ct: you’re right about most modos. However, they all pay what they consider vital etc. e.g. electric, rent, heat or else they would be shut down. Salaries and life insurance should be in the minds of their hanhola, officers the same. They always manage to come up with the funds when forced. Perhaps, our mosdos need to improve their fund raising efforts and run them like a business.

Folks don’t forget that even though Trump has a big mouth and is a jerk, that’s alot better than being evil, as Hillary is! She is rotten to the core, and will be bad for America, Israel, the Jews, and the world! So he’s a jerk! Big deal!! No one is perfect, and he certainly is not. But you have to weigh the pros and cons. She just doesn’t cut it at all!!!!!

Can anyone tell me about the girls who go to Keser Chaya? Are they strong girls hashkafically? Do they have hashkafa discussions in school? Is the faculty warm and approachable? Do they approach a girl who looks like she needs it? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

higuys, my daughter had the same story. She was “disinvited” a week before she was supposed to leave. We had only paid the deposit, but the school was refusing to refund it. My husband took him to a din torah, and we got every single penny back. I’m sure a din torah would help you! Good luck with getting in to a seminary, and I hope you have a super year!

Can anyone give me the lowdown on Darchei Binah? My granddaughter is a great girl, goes to a reg. BY, but is a little out of the box. She needs a good hashkafic, less text, but intellectual kind of place. A place where she can speak to the hanhala about anything, get close, etc., a place where the girls are warm and friendly. She want to go to DB. Does this sound like a match?

this is an absolutely amazing thread. Candy, you are SO helpful and full of knowledge about the different seminaries. I;’m going to have my granddaughter read this whole thread, and we’ll be back if she has any further questions. THANK YOU!

She’s a smart girl, but I don’t think she wants to kill herself with schoolwork. She doesn’t want to be bored, but not a ton of work. She’s a good girl, goes to a regular BY high school, but doesn’t exactly fit the BY mold, if you know what I mean. She needs a bais yaakov, but not a frummy place. She needs good teachers/mentors that she can talk to and relate to. I think she needs/wants good hashkafa classes. Does that give you somewhat of an idea?

I just found this post, and my granddaughter is going to EY next year, IY”H. She is thinking of Darchei Bina (I think that’s what it’s called). Does anyone know anything about that one? How academic, how hashkafadik, what kind of girls, staff, etc. Any information would be so greatly appreciated!

Watermelon is supposed to be very good before a fast, since it’s full of water and hydrates. You should eat it throughout the day, not just at shelosh seudos.

What I don’t get is if nobody is really crazy about Mitt Romney except for the ruling Republicans, WHY is he the frontrunner?! Newt is SO much better than he is. He can put that creep Obama in his proper place in a heartbeat. Santorum is also very good. So how did Mitt get to be the frontrunner?

If it were me, I would prefer a phone call. When we were sitting Shiva for my mother A”H, people also MAILED us letters!(I know. So 70s) But they were beautiful letters, and we kept them. When I sat Shiva for my brother A”H 2 years ago, I got a lot of phone calls. Sometimes it was inconvenient to speak on the phone, so they left me a message. I appreciated it.

I hate to say this, but I talk to myself all the time! I have for years. It’s not that I talk to myself so much as it is I’m thinking out loud. I need to voice my thoughts. But it sure is embarrassing in the store, when I wonder aloud if I have any cucumbers at home!

The seminaries are very clear on this topic. If you pull out, they don’t refund. We had an instance, where my daughter was registered for seminary, but before she even got there, THEY cancelled on us, and refused to give us back our deposit. We took them to a din Torah, and they ruled they have to to refund all the money, which they did. But if YOU pull out, you have no recourse. and yes, it’s a very lucrative business!

I hate to say this, but Brooklyn has this reputation of being VERY unfriendly. They never say Good Shabbos unless they know the person. There is no out of town community that behaves like that, and the further you go from Brooklyn, the friendlier they get! I think individual people just have to start being nicer, in order to change Brooklyn’s reputation. Then maybe we can expect Mashiach!

I don’t believe Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs should have off on any of these holidays, including Thanksgiving. Since most of the schools have all frum teachers, there is no need for them to be given off. We should go solely by the Jewish calendar, as we are Jews. The few schools that do not have all frum teachers can get subs. We don’t give off on December 25 or Jan. 1, even if the teachers are goyim. If the teachers need to take off, we get subs for their classes. I think a frum school should only follow the Jewish calendar.

MDG, I like that line about the labor unions. Pretty true!
