April 8, 2014 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #1011481👑RebYidd23ParticipantUm, they do need the money.
April 8, 2014 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #1011482ChortkovParticipantMy Shul has a learning program where they do NOT pay, and the Rav at the Opening of Bein Hazmanim spoke about Torah Lishma, etc. etc.
However, it is not so shver to give a monetary incentive — most bochurim who come are bochurim who want to learn and would learn anyways; this just encourages that they all come to a central location with a Kol Torah rather than learning at home/random shul, and stops a lot of shmuzing that would otherwise inevitably happen where bochurim meet bein hazmanim.
Yes, it is not ideal for somebody to only learn for the money. But that is not the point of these programs. AND the Mishna says ????? ???? ??? ???? ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ?? ????.

April 10, 2014 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm #1011485LogicianParticipantTake money for learning ? How horrendous.
Take your average balebos, for example. He would NEVER take money for learning. He does it ‘cuz he’s supposed to, and would love to have more time for it. Which is why the local shuls are as packed on Sundays with balebatim as they are bein hazmanim with
bachurim, huh ?!
April 10, 2014 7:35 pm at 7:35 pm #1011486oyyoyyoyParticipantits funny how people are always screaming that bochurim need to play basketball and take breaks, but by bein hazmanim they think that bochurim shud never stop for a second
April 10, 2014 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #1011487sm29ParticipantGood point they do need a break and to recharge. Maybe money is the incentive to keep going during a break. But they still need a break so they don’t get burnt out. Sometimes mundane things like relaxing seem like a waste of time, but it can actually be a mitzvah when the purpose is to be refreshed and learn better
April 11, 2014 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm #1011488GG yekkeMemberwhat about kollel? any problems with that?
April 11, 2014 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #1011489ChortkovParticipantGG — Kollel is totally different, of course. Kollel is enabling people who would otherwise HAVE to work to learn without – or with less – financial burden. That is supporting Torah. This is not people spending some time learning in order to earn money, it is people who want to spend their lives in Torah given the opportunity to do so. Yeshivas Bein Hazmanim is generally dedicated towards Bochurim who, on the whole, have no financial worries and are simply looking to earn a few dollars on the side. Not saying it is wrong (see my post above) but you cannot compare it to Kollel.
