I don’t have a problem with Yeshivos using there money the way they feel like. Even if I feel something they are are using money for is tottaly unnecessary, it is there money (or money given to them to use) and they can do what they feel is right.
And many Yeshivos do very good things with the money they collect.
But here is where I have a problem. There is a big Yeshiva that has a very large Beis Medresh. And the BM has many lights. Over 200 light bulbs! And theses lights are kept on all the time. Including the ENTIRE night!
So, you might say, “Maybe Bochrim will wake up in middle of the night and want to learn?” And you are right. So why not turn off most of the lights and leave one section for those late-night learnwers?
And besides for the big BM being fully illuminated, they have two “smaller” BMs which are also left on at night!! A total waste of Momon Hekdesh!
And I many times past another Yeshiva, where at 4AM, an entire wing of the building was lit up! And the building is locked with no one inside!
Why do Mosdos feel they can waste like this?
(Though it dosen’t make the above any better, Public Schools are 100 times worse! They will leasv those big bright outdoor flood lights on DURING THE DAY! When you can’t even see them! And they throw out 100s of books each year! But that is only tax-payer dollars…)

The difference in annual cost between leaving a portion of the lights on 24/7 versus leaving them all on, is fairly minimal.
in some cases the fire dept wants the lights on all night (at least some of them)
Is there ever a reason to waste money?
Police advise mosdos to keep them on for securty purposes. Vandalism is much much less likely if there are lights on

1- it deters potential vandals
2- If the rooms are visible from outside the building, one can see IN only if it is light inside
3- Some bulbs are equipped to be cheaper ot run continuously instead of turing off and then needing 15-30 minutes to warm and illuminate when turned on.
What would be a better question is to use the money more efficiently.
Instead of incandescent bulb, use Flourescent bulbs and even start using LED Bulbs which use less electricity
Insulate the buildings more so less heat and less air conditioning is needed
Buildings can be built for cheaper utility use although they are more expensive to build but will more than pay for themselves in the long run
But that is only tax-payer dollars…
And are YOU not a taxpayer?
Why do you think it’s better to waste money taken from people, whether they want to give or not, versus wasting money from people who gave voluntarily?
Why don’t you just ask the person in charge? Maybe they have a good reason. Who says they’re wasting money for no good reason?

Terrible point. Next time a Yeshivah asks for a donation, would it make sense to say that your donation is not worth making at all as it is minimal compared to the full amount required?
No. Because it all adds up.
Keeping on light bulbs (especially flurescent) is very inexpensive. The cost, relatively speaking, is a joke.

Im sure you are a huge donor and thats why this questionable waste of a few dollars a year bothers you.
I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation, and came up with less than a dollar an hour for 50 fluorescent fixtures, each with 4 32-watt tubes.
Nevertheless, yeshivos have large electric bills. Yeshiva of Far Rockaway has a campaign every summer to raise funds to pay the electric bill. They post their bill, and it’s in the thousands. Obviously, the major factor is air conditioning.
