    TO: oomis1105 and others…

Regarding your story about paintings on pieces of destroyed Sifrei Torah.

If I hadn’t seen this with my own eyes, I probably would doubt the veracity of this story, but I DID see it with my own eyes…

Many years ago the Rav of the shul where I davened at that time, got up to give his weekly drasha on the parsha. He began talking about the Holocaust and held up a painting for us to see (it was approximately 16 inches by 18 inches as I recall it). It was a portrait of a nazi officer that he’d had painted of himself. Then the Rav turned it over – it was painted on the back of Torah klaf. Very upsetting and horrifying of course, but what was the connection to that week’s parsha? – It was painted on the back of the parsha of Amalek!

My father z”l was an officer in the American army in Europe in WW2.

He told me that one night when his unit (out in the field) prepared to go to sleep for the night (of course there were men doing guard duty) he decided to set up his sleeping roll about 50 yards away from the regular soldiers, right next to a row of low bushes, so he could have a little privacy. He went to sleep.

In the morning when he got up, he saw that on the other side of the bushes were fresh boot prints from a German patrol that had passed within just a couple of feet of him during the night, but obviously had not seen or heard him.

This may not sound like such a dramatic, miraculous story, but if this miracle had not happened, I WOULDN’T BE HERE NOW TO TELL IT.

    Daniel Breslauer…

Perhaps you (or others) know this already, but there actually is a reason that the word cat (chatul) and diaper (cheetul) are so similar.

We obviously know what a diaper (pamper) is designed to do, i.e. to absorb _ _ _ _. For those familiar with cats, you know that cats (unlike dogs, for example) go in a litter box, and outdoors, out in nature, they go somewhere where their waste will be absorbed and/or they cover it up with dirt. This similarity in the natural behavior of cats, and the purpose of a diaper, is the reason why a cheetul is called a cheetul (or at least so I was told by an Ivrit expert i know.)

    This was a RIOT!

I was reading a list in Hebrew of ‘segulot’ for different things (i.e. parnassa, shidduchim, etc.) and though I understood 99% of it, I thought it would be fun to see how Google translated some of what was in there.

They translated ‘segula l’ben’ as “for a purple son”.

    Pac-man…

    You missed one critical point.

Their peace requirement is not JUST for the ENTIRE land,

it’s for the entire land WITHOUT any LIVING Jews in it!

Note what I mentioned above about what happened (just as one example) in Hevron in ’29, when the yishmaelim HAD the whole land and we had NO state AT ALL.

Please don’t be naive enough to think that these savages would let Jews live in an arab “palestine”. This is not just MY opinion, THEY have said themselves, b’faiyrush, that they will not allow Jews to live in “palestine”.

-For further clarification of the yishmaeli position (by a yishmaeli), please see…

“Land for Peace” is a moot issue.

–Our Pereh/adam neighbors have no intention of allowing a Jewish State of ANY size or with ANY borders!

–They started the war in ’67 BEFORE there was an “occupation” of the “West Bank”, Gaza, and the Golan.

–They massacred Jews in Hevron in ’29, almost 20 years BEFORE there was any ‘State of Israel’ at all.

–AND… as “Ofcourse” mentioned (above), expelling 9,000 Jews from Gush Katif (and destroying their lives) and giving the land to those savages, did nothing but give them a terrorist base right on our border.

So… “Land for Peace” – well, no disrespect to the Gedolim who may have opted for it, but that opinion is only theoretical, since no yishmaeli is offering to give peace for land – unless it’s the ENTIRE Land.

I think you would be very surprised to find out how many unassuming, quiet members of shuls (and parents of yeshiva kids) are licensed gun owners. Most of these gun owners go with some regularity to a range to maintain and improve their skills. It still always (pleasantly) surprises me, when I go, to see so many yarmulka wearing (many bearded) Yidden at the range with their own very serious firearms.

I think many, if not most of them would be happy to take turns in a rotation, to do guard duty at a shul and/or yeshiva. Since the police can NOT be everywhere, it would benefit the police (and the Jewish community) to provide additional training (after an additional background check) for these volunteers. This would be similar to the Mishmar Ezrachi in Israel, where ARMED civilians, AFTER formal training, patrol their neighborhoods, to supplement the work of the police and army.

Will it happen? Probably not. -At least not until, chalila, a tragedy occurs, – and THEN, it probably WOULD happen.

I do not at all find the subject of security at Jewish institutions to be amusing.

It seemed by your original comment that YOU did. If I misunderstood you, then I apologize.

You wrote “You indicated an armed guard is not enough, since he can be taken down with an AK47. Well two can also be taken down like that, with a couple of terrorists.”

When I said “two” armed guards, I said AT LEAST two, and I suggest they not being armed with just a low capacity pistol, but a high capacity semi-automatic rifle. Such rifles ARE legal (with a permit) and high capacity magazines should be authorized by the NYPD for this type of security use by potential guards who pass necessary background checks, and qualify after taking a training course.

I pray that we never need to use this type of protection, but better to have it and never need it, than need it and not have it.

    Here’s a reverse of the stories above…

An Israeli arrived in America with very little English ability, and a Hebrew-English dictionary.

Being hungry, he went in for breakfast to a dairy restaurant. He wanted a hard boiled egg and toast. After looking in his dictionary for the English for “kasheh”, he asked the waiter for “a difficult egg”!

Back in my kibbutz days, one day a new American volunteer arrived from the airport at the Egged bus stop at the entrance to the kibbutz.

He learned what little Hebrew he knew from a dictionary he had studied from on his flight to Israel.

As he was clumsily shlepping his bags off the bus, he yelled to the driver “Lo la’lechet – yaish lee ohd shnai matosim al ha’autobus!” i.e. Don’t go, I have 2 more planes (instead of mizvadot – suitcases) on the bus!

The driver just smiled and rolled his eyes.

    “our schools aren’t safe!”

How right you are! AND – neither are our shuls!

Will it take a terrible tragedy before EVERY school and EVERY shul has (AT LEAST) 2 WELL-armed guards by the entrance?!?

Does it make you feel better that on (some) Jewish holidays there are at (some) shuls ONE policeman armed with a handgun?

That is a joke! If, chalila, a van with a few of our “cousins” with AK’s showed up, that poor cop would be history in about a second.

The liberal media make people think that high-capacity gun magazines should be banned because only psychopath murderers have use of them. NOT TRUE! Would you want the guard at your child’s school to have (IF chas v’shalom it was ever needed) just 10 shots at their disposal or 30?!?

Jews need to get over their fear of firearms and think about current real world potential situations.

I used to have a service business and did work in the south tower of the WTC, on a high floor, every month for over 10 years.

I often saw small planes flying down the Hudson River LOWER than the altitude I was at in the building, and sometimes even thought ‘Gee, if a pilot just made a slight momentary slip in his steering, he could crash into the building’.

So, of course, the day of the attack, when I first heard the news, I thought, ‘Hey, what I had thought about, actually has happened!’ Even a bit later when I heard that the “tower had fallen”, I thought they meant the big TV antennae on TOP of the tower. I never dreamed that they meant the WHOLE building!

Of course, shortly thereafter, I heard about the second tower being hit, and then the Pentagon, and it was clear that we were under attack.

In May of 1967, Egypt committed an internationally recognized act of war by blockaiding the Straits of Tiran, blocking shipping to Israel’s port of Eilat. They also massed ONE THOUSAND TANKS in the Sinai Peninsula on Israel’s south-western border. In the streets of Cairo and Damascus tens of thousands of arabs filled the streets screaming for the destruction of Israel.

At 07:45 on June 5, 1967, B’ezrat HaSh-m, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) under Maj. Gen. Mordechai Hod launched a 3 wave massive airstrike that destroyed the majority of the Egyptian air force on the ground. By noon, Israel, using almost ALL of it’s 196 aircraft, destroyed the Egyptian, Jordanian and Syrian Air Forces, with about 450 aircraft. It was also very successful in disabling 18 airfields in Egypt, hindering Egyptian Air Force operations for the duration of the war.

    Ofcourse…

    Please don’t misunderstand.

I am NOT suggesting by what I am about to say, that we could have (in the past) or can (in the present or future) overcome HaSh-m’s decrees by ‘kochi v’otzem yadi’ –

    however…

I still believe we DO have to do OUR hishtadlus.

Since you said you understand the spiritual aspect, I will answer regarding the ‘physical’ aspect.

    By that I mean…

First of all, just realizing the need to be on ‘konenut’, on alert, to what is going on in the world, in Eretz Yisrael, in our own home country and city. To NOT hide our heads in the sand regarding dangers that are arising for Klal Yisrael, and to NOT either delude ourselves into thinking everything is OK, when it is NOT, or to consciously or sub-consciously be somaiych on nissim to save us from trouble.

Secondly, YES, I DO mean that Jews should also learn to defend themselves physically, and to (legally) own (and know how to use) firearms.

Now, you might ask “Do you really think that if some Jews own guns that will prevent another Holocaust?”

    NO, I do not.

But I do think that since HaSh-m does NOT want us to be somaiych on a nais, and DOES want us to do our hishtadlus, that part of that concept involves having the appropriate pride in ourselves as the AM HaSh-m, meaning that He does NOT want us to think of ourselves or act like a bunch of little nebishes.

Remember, a big part of the chaiyt of the meraglim was when they said they were ‘k’chagavim b’ainainu”, that they viewed THEMSELVES as little bugs/grasshoppers compared to the big, strong K’na’anim. They forgot who they were, they forgot they were the Am HaSh-m. They were meva’zeh themselves, and thereby they were meva’zeh Shaiym Shamayim.

HaSh-m wants US to KNOW who we are, to do OUR part, and THEN, HE will do His.

I have a number of feelings that I will try to summarize as follows (in no particular order)…

    1) EXTREME anger at our sub-human enemies (past and present).

    2) Some of us feel a sense of “disappointment” (for lack of a better word) at those Yidden who lost their emunah from what they experienced, – I am awed and amazed by those that did not.

    3) Terrible sadness and distress at the fact that I feel that most of us have not learned much from this horrifying chapter in our history. Every time I hear someone say “Oh, but it COULDN’T happen here”, I want to SCREAM!

    4) Frustration with my fellow Jews who feel that because (for whatever reason) the Shoah was some kind of gezaira min haShamayim, that WE don’t have to do OUR histadlus, (spiritually AND) physically to prevent it (in any form, to any degree) in the future.

You got it right when you said “iran would have much more reason to nuke Israel! if they really need more incentive!”

    That is exactly the point.

They do NOT need any additional incentive.

    If they could, they WOULD.

    If/when they can, they WILL.

That goes for Iran and ALL Israel’s enemies.

We don’t have to worry about making them hate us, they already hate us!

It reminds me of the old dark humor anecdote about WW2.

Two german soldiers (yemach shemam) have rounded up 2 Jews and are bringing them to be transported to a camp.

One Jew whispers to the other “Hey, I know they have guns and we don’t, but there are 2 of them and 2 of us, maybe we should try to jump them!”

His friend whispers back “Don’t make trouble!”.

We are in a similar condition now.

B’derech ha’teva, we could not be in more trouble than we are. All the arabs hate us, want to destroy us, and are working to the best of their ability toward that goal.

We don’t have to worry about making them “really mad”. They are “really mad” already.

What we have to do is fulfill the Torah’s directive of “ha’bah le’hargecha, hashkaiym le’hargo” – when you know someone is aiming to kill you, arise FIRST, and kill HIM!

When we act like “chagavim” (little nothing bugs/grasshoppers – as the meraglim called themselves, doing the terrible chaiyt of being me’vazeh Am Yisrael) we are making a terrible chilul HaSh-m.

THAT is precisely how wars are won. That, for example is how WW2 was won.

Yes, the world, i.e. the U.S., the E.U., the UN, WOULD go crazy with condemnations for a few weeks.

And then, ya know what? It would fall from people’s short memories, the news media would find other stories to follow, and life would go on.

BUT – our enemies would be history.
