovim! 😉
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantPopa…
There’s another PRO you can add to the list…
If you want a rat, you don’t even have to go to a pet shop or a shelter to get one – You can just pick one up one the way home from work on the subway!
But, alas, we digress…
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantPopa…
I’m a little concerned with what my neighbors will think when they see me walking down the street with my pet rat on a leash.
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantHealth said…
“They take it with them to their family and return to their nest. They die there.”
Sorry “Health”, but you are incorrect.
What you said IS true regarding ROACH bait, but NOT mouse bait.
Mice do NOT bring the bait to the mishpacha, roaches DO.
Mice eat whatever they eat on the spot and then go vaiyter.
Fortunately, they do NOT usually die in their “nest”, i.e. in your walls, (although SOMETIMES they do).
Mouse poison works in 2 ways (not to get too gross)- it contains an anti-coagulant, which means they bleed internally, AND a dessicant that makes them very thirsty, which, fortunately, usually sends them back outside in search for water, and that is where they die.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using poison or traps, be sure they can NOT be reached or touched by children!
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantNo disrespect, but…
The pictures of the “mouser rebbe” work much better if you put a tray of mouse poison next to them.
(The fact that “he saved someone in Europe – that the mice ate up the papers and the case was dropped” does not mean that we are obligated to believe that his picture keeps mice away today.)
AinOhdMilvadoParticipantThere is a MEHADRIN kosher KFC in Yerushalayim.

Why wouldn’t you take these supplements on Shabbas?
They are NOT medicine, they are FOOD supplements.
(btw… MOST, if not ALL of us are, unfortunately, “deficient from diet” and intelligently taking supplements is very important.)
