it used to be “ya ah ahmod ha…maftiiir chazak” the whole sentence having an exciting tune.
recently, in many various shuls that I’ve attended it goes “yaamod yaamod yaaMOD” with the capitalized part reaching a crescendo, then “habachur … ” with no tune at all, and then “maftir cha a ZAAK” with the capitalized part going even higher than the MOD and everyone oohing and ahhing at how high it was.
the thing is, it’s amazingly obvious that the first version is infinitely better than the second so let’s revert back to the good old days. (naturally this is a symptom of the new trend of fine music being confused with how high the notes are so until this malady is cured there’s little hope of reverting.)

I’d prefer a high frequency “Zaaak” than an elongated MOOOODDD”. Whatever gets you to the kiddush club earlier is always preferable.
While dealing with equally important issues, shouldn’t there also be some rules governing how many honorifics can be invoked when just calling up a poishete yid for a poishete aliyah.July 27, 2021 11:40 am at 11:40 am #1994971BaalHaboozeParticipantahhhhh! A classic YWN coffee room thread for the slow summer day.
@Participant, in my shul the gabbai still does the good ol’ “ya ah ahmod ha…maftiiir chaZAAAAK”
Someone did new newer version a couple months back and from peoples’ faces it seemed that they weren’t so impressed. Here’s hoping that version doesn’t stick!July 27, 2021 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1994988ParticipantParticipant@commonsaychel I actually do have much bigger issues which I discuss with my banker, my doctor, my psychologist, my parole officer, and my lawyer respectively. (and I won’t dare mention what I discuss with my barber…).
sorry for not discussing any of these pressing issues with you too, but I prefer your musical sympathy instead.

July 27, 2021 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #1995027GadolhadorahParticipantYabiah” Its called an aliyah for a bar mitzvah. Its sometimes performed by the regular gabbai, but in some shuls, the chazan comes up the amud to show off his chazanus while making the boychik feel like a real VIP through a really special “yaamod”. Not sure this was the minhag in the Alte Heim but it has really taken off here and in some shuls in EY.
