Is it rude to yawn at home?

I listened to a shiur and the rabbi said that we should behave and speak at home like we behave and speak in shul. With the same attention and kedusha.

Does that mean that at home I also need to yawn with my mouth closed? Or cover my face with my hand?

If you live with your parents it is lacking in kibud av vem, if you have children it is bad chinuch.

Yes! I’m in between so I yawn all I want.

If you behave at home in the same way as you behave in shul, there’s nothing special about the way you behave in shul.

The Rabbi was talking about tznius and Kedusha. Yawning w/o covering your mouth is not a lack of tznius or kedusha. If there are others around, it is rude. Otherwise, it is not.

How do parents yawn at home? Sometimes I yawn and it’s not something that I can suppress, just express in a more covert manner.

just try to cover your mouth if there are others around. If you don’t, it’s not so terrible.

I’m in the process of developing an app that closes its mouth when you yawn..

you must always cover your mouth when yawning or you will swallow spiders in your sleep.

I yawned three times while reading this thread (seriously). It’s hard to witness a yawn or talk about yawning without yawning myself.

Did you cover your mouth? Were your kids or parents present?

I don’t see the problem. Yawning is an involuntary, reflex action the body takes when someone is tired. Nothing wrong with it. People have been known to yawn during the drama. Since the purpose of Yawning is to draw in a large amount of air, closing your mouth does not help

I remember reading that some people yawn for the extra oxygen even when they’re not necessarily tired.

I just yawned now. No I didn’t cover my mouth. In my parked car.

    Just yawned again!

Gosh. Umm. Yes the whole yawning with a closed mouth thing typically leads to another yawn.

Lots of times I close my mouth when I sneeze. If I don’t then someone looks at me like I don’t even know what.

Lesschumras: Some people take yawning personally.

That’s their problem. And I meant to say people have been known to yawn in shul during the drasha

It’s not the yawn that is rude. It is the “I would rather be sleeping than paying attention” that could be perceived as rude, depending where you are. Which is why I am logging off now and going to sleep so I don’t have to spend tomorrow yawning.

    Lilmod Ulelamaid,

    Did you cover your mouth?

Nope. But I didn’t make a loud ho-hum noise, which is the only aspect of a yawn that I think is rude in public (particularly during a drasha!).

Were your kids or parents present?

    Nope.

    WinnieThePooh,

For me, I yawn when I am tired but trying to stay awake. A good yawn infuses my brain with oxygen and actually helps me to stay alert. I think a yawn would only be rude if it was loud.

People are misunderstanding the yawn when they take it personally. And/or may be judging the person.

I guess it doesn’t help when people fake-yawn to mock someone who is talking.

A real yawn is different than a fake yawn.
