This question is for the more Yeshivish people. I know that for the more modern families this is a non-issue.
Is it hashkaficaly appropriate that when the husband and wife go out together with the car or minivan that barring extenuating circumstances (e.g. the husband is tired or incapable) that the husband as a general rule should be driving rather than the wife driving the husband?
April 10, 2018 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm #1504750ToiParticipantI think you’re trying to make regular machoness into hashkafa. Most men will want to drive because they feel all the wonderful male feelings associated with being in charge. Also, women in general stink at driving, so most men will probably want to put themselves in the best position to get home alive, ie., they drive.
You’re trying to avoid taking out the garbage, that’s all.
April 10, 2018 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #1504755Takes2-2tangoParticipantIs it ok halachikly for the husband to sit in the the back and the wife in the front in a self sriven vehicle?
April 10, 2018 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #1504756👑RebYidd23ParticipantAs a general rule, there doesn’t have to be a general rule. If you have two drivers, whoever wants to drive drives.

“Is it hashkaficaly appropriate that when the husband and wife go out together with the car or minivan”
Car or minivan, husband should drive. Anything bigger (e.g., 12 passenger Ford Transit, Nissan NV, etc.) wife should drive. This is because of Toi’s point. The stinky driving, which is a liability in small vehicles, becomes an asset in larger vehicles, since people will move out of the way and you will get to your destination more quickly.

April 10, 2018 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm #1504759PhilParticipantIn non-Chasidic, yeshiva communities in the U.S., there is no objection whatsoever to women driving. Of course, a few people like Joseph decry this reality as immoral and think everyone should pretend to be Chassidim, but who cares?
April 10, 2018 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm #1504771GadolhadorahParticipantThe Saudi crown prince, who is now visiting the U.S., just announced that Saudi women will be able to drive by themselves w/o a male relative escorting them in the vehicle. I’m not sure how many Yeshivish families hold by Wahabi hashkafah but what is now becoming mutar in Riyadh b’yh might someday also be the norm in Willy and Monsey.

You don’t know me or my style. That’s okay. Just chill and understand I’m usually or at least always posting tongue in cheek.
Actually, on second thought, I am a sexist troll. Stinks for you snowflakes, I guess.
And honestly, there’s nothing sexist about saying women can’t drive as well as men. Just like it’s not racist to say that young black males commit a disproportionate amount of crimes. It’s just life.
April 10, 2018 10:28 pm at 10:28 pm #1504922Ex-CTLawyerParticipantI am far from new here…………………..
Your remarks are both sexist and inaccurate.
If women were far worse drivers than men, young females would be charged far more than young males when they purchase insurance and start to drive.
BUT>>>>16-25 year old males are charged much more, they have a far higher accident rate and commit far more violations of the driving laws/statutes.I have one associate in my firm that handles driving infractions/citations?DUI, etc in local traffic courts. 70% of those seeking representation are male.
“Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a report on gender-specific traffic deaths in America, segueing in with the fact that “many more men than women die each year in motor vehicle crashes.” It’s a fact that cannot be ignored, as studies from numerous publications prove that because men typically drive more than women and tend to engage in more risky driving practices, they stand a much higher chance of getting killed in an accident.
The NHTSA reports that traffic accidents were up across the board in 2015, with testosterone-fueled hoopleheads leading the reckless charge. Findings show that men are far more likely to skip safety belts entirely, drive while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, and speed, making crashes that much more severe than those involving female drivers”

I didn’t say anything is wrong with a minivan, they are not Mrs. CTL’s style (nor mine).
We are old enough that back when we had a carload of our own children they still made full size 9 passenger station wagons. We owned one of those. I always had a Full-sized 6 passenger sedan with 8 cylinder power.Living in the country, we did not need cars that fit into restrictive city parking spaces.
None of our children have owned minivans, they have had SUVs (with three rows of seats if needed).April 10, 2018 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #1504925👑RebYidd23ParticipantToi, are you basing this on my thread?
April 10, 2018 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #1504924iacisrmmaParticipantCTL is definitely not new here. My wife prefers to drive especially long distance trips. My sister has always been a beter driver than I am.
April 10, 2018 11:10 pm at 11:10 pm #1504954DovidBTParticipantThe problem with women drivers is not that they have accidents, but rather that they cause others to have accidents.
April 10, 2018 11:10 pm at 11:10 pm #1504946JosephParticipantCTL, your stats ignore or gloss over the fact that men have 50% more average annual miles driven on America’s road’s than women, with men representing about 60% of drivers on the road, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration. So obviously men are charged more for insurance since on average they drive so much more and are thus more likely to be involved in incidents.

They drive more.
Let’s grant that male drivers are less responsible than female drivers. In a comparison of responsible drivers, do you think it’s possible that men would come out as better drivers?
April 10, 2018 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #1504965JosephParticipantBy per miles driven, men are safer drivers.
April 10, 2018 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #1504962JJ2020ParticipantCTL – I’ve heard from at least a few females who cry and or flirt their way out of tickets. I’ve never heard such a thing about men. Couldn’t that affect the statistics?

Until Chrysler downsized with the unfortunate K-Cars, I drove an Imperial and Mrs. CTL had a New Yorker Station Wagon with a rear facing seat.
I switched to a Lincoln Continental Town Car and Mrs. CTL got a Mercury Colony Park Station Wagon (there was no Lincoln station wagon) with the twin rear seats that faced each other.Once the eldest children were no longer at home, I switched to a Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas and Mrs. CTL drove Lincoln Aviators and when discontinued MKX.
The Aviator is coming back next year and she has expressed interest in the new design.I love the 5.0 V8 engine you reference and have owned cars with it including a Mustang GT, Colony Park, Lincoln Town Car. In 2002, the dealer tried to sell me a Continental saying it was better styling and less boxy than the Town Car. I took a test drive and said no. The 4.6 V* did not cut it.
I drive less than 5000 miles per year, so gas cost is not a real consideration. I want full power, no little egine souped up with turbocharging for me.April 11, 2018 9:59 am at 9:59 am #1505062Avram in MDParticipantCTLAWYER,
I like minivans and vans, and so does my wife. And if I drove a Jaguar sports car or a super-luxury car around town, I think my face would be beet red. To each his own.

Health insurance used to charge women higher premiums than men, until Obamacare made it illegal to do so. Are you proposing new Federal regulations of the auto insurance industry… Obamacar?

No, I’m proposing the law be consistent. Either allow insurance carriers to discriminate premiums based on gender and race or disallow either. (And I’m not specifying whether this should be a state or federal law issue. As it is auto insurance is a state law issue, so I’d expect my proposal to be a matter of state not federal law.) If it were to allow either, rather than disallow both, it would effectively be a deregulation.

I was in local government a long time, There is no history of damage/accidents in our High school parking lot. Students actually have to apply for and are assigned parking spaces. It is well patrolled and under video surveillance.
Our youngest two daughters went to yeshiva high school in the morning and took AP classes in the high school during the afternoon. Both drove themselves in own cars junior and senior year, never had as much as a nick.
Not unusual for the sports teams to hold car was/detail fundraisers there. Park your car, pay a $10 fee, come out after school top a bright and shiny and well vacuumed car.April 11, 2018 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #1505344👑RebYidd23ParticipantThe majority of car accidents involve women.

April 11, 2018 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #1505476Midwest2ParticipantInsurance companies are in business to make money, and they use actuaries – specialized mathematicians – to figure out how much to charge in what circumstances in order to make a profit. Their premiums are based on how much money they have to pay out in claims for a particular demographic. So if men are charged more for insurance it’s because men – especially 15-30 – cost the company more in claims than other groups. So either they’re having more accidents or the ones they’re having cost more. It’s plain old capitalist logic.
