How disgusting is that? Whats the big deal to either put it in the trash can or your pocket?
January 20, 2014 4:45 am at 4:45 am #1212541Little FroggieMemberME?!? I didn’t. Why are you accusing me?
January 20, 2014 5:51 am at 5:51 am #1212542ShishiMemberI doubt people purposely leave it there. They prob just forget. Everyone knows its gross and socially off!
January 20, 2014 6:55 am at 6:55 am #1212543Josh31ParticipantI am blaming a lot of synagogue faux pas on coffee deprivation.
Perhaps we need to be more alert before entering the shul???

January 20, 2014 2:07 pm at 2:07 pm #1212546Sam2ParticipantWe had a thread about this. People think it’s Assur to put them in their pockets. They conveniently ignore Kavod Habriyos for it.
January 20, 2014 3:32 pm at 3:32 pm #1212547ShishiMemberWhy do ppl think its assur to put on pockets?
January 20, 2014 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #1212548golferParticipantGross.
January 20, 2014 6:21 pm at 6:21 pm #1212549oyyoyyoyParticipanton shabbos, cause theyll very possibly forget about it
January 20, 2014 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #1212550Little FroggieMemberI could think why people won’t put it in their pockets on Shabbos, for fear of walking out with it. I just don’t understand why they won’t make use of the modern trash receptacles.
Something that should disgust any other normal human should definitely be removed – CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS!
January 20, 2014 10:06 pm at 10:06 pm #1212551shtusimParticipantI once asked my Rov to mention this issue during one of his speeches. he said ” IF HIS MOTHER COULDN’T TEACH HIM< YOU THINK I CAN??”
January 20, 2014 10:49 pm at 10:49 pm #1212552oyyoyyoyParticipantk the truth is, as everyones probably thinking, that most people dont leave tissues on purpose. dont think a guy says, “hmmm… that garbage on the way out is too far for me. i think im gonna leave shirayim for my chassidim.” its more like “ill keep it under my siddur now and throw it out later” and then forgets.
January 21, 2014 12:29 am at 12:29 am #1212553always runs with scissors fastParticipantThe answer to the Original posters question is, in my opinion because either :
a) they are waiting for the wife to come along and put it in the garbage like she does so at home.
b) he is doing it just to bug you.
c) he doesnt feel dirty about it they way you OCD people do.
January 21, 2014 2:22 am at 2:22 am #1212554funnyboneParticipantFor the same reason why people smoke. It doesn’t bother them but it bothers you.
January 21, 2014 3:03 am at 3:03 am #1212555Little FroggieMemberI agree with oyyoyyoy:
I do not suspect people at large are so callous, insensitive. They hide it for the time being, forgetting (sometimes) eventually.
January 22, 2014 3:02 am at 3:02 am #1212556Someone once left a dirty tissue and a clean paper towel on the table in the bais medrash before lunch only to return aferward and not be able to find it. He was getting a little frustrated looking for it wondering who had run off with his dirty tissue leaving his clean paper towel there. He was quite relieved as he started to walk away however to find it conveniently stuck to the bottom of his gemara. How do you like that hashgacha pratis story?

December 28, 2014 11:40 am at 11:40 am #1212559MedakdeikMemberIf you walk up to his table with a clean tissue, pick up his disgusting germs iside your clean one, and then ceremoniously march off to the nearest trash-can and drop it in, – you should find he is unlikely to re-offend.
This has worked for me!
December 28, 2014 12:38 pm at 12:38 pm #1212560☕️coffee addictParticipantlol, my father in law pointed this out in my shul (yes theres an eruv where i live) and i notiiced it the next week, so disgusting!
December 28, 2014 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm #1212561GrepsilBoorvisParticipantI once had a tablemate who kept blowing his nose, crumbling up the tissues and throwing them on the floor at his feet! When I objected he said he would pick them up after davening. When there were about 20 on the floor I felt it was a Bizayon Bais Haknesses and demanded he pick them up!He told me to calm down. I said if he doesn’t pick them up I will make a Tumul! He said I’m embarrassing him but he wouldn’t pick them up! When I raised my voice in protest he got up and walked out and never came back to our shul! We haven’t spoken in 10 years !Was I wrong? Did I over-react?

Bump
January 27, 2017 3:46 am at 3:46 am #1212571Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantAs someone who has really bad allergies in the spring/summer and is prone to bad colds in the winter – if you sneeze every few seconds, it is impossible to throw the tissue in the garbage each time.
And women’s clothes are usually not made with pockets, for some odd reason. And no, I don’t leave tissues on the table, but I do have a hard time trying to figure out what to do with them, and I haven’t come up with a really good solution yet.
I try to carry a plastic bag around to put them in, but I am always concerned about muktzah issues on Shabbos Sometiems, I try to keep the tissue box in the same bag, but if I take it out to get a tissue, then I have a problem. So sometimes, I try to put one or two clean tissues in the bag, but the problem is that if they are in the same bag as the dirty tissues they aren’t really useable, so they are really garbage too, so I don’t know if it helps.
January 27, 2017 4:07 am at 4:07 am #1212572☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant??? ?? ???
January 27, 2017 4:18 am at 4:18 am #1212573LightbriteParticipantNot all shuls have tables also. Some just have rows of chairs. Plus the trashcans are in the kitchenette area. So it’s inconvenient to toss them out right away.
LU +1
January 27, 2017 4:58 am at 4:58 am #1212574Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“??? ?? ???”
I was thinking of that, but that would only help when I go to throw it out. What about when I am carrying it around with me?
January 27, 2017 5:05 am at 5:05 am #1212575☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIf the alternative is to leave it where people will see it, the heter should apply.
January 27, 2017 5:09 am at 5:09 am #1212576LightbriteParticipantWhy don’t people just use table-colored tissues?
Camouflage
January 27, 2017 6:11 am at 6:11 am #1212577Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDY – that’s interesting. I thought the heter would only apply when going to throw it out. The problem is I wonder if it makes sense to say that it’s “??? ?? ???” when I get up but when I’m sitting there it’s not. Maybe it would, but I would have to ask because it doesn’t sound so simple.
Also, that wouldn’t allow me to move it if I’m somewhere where no one else is or will be (like my room or apt). And also, while it may allow me to move it when I get up (in order not to leave it there when I’m not there), I don’t know if it would allow me to carry it around with me wherever I go. Like if I’m walking around in the same room, I don’t know what the heter would be to carry it around with me. And also, just opening or moving the bag to throw out another tissue in it could be a problem.
January 27, 2017 9:37 am at 9:37 am #1212578lesschumrasParticipantLU, on days that you have a bad cold, in all due respect, why are you in shul sneezing among people? What really bothers me is people who sneeze into a tissue repeatedly and then shake someone’s hand
January 27, 2017 12:34 pm at 12:34 pm #1212579B1g B0yParticipantLB
BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!
January 27, 2017 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1212580Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantlesschumras – because it’s most of the year. Probably allergies most of the time and not a cold though, but I don’t always know how to tell the difference. I call it it a cold when it’s winter and allergies if it’s spring or summer. Anyhow, I’m not being confined to my house every time I have a cold!!!
And btw, I don’t shake people’s hands, cold or no cold.
January 27, 2017 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm #1212581☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLU, throw it out as soon as you get to a trash can.
LC, I wouldn’t worry about LU shaking your hand…
January 27, 2017 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #1212582blubluhParticipant> “IF HIS MOTHER COULDN’T TEACH HIM YOU THINK I CAN??”
Yes. Because his mother didn’t sit next to him in shul when he did this sort of thing to instruct him. The rav of my shul had no qualms about publicly discussing this topic from the pulpit.
January 27, 2017 3:03 pm at 3:03 pm #1212583LightbriteParticipantThanks BB 🙂
January 27, 2017 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #1212584lesschumrasParticipantI should have made it clearer but the handshaking comment was a different issue and was directed towards men
January 28, 2017 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #1212586Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLC, thanks for explaining.
Maybe they consider it a chumra, and they know how you feel about chumras….. 🙂
January 28, 2017 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #1212587Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDY: “LU, throw it out as soon as you get to a trash can.”
The point is that there are tekufas when I am constantly sneezing and blowing my nose, and I need to have my bag on me all the time to throw the tissues out in and I need to carry it around with me. So it’s not so practical to talk about throwing it out as soon as I get to a garbage can:
1. Then I won’t have my bag anymore.
2. It’s not necessarily practical to look for a garbage can every time I get up.
Really, what I need is that everyone whose house I am ever in and every building that I am ever in should have a garbage can every few feet and next to every chair or couch in the house or building.
Or they should just start making girls’ clothes with pockets.
January 29, 2017 12:53 am at 12:53 am #1212588☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSo just dump the tissues out.
They’re very possibly not muktzeh anyhow. There are several ways to be mattir.
January 29, 2017 1:09 am at 1:09 am #1212589LightbriteParticipantOr you need one of those buttons that you push that pulls the lever for the floorboards to drop and bamm… no mo’ tissues
Only problem is now the shul’s got issues
So hold onto your chair
Cuz snotty rags be flying through the air
They drop to level underground
Bochurim cheerin’ all around
Now I said the shul’s got issues
And it’s deeper than tissues
January 29, 2017 2:38 am at 2:38 am #1212590LightbriteParticipantGuess what happened tonight. I went on a walk. It was freezing, so I put on the winter coat that I’ve only worn in Israel thus far.
It had a dirty tissue in the pocket! And I needed it, so I used it again. Now this Israeli tissue, from last year mind you, is in my kitchen garbage can.

That is why I don’t think they’re muktzeh.
