What exactly does this mean? Do they speak with women, wear black hat everyday, learning? Doesn’t seem yeshivish and modern mix. So confused. Thanks.
January 27, 2014 12:51 pm at 12:51 pm #1000366squeakParticipantIt means that during davening, instead of reading a Reb Elchonon they are reading Traditions.
January 27, 2014 1:01 pm at 1:01 pm #1000367mobicoParticipantHere is how one might identify them:
Their wives wear only black hats.
They say “Oy” for Cholem but also pronounce “Sav” with a hard “T” sound.
They wear colored velvet kiparkas.
January 27, 2014 2:02 pm at 2:02 pm #1000368☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt means different things to different people. I assume you’re asking for shidduchim purposes. My suggestion is to ask specific questions about the issues that are important to you, and don’t worry about labels.
January 27, 2014 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1000369popa_bar_abbaParticipantI thought it meant a yeshivish blogger
January 27, 2014 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm #1000370☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy am I the only one who answered seriously?
January 27, 2014 2:44 pm at 2:44 pm #1000371popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou did? Turning it into a shidduch thread is answering seriously?
Anyway, I like squeak’s answer best.
January 27, 2014 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #1000372👑RebYidd23Participant“Modern” doesn’t have a set definition, so Yeshivish mixes with some modern (the ones who are “modern” because they were born yesterday).
January 28, 2014 1:55 am at 1:55 am #1000373ahava282ParticipantSo none of you know, ok.
January 28, 2014 3:00 am at 3:00 am #1000374FriendInFlatbushParticipantIf you are talking about for a man, it would usually refer to someone with a yeshivish-type yeshiva background, but he would be in college and/or working, and in general is more worldly than the typical kollel man. He would likely be into sports and politics, and read the Wall Street Journal, rather than strictly the Hamodia and Yated.
January 28, 2014 4:53 am at 4:53 am #1000375oyyoyyoyParticipantsorry fif, i disagree. while i dont know what yeshivish modern means, i assume it has something to do with modern orthodox, and what you are talking about doesnt
January 28, 2014 7:20 am at 7:20 am #1000376jewishfeminist02MemberWho says yeshivish modern “has something to do with modern orthodox”? You can’t be yeshivish and modern orthodox at the same time. Yeshivish modern means a yeshivish person who has more ties to secular society than other yeshivish people.
January 28, 2014 7:36 am at 7:36 am #1000377ahava282ParticipantIn your opinions, is it acceptable for a Yeshivish “Modern” fellow to talk to women? Small talk but can be extensive…oh and married is it ok??
January 28, 2014 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm #1000378apushatayidParticipantAl tarbe sicha im isha, last time I checked the tanna didnt specify it didnt apply to yeshivish modern men.
January 28, 2014 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #1000379oyyoyyoyParticipantcalm down, its not an attack. i thought about it a little and its possible im wrong, but i strongly believe that when someone uses the word “modern” to label a person it usualy means MO, and not “current”, even if it is preceeded with the word “yeshivish”. il reiterate that i DONT know what it DOES mean though
