to like Levy’s real Jewish Rye Bread
The woman who penned those immortal lines that appeared on ads throughout the New York area in the 60’s and 70’s, died this past weekend.
The ads did wonders for the sales of the Brooklyn bakery.
They were penned by Judy Protas, a copywriter for DDB (Doyle, Dane and Bernbach), who suspected that advertising rye bread to Jews was simply preaching to the converted, and aimed at acceptance by other New Yorkers.
I can remember some of the iconic posters from my youth – the Irish NYPD policeman eating a slice of rye bread, the Indian, the African-American boy, all with that tag line.
