I can just see it- A few yeshivah guys sitting on the bus going over a ketzos, and some lady in the back pipes in and stumps them.
March 9, 2012 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm #859605hershiMemberNone of them learnt Shas, yichusdik. I’m just telling you what the Gemora and SA say. You shouldn’t find that offensive. I didn’t make up the tiflus thing. The Rashi on the Mishna in Sotah 20a says they are not meant for serious Torah learning. So does the Tur on YD 246:15. But it is straight in Gemorah and SA too.
March 9, 2012 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #859606Sam2ParticipantHershi: The Shulchan Aruch is pretty clear. Lo Y’lamed Adam Es Bito Torah. If he had wanted to say that girls couldn’t learn on her own as well he would have (Drisha).
March 9, 2012 8:52 pm at 8:52 pm #859607squeakParticipantJust as frum society believes that there is something wrong with a man who is “not cut out for learning”, it believes there is something wrong with a woman who is. There are no exceptions in the b’riah.
March 11, 2012 1:41 am at 1:41 am #859608simcha613ParticipantHershi- still didn’t answer my question. Why do they receive sechar for doing something that leads to tiflus?
March 11, 2012 10:48 pm at 10:48 pm #859609writersoulParticipantEveryone arguing that women shouldn’t learn, please put your money where your mouth is and transfer your daughters out of their bais yaakov. They are learning pirkei avos, their historia is from gemara sources, they have all kinds of meforshim based on gemaros in their chumash and navi classes, etc. Actually, when you come down to that, chumash and navi are Torah. No Torah! Bring down the chumash test!
See— I knew you wouldn’t do it.
March 11, 2012 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #859610susheeMemberThe Chasidish Beis Yaakov’s don’t teach much Torah bal peh, for that reason. And even the Litvish don’t teach the gemora stories inside from a gemora. And whatever they do teach, lav daka, who said any godol approved of it. It may very well be wrong. The entire idea of even establishing Beis Yaakov’s to formally educate girls in a school setting was approved by the Chofetz Chaim due to a shas hadchak of girls abondoning yiddishkeit. Mikur hadin they didn’t have Beis Yaakov’s for all the centuries until about 100 years ago.

March 12, 2012 1:52 am at 1:52 am #859612147ParticipantSuffice it to quote what I have heard several times directly from the Godol HaDor:- Moreinu HoRav Avigdor haKohen Miller ZTKLLH’H:- B’H that Sara Schenerir came around, and she is the best thing that ever happened to the cause of increasing Harbotzas haTorah, because she educated/inculcated girls such that they comprehended the Chashivus of Limud haTorah, and these girls then were seeking/searching boys sitting in learning, and these young ladies were prepared to sacrifice their luxuries/Gashmiyus to promolgate Limud haTorah..
March 12, 2012 3:48 am at 3:48 am #859613LogicianParticipantI almost didn’t need to check which genius it was who felt like personally crowning someone specific as “The Gadol Hador”.
March 12, 2012 3:58 am at 3:58 am #859614gabieMemberThere’s nothing wrong with mentioning someone specific. Others might have mentioned Rav Moshe Feinstein. Others the Satmar Rebbe. And others who 147 mentioned. All would be correct.
March 14, 2012 2:51 am at 2:51 am #859615LogicianParticipantNo. It does not “suffice it” to quote one person, and feel like the converation has been decided because you consider them the Gadol Hador. The purpose of his giving that title now was to show how we must listen – and that was absurd.
March 14, 2012 1:45 pm at 1:45 pm #859616gavra_at_workParticipantLogician: Is that any different than when ANYONE uses the term “Gadol”?
