A study has shown that the number ONE fear people have, is public speaking.

The number TWO fear people have, is dying.

That means that at a funeral, most people would prefer to be the one in the aron than the one giving the hesped!

    You wrote –

Your literal translation is right, but the figurative translation is, more accurately, “Don’t bother me” or “Don’t drive me crazy”.

BTW – MY personal favorite is “Azoi”. Not sure how I would translate that.

First of all, I think this thread should be taken down BEFORE it becomes source of lashon hara.

That being said, I will just say that the SY(rian) community IS a SYRIAN Jewish Flatbush community, it is NOT a stam sefardic community. If your wife is Moroccan, she will fit in with the general Sefardic community, but probably NOT with the SY community.

Ok, mods, now you can end this thread.

All the thoughts I’ve read here are very good.

Just try doing more learning, more chesed, less lashon hara, spend more time with your family…

I will just pass along one thought I heard…

When someone is on his death bed, he will often express thoughts like the ones mentioned above, but one thing NEVER heard expressed at that time –

‘I should have spent more time at work’.

Something to think about next time you find yourself telling your spouse or kids ‘We’ll talk on Shabbas, I’m stuck at the office’.

While the solutions mentioned above are good, how about trying to find something else for him to occupy his time with.

Ideally that might be a young lady. We are always hearing about the shidduch ‘crisis’ particularly about older females that can’t find a guy. Well, here’s an ‘older’ guy! Find him a girl.

Neturei Karta has a point like Hitler (yemach shemo) had a point.

Hitler (y”sh) felt that (maskilim) Jews were too significant, i.e. assimilated, into German culture and industry, etc. and were having a “bad” (de-Aryanizing) effect on Germany. In a certain sense, maybe that was true. So, does that justify the extermination of SIX MILLION of our grandparents!?!?!

N.K. believes there can be no Jewish state before mashiach. Maybe that may be true. Does that justify allying themselves with Jew-hating savages who aim to kill another SIX MILLION Jews in Eretz Yisrael (whether they are Zionists or not)?!?!? They are no better than the yishmaeli PEREH/adam they embrace.

    Your mother-in-law was 100% correct!

While we are in galus, the operative term should be “hatzney’a leches”. It was for this reason that when Yosef’s brothers came to Mitzrayim, we learn that they each entered through different gates – i.e. because seeing 10 such chashuv, impressive looking men entering the country together would have caused a resentment and a sinah against the shivtai Kah.

I once heard a shiur from a well known Brooklyn rav where he spoke out against those who do not ACT (never mind dress, but ACT) with proper tzniyus. He used the example of a woman who will double park her luxury car in front of a grocery, run in to buy a container of milk, give the clerk a hundred dollar bill (because that’s all she has) while prominently displaying the expensive diamond bracelet on her wrist. That is NOT the way a Yid should act ANYWHERE, and kal v’chomer in galus. It defintely just fuels anti-Semitism.

Quite right, “at the end of the day, when we close our eyes for good” neither the fancy cars, nor the expensive jewelry will accompany us to the next world, BUT those kind of thoughtless, selfish acts, and in general the way we lived, WILL.

THEN you CAN say kedusha with the minyan, and continue with ‘E-lokai netsor…’ after kedusha.

    Capt. Roi Klein ztzvk”l.

For those who might not remember, this young officer in the IDF, during the 2nd Lebanon War, 5 years ago, saved the lives of his soldiers who were close by, by jumping on a hezbollah grenade that had been thrown at them.

He did this ultimate act of mesiras nefesh while shouting “Shema Yisrael…” as attested to by those who witnessed it, and were saved by him.

    blabla…

Don’t give up because you question HaSh-m’s existence.

I’m quite sure you have never seen most of the planets in our solar system (much less other solar systems) yet I’m sure you believe they exist. Perhaps you feel how can HaSh-m exist if He allowed ‘xyz’ to happen? You don’t understand how He did this, or did not do that. All those feeelings are very understandable, but think about it… If you COULD understand everything HaSh-m does, or doesn’t do, that would make YOU as wise as HaSh-m. Would you really want the Creator to not be any smarter than you?!? I don’t know how old you are, but think about this… a parent often disciplines a child in ways the child does not understand. WHY did my father slap me when I was putting the screwdriver in the electric outlet, why was he so mean? Why wont my mother let me cross the street by myself, I AM 4 years old! –

Of course, when we get older and more mature, the reasons for these things become obvious to us. But we have to understand that even as adults, our FATHER (Avinu she’bashamayim) will also often do things that may be incomprehensible to us. In most cases we will not understand them until at, be”H, 120, we get to olam ha’ba. It is ok to not understand why, it is ok to wonder why, but just like our human parents ARE still our parents even when, as kids, we didn’t always understand their actions, we must remember that HaSh-m too, IS still there – even when we don’t understand His.

I doubt if you’ll find too many who go o.t.d. in frum homes that are yashar AND always full of simcha in their Yiddishkeit.

Not to get off the subject of this thread, BUT…

thinking that “the govt in Israel is the worst thing…” is A)not related to being, or not being, a yeshiva guy, and B)is not the dumbest thing to believe. Soliek is correct.

There are many, many reasons why people go off the derech.

But, I would have to say that the one overall reason relates to this…

People want to be happy, and when they see people who are ON the derech (usually this refers to parents or others in an influential role in their life) that, at least to them, do NOT seem to be happy, they feel ‘why would I want to live like that?’.

The line ???? ????? ????? ????? is not just a cute phrase, it is an important yesod.

As a former dental technician, let me tell you that the best way to find a good dentist is to call or visit local dental laboratories and ask THEM. They deal with many dentists and can tell by the work sent to then which dentists are generally good, which are generally mediocre, and which are generally BAD.

They are a better source than even patients are, as patients opinions are often influenced by if he’s ‘a nice guy’, if he hurts, and what his prices are. A lab will know the actually quality of his work.

    [Ha-Torah Ha-Mesamachat p. 41]

Ha-Rav S.Z. Auerbach said: If I say to you ‘Maran’ in Yiddish , know that I am referring to Ha-Rav Kook zt”l. I only use the term ‘Der Rov’, Maran, for Ha-Rav Kook.

[Sefer Rabbenu ibid. and the booklet “Or Shlomo” p. 24 and see note 34 where various testimonies to this fact are quoted]

Ha-Rav Auerbach honored Maran Ha-Rav with being the Sandek at the Brit Milah of his eldest son, R’ Shmuel, who today serves as the Rosh Yeshiva of “Maalot Ha-Torah” in Jerusalem.

It all depends on how one DEFINES Zionism.

If one equates Zionism with the radical, totally secular, anti-Torah movements of the Israeli left wing, then certainly Torah Jews should oppose THAT.

    However…

If one equates Zionism (as I myself do) with the national,’geographical’, i.e. Eretz Yisrael component of Judaism, which is a very central and integral part of what Yiddishkeit IS, then every Torah Jew, by definition MUST be a Zionist.

You don’t think so? Did you skip last week’s parsha?

Why did HaSh-m tell Avraham Avinu to go to Eretz Yisrael? THAT is Torah Zionism.

Why did HaSh-m take the Jews from Egypt to Eretz Yisrael, and not just free them in Egypt and give them the Torah to study and observe THERE? THAT is Torah Zionism.

Do you say (at least at the end of your seder and at the end of Neilah) “L’shanah Ha’ba B’Yerushalayim” – WHY? THAT is Torah Zionism.

Do you daven EVERY day “l’Yerushalayim Ir’cha, b’rachamim tashuv”? THAT is Torah Zionism.

Do you think that the Neturei Karta pals in Teheran would be hugging them if they knew that those guys say that 3 times a day?!?

Certainly JUST being in Eretz Yisrael without Torah study and observance is NOT what being a Jew is about. But just as certainly, being observant WITHOUT, at the very least, aspiring to live in Eretz Yisrael is also NOT what being a Jew is about.

We don’t cast aside the title of being ‘human beings’ because there are all sorts of horrible people that share that title. Let us not cast off the title of ‘Zionist’ because there are anti-Torah frei Yidden that share THAT title.

If you don’t mind your sukkah smelling like Italian salad dressing, garlic really does work to repel mosquitos.

Get a spray bottle (the best is the large can type used to spray a garden, but a clean, well washed out windex bottle will do) put in several spoonfulls of garlic powder and water. Shake it very well. Best if you let it sit for a while first. Then spray all around the sukkah – the schach, the walls, ALL over. The natural chemical in garlic is actually the active ingredient in the mosquito repellent used by exterminators.

    1) These people are NOT “modern Jews” with the connotation you have in mind. They are frum Jews, just not Israeli-style ‘chareidi’ (which I am sure you are not either. I can guarantee you they would not consider the way you or your wife dresses to be appropriate either.

    2) This was intended as a girls’ school, but what’s the difference? These are frum little girls.
