A23ParticipantThere are two tracks- Gemara with Rashi and Gemara, Rashi, and Tosafos. I took the Gemara-Rashi one. The questions are mostly pashut questions that anyone could answer one day after learning the daf. the trick is remembering the details 30+ days later (yesterday’s daf was 39, but the test was on 2-32).
For example, during these 30 dafim, the Gemara analyzes many pesukim from Tanach and gives various interpretations (al tikra X, ela Y, etc.). For one question, the bechina had one pasuk and just asked for the five interpretations given.
Similarly with halachic discussions; it might ask for all the opinions given in X braisa or for two reasons that we might make a chiluk between different types of people in the application of another halacha.
A23ParticipantFor those wondering:
The test was in Lashon Kodesh, but allowed you to answer in English. There were about 30 short-answer questions. It was closed book and closed notes, and all you need to bring is a pen and your Dirshu ID number (if you have one).
I found the test challenging, but only because I didn’t study specifically for the test. I do some chazara as part of my seder, but have not touched some of the material in 2+ weeks. I hope iy’H to do even better on the next bechina.

It’s interesting how you always bash Obama (as here, and as with Pollard) when he has been doing the same things as his predecessor. Now, it’s true that I would expect Obama to be much better than Bush, but unfortunately he is not really outperforming Bush.
November 20, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am in reply to: Who, alive today, can answer questions like R Aryeh Kaplan? #828743A23ParticipantI also concur with the Nosson Slifkin suggestion. He is genuine and really knows what he’s talking about, from both the Torah and science perspectives.
October 30, 2011 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm in reply to: Nasi Project has a new approach, I hear. Is this a nasty rumor? #823960A23ParticipantAZ, it’s very clear that you are affiliated with NASI. Why, on the one hand, do you answer questions and talk about insider information from within the organization, yet on the other hand, request that CR members contact NASI directly?
A23ParticipantRealize that in her mind, you ‘ran away’ and left her to take on all your responsibilities in addition to her own. Now that you’ve returned, it’s not so easy for her to just relinquish those responsibilities and the residual power that came along with it.
You must give it time. It’s very hard to go from top dog to second-in-command.

A23ParticipantWeprin, because he’s a Democrat.

A23ParticipantI would say I eat meat for dinner 5/7 days a week.
A23ParticipantAs far as the Middle East:
First, Obama is absolutely not responsible for what happened in Egypt, it was the people who rose up to get rid of Mubarak. Whether or not his fall will hurt Israel is unknown at this time.
Libya, Bahrain, Syria and all the other countries where the President may have a little more to do with the situation do not affect Eretz Yisrael. In fact, if they’re busy fighting amongst themselves, they won’t be preoccupied with Israel.
Second, it was George W. Bush who promulgated the ‘Road Map’ which used the 1967 borders. Obama has never said or done one thing that weakens Israel more than Bush did. Anyone who thought that Bush was good for Israel must agree that Obama is similarly good. Now, obviously, the question is whether either of them are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for Israel. I don’t know, and I think that it would take a true expert on Middle Eastern history and policy to judge something like that.
As to the economy:
There is no question that we are in dire straits. This all stems from the collapse of Bear Sterns and Lehmann Brothers in 2007. The question is whether McCain would have done something that may have made the situation better than it currently is. Again, I don’t really know the answer to this, and unless we have a navi in the CR, I am certain that nobody else knows the answer.
Maybe we’d be in a full-fledged depression with McCain, maybe the unemployment rate would be 4%… Nobody really knows. But in response to the original post’s question, I have no regrets with my own choice.
A23ParticipantI voted for Obama and I have no regrets. The stock market is up 3000 since that day. Would it be higher under McCain? I have no idea, but the idea that Obama is a “nightmare,” as many frum people claim or believe, is laughable. Please tell me concrete things he does that make his presidency so terrible. Please tell me how McCain would have been different, and please tell me how Obama is worse than Bush.
A23ParticipantFirst question: is there anything kosher at Coldstone?

A23ParticipantGrill Bar is way too generic. Baguette Bar is a little better, but I would be concerned about people just thinking you’re confusing it with Burgers Bar.
A23ParticipantInteresting question and I would be interested to hear about this from the girls’ perspective. As a guy, all I can say is I do not think I do anything different on the date whether I like her or not.
A23Participant52-60 (inclusive).
A23ParticipantWhile Book of Mormon is undoubtedly funny, it probably the most vulgar, vile, and non-Torahdik thing on Broadway now.
A23ParticipantCharlie,
I’ve agreed with most everything you’ve posted, but to suggest YCT on YWN?? It’s completely inappropriate for the oilam.
A23ParticipantWhy on Earth should frum yidden care if the bill passes? It just makes us look bad to protest about such stupidity. The United States is a free country, let those people do the same legal ceremonies that everyone else can do.
A23ParticipantOkay, so now that he’s leaving, who do you think should replace him?
Some of the names bandied about are Mark Weprin, Rory Lancman, Melinda Katz, and Eric Gioia. All of them are Queens people. There should be some Brooklyn representation!
A23ParticipantOne can go to Brooklyn College and get a real B.S. or Bachelor of Business Administration in two jam-packed years. From the website of Professor Friedman (who is a really nice yid):
Year 1
Summer I or II Semester: Take 6 credits
Fall Semester: Take 18 credits
Winter Intersession: Take 7 credits
Spring Semester: Take 18 credits
Summer Session I: Take 7 credits
Summer Session II: Take 7 credits
Year 2
Fall Semester: Take 18 credits
Winter Intersession: Take 7 credits
Spring Semester: Take 18 credits
Summer Session I: Take 7 credits
Summer Session II: Take 7 credits
Technically, if you have a decent GPA, you will be able to take up to 21 credits during fall and spring instead of 18, so you may be able to distribute the load a bit differently.
A23ParticipantCheck back sometime in September. Appellate courts take a long time to decide something.
A23ParticipantA23ParticipantWhy should he resign? He did nothing illegal and he has always been good to his constituents and to Israel. It was inappropriate, but has no bearing on his legislative duties.
A23ParticipantTorahsEmes, there are some schools that will not take a BTL, no matter the LSAT score. Read this thread for more info: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/know-anything-about-getting-into-law-school
A23ParticipantKeep in mind that many financial advisers recommend renting over ownership nowadays.
A23ParticipantAlso, keep in mind that not all law schools (even in New York) accept the BTL.
A23Participantdeiyezooger, you should absolutely file a complaint with the Department of Justice.
A23ParticipantI think it’s disgusting that people are suggesting she say yes to people that are, in her own words, “totally not shayich,” just so she stays on a shadchan’s radar.
I understand the point, but think about the completely innocent guys being forced to waste their time here…
A23ParticipantNot a CPA, but I believe under GAAP, it would only be D, E, & G.
A23ParticipantMaybe you never met me: I say ?? ?????.
A23ParticipantI agree 100%. Maybe the name should be changed to BY Lunch Room.
A23ParticipantSpicy tuna roll.
A23ParticipantIf you’re asking what I would do, I would shave for an interview with a non-Jewish firm.
A23ParticipantMod-80, why do you feel the need to out him?
A23ParticipantThis thread is clearly self-promotion. Compare cooljude’s post here with http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/new-supermarket#post-238151
April 22, 2011 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm in reply to: If you could live anywhere, where would you live? #890954A23ParticipantFlatbush, Brooklyn.
A23ParticipantCooljude, do you have a relationship with anyone affiliated with this supermarket (or are you affiliated with this supermarket in any way)? I doubt that a regular person would be so interested otherwise.
A23ParticipantWhile I agree that there is such an idea as someone being photogenic or not (there is actually some science behind it), by looking at a picture, one can still ‘weed out’ people who are clearly unattractive. It may sound rough, because it is. I didn’t say that I use pictures to pick out the most good-looking woman, but yes, I will say no to someone whose picture is unattractive to me. I have neither the time nor the koach to go out with every single girl suggested, and this is one of the ways of whittling the suggestions down.
Pumper, I can’t say I appreciate your sarcasm. I was adding my personal opinion and don’t need to be attacked for it. I assure you that all normal guys will absolutely judge you based on your photograph. A solution I see, if you look so horrible in pictures, is to refuse to send any. One possible problem is that some may wonder what you’re hiding.
A23ParticipantI get sent a lot of resumes with pictures, and the bottom line is that while you can’t always tell if a girl is attractive, you certainly can tell if she’s unattractive (obviously I mean this subjectively, i.e., “to me”). If she has naturally pretty features, but they are altered by too much fat, she will likely look less attractive. How is that the guy’s fault? It’s no mitzvah to say yes to a girl that is unattractive just to see if her personality will completely upend the scales.
As an aside, I can pretty much say that any girl of average height under 185 pounds is certainly not too fat for me. This is not a blanket statement, but I thought I could add some specificity to this.
A23ParticipantI think it’s better than marrying one of 11 children.
A23ParticipantIf there’s little to no traffic on the BQE, taking the bridge would only take an extra five or so minutes each way. Certainly not worth the $9 or whatever round-trip.
A23ParticipantB or C. Electoral college is ridiculous.
A23ParticipantSiddur
Kosher Free
YWN Radio
iTalmud
cRC Kosher
A23ParticipantAt least those thousands of dollars are going to tzedaka. I don’t think anyone would pay if it weren’t.
A23ParticipantRaphael,
According to safety guidelines, I believe you’re supposed to put yours on first. Halachically and practically speaking, I don’t know.
A23ParticipantHow many people do you know who tried it?
