Every time we have a seminary thread here the soon to be high school graduates seem to lack basic spelling and writing skills why is this?
April 4, 2012 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #866135mytakeMemberBlame texting, I think. I’m a decent speller and when I text, I ignore all spelling rules. Ex: Wish u wuda tld me abt it soonr…wuda savd me da trble.
On text, I don’t mind, but here it looks terrible.

April 4, 2012 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #866138DerechMemberIt’s write, not right.
April 4, 2012 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm #866139SaysMeMemberi actually think its an elementary school problem. In my high school you cld clearly see a difference between elementaries by spelling
April 4, 2012 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #866140MDGParticipantGo ask Deborah Feldman 🙂
Seriously, I think it’s because they do a lot of texting and email and just want to just get the point across quickly. Outside of formal writing, they don’t feel the need to write correctly.

April 4, 2012 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #866144yummy cupcakeMembermaybe the same reason you lack basic grammar skills? just sayin’ 🙂
April 4, 2012 5:03 pm at 5:03 pm #866145bygirl93Memberseriously? please can we not do this all over again?
April 4, 2012 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #866146mikehall12382MemberYou don’t need to spell to raise a family 🙂
April 4, 2012 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm #866147ovadiayosefrocksParticipantI believe the reason is simple these girls go to more Yeshivish schools (nothing wrong with that) and they don’t teach them these studies so well
April 4, 2012 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #866148bptParticipantBecause they were raised on texting (which does not do spellcheck), as opposed to e-mail (which does).
That, and the phrase, “whatever”. That’s a big part of the lack of attention to detail.
April 4, 2012 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm #866149flyerParticipantWhy dont high school girls no how to spell and right ? And You Do????
Why doN’T high school girls KNOW how to spell and WRITE?
April 4, 2012 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #866150TheGoqParticipantI misspelled know and write on purpose geesh.

April 4, 2012 5:54 pm at 5:54 pm #866152DerechMemberSara Scheneirer did NOT start Beis Yaakov’s to teach girls spelling or secular studies. They are only done due to government requirements. So it is done in the minimal way possible. Sara Scheneirer started Beis Yaakov to teach YIDDISHKEIT.

April 4, 2012 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #866154haifagirlParticipantFor the humor-challenged among us, it was obvious that the Goq was making a point with the title of this thread. However . . .
Every time we have a seminary thread here the soon to be high school graduates seem to lack basic spelling and writing skills why is this?
It seems the Goq could use some help with punctuation.

Send them all to Hogwarts. That’s what I’d do.
April 4, 2012 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #866158TheGoqParticipantlol oom.
April 4, 2012 11:41 pm at 11:41 pm #866159giggle girlParticipantI went to a Bais Yaakov school, and I would like to give you my humble opinion. I do believe that texting might have a lot to do with the problem of bad spelling. However, I don’t believe it has everything to do with it. Girls in my class who don’t text a lot are not necessarily the bad spellers. In fact, one particular girl asked me to proofread her report and the spelling was horrible. This is a girl who probably never even texted once yet. I have read other girls’ work – girls who do text (often) – and the spelling and grammar was much better.
In conclusion, I don’t believe texting is the whole issue. Perhaps some of the problem is whether the girls care about spelling and grammar or not. I do care about them. I know I’m not perfect, and I make many mistakes, but at least I try. Some girls don’t.
I’m wondering: are boys any better?
April 5, 2012 12:12 am at 12:12 am #866160writersoulParticipantEXCUSE ME!!!
This is an insult to all literate teenagers.
However, it’s not your fault, Goq— I blame the ILLITERATE teens who don’t seem to care.
Seriously. Some of the mistakes I see make me cringe (and not just teens— adults too).
My friends in other schools told me that their English teachers don’t even correct spelling anymore. It takes too long. It’s ridiculous.
And as a message to all posters on here: take the extra ten seconds to proofread and spell out all of your words. It’s not that long a time.
April 5, 2012 12:14 am at 12:14 am #866161MorahRachMemberThe fact that so many people did not realize the the OP misspelled know and right on purpose…boggles my mind!
The beis yaakov in kew gardens happens to be fantastic. They spend a great deal of time teaching math skills, grammar, spelling etc. Lets not generalize.
I agree though texting definitely has had an impact. My friend texted me yesterday saying, ” So in the end where your being for first days?” This is NOT English. Obviously i am not a fool and i can understand what she was asking, but every time she texts me something like this it drives me up a wall!
April 5, 2012 1:56 am at 1:56 am #866162TheGoqParticipantWritersoul you are certainly literate but sadly at least on the cr you are in the minority.
April 5, 2012 2:09 am at 2:09 am #866163OneOfManyParticipantRepresENT!
April 5, 2012 3:07 am at 3:07 am #866164TheGoqParticipant“I’m wondering: are boys any better?”
Probably not but there seem to be a lot more posts from high school girls than high school boys here.
Thank you to the people who realized the misspelled words in the title were on purpose.
April 5, 2012 7:25 am at 7:25 am #866165Shticky GuyParticipantBut nobody seems to have realized that what I wrote was also on purpose. I wrote that if they do not know how to spell then send them to Hogwarts to teach them to spell better. Anybody?
April 5, 2012 7:58 am at 7:58 am #866166feif the matzivMemberits really not that texting is to blame. if they wrote an exam that they would be marked on, they wouldnt write like that. its just that this is how they type when they are bored. like when im emailing a friend i would write frend, skwl, rite, nite ect. but if i was writing an exam i know that thats not the proper way to spell. its just a difference of who you’re spelling to.
April 5, 2012 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #866167TheGoqParticipantI get in now shticky very good! i didnt catch it b4.
April 5, 2012 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm #866168Shticky GuyParticipantThank you Goq. Baruch haba! Wow, I thought I was going potty for a while. I felt invisible, unable to get my point across. I was becoming Moody. Almost able to charter my own air transport at will. Until I fell off and pensievely came Dumbling down to reality. To continue my hard Pesach work, huffling and puffing, scrubbing, cleaning, slytherin along the floor, as I recall my zeida telling us “ve clear ze room vall to vall de more de better!’. Until I began to clear my final chamber of secrets: my last remaining kitchen closet. Then I can finally take out my matzo, wine and firey goblets and stop feeling like a stupid muggle. Maskim? D’acor? Are we agrid on that? Then happy pesach to you all.
April 5, 2012 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #866169writersoulParticipantGoq: Awww…. thanks.
About high school boys, just of the ones I know of, I don’t think they do any better than the girls you guys are talking about. Certainly whenever I see peerimsameach’s posts, for example, I cringe as I try to figure out what he’s talking about.
I don’t mean only on the CR, either. It’s funny— I’ve always found grammar pretty instinctive. So I guess it’s hard for me to “get” people who don’t. I try to work on that and not judge people overmuch, but sometimes I just CAN’T.
April 5, 2012 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #866170giggle girlParticipantThe Goq:
I’m not only talking about high school girls and boys. I should really have typed: “Are men any better?”
I have seen men’s writing, and the spelling and grammar are horrible there, too.
