They mean child engagements, which are reconsidered upon reaching adulthood.

I am still my parents’ child, and I’m 25. My mother is still my grandmother’s child, and she’s in her 50s. It doesn’t matter how old your kids are, they will always be your children. So I doubt they were referring to ‘child’ as a young child.

Only 8 ads? The front page has about 70 ads last time I counted. I normally don’t block ads but did make an exception for this site, the flash animations were a huge resource drain.

Halahchically, a boy has to be bar mitzvah age and a girl bat mitzvah age to get married. But secular law prohibits kids that young from getting married in every country I’ve ever researched. In Israel, the couple has to be 18 — period. In most of the US, 16 year olds can get married but only with the consent of all the parents.

“Halahchically, a boy has to be bar mitzvah age and a girl bat mitzvah age to get married.”

So you’ve researched the law in many countries, but, apparently, you have not done as thorough research in regards to Halacha.

A quick google search also shows that your research is inaccurate as well.

nisht: He was right. Sort of. A girl does have to be Bas Mitzvah age to choose to get married.

    Sam,

It’s nice that you are interpreting his words that way. However we know that a father can be mekabel kiddushin for a daughter who is a ketana.

In addition, a quick search shows that there a number of countries which permit marriage from 14.

“In addition, a quick search shows that there a number of countries which permit marriage from 14.”

New York does with parental and judicial consent permit from 14. With parental consent it is permitted from 16.

Correct, and there are other states that allow marriage of persons under 16 with parental and judicial consent. In New Hampshire a 13 year old girl can get married with parental and judicial consent.

“I support making this world a better place for our children, but not for our children’s children, because I don’t think children should be having children.”
