Harambe died to save a child’s life. Why does he deserve less than Cecil?
June 3, 2016 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #1153894JosephParticipantGiving animals a name is a sick humanization of animals.
Let animals be animals and treated like animals. Let humans be humans and treated humanely.
June 3, 2016 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm #1153895👑RebYidd23ParticipantWe give places and things names, so why not animals?
June 3, 2016 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1153896Avram in MDParticipantJoseph,
Giving animals a name is a sick humanization of animals.
I think giving animals names is fine, but they should be obviously animal names as opposed to human names. For example, if I had a goat, I’d name it Lawnmower, or GrassBiter, or Hooves. My cat would be Paws, or Whiskers, or MouseDevourer. My dog would be named HydrantDisrespector, or StickCatcher.
Let animals be animals and treated like animals. Let humans be humans and treated humanely.
Agreed 100%. As the hysterical reactions to the gorilla and lion demonstrate, those who seek to treat animals like people run the risk of treating people like animals.
June 3, 2016 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #1153897Avi KParticipantI do not see anything wrong with giving an animal a name. If Adam haRishon gave each species its name why can’t we give them individual names? However, putting them on the same level as humans is wrong and dangerous. As for Harambe, how did the kid get into his cage? Someone was negligent. BTW, when someone’s animal dies on says ????? ???? ?? ?????? (Berachot 16b).

That is an inane comment. The Gorilla was killed because it was a threat to the child’s life.

Many times those who profess to be overly concerned about the welfare of animals are incredibly cruel to other human beings.
Look at the violent protesters at the Bernie Sanders rallies.
Or look at the Nazis who were so “imbued” with concern for animals.

RebYidd23 is a syntactic ambiguity troll, and you fell for it 🙂 Replace “died” with “was shot” to see the alternate meaning more clearly.
June 3, 2016 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm #1153904mw13Participant“Harambe” did not die to save anybody – he was put down because he posed an imminent threat to a child’s life.
Should we start a thread for every animal killed because they posed a threat to humans?
How about the bug killed because of humans being finicky?
Or best of all, how about a thread for all of the innocent bacteria that your body mericiless exterminates every day just to keep you alive and well?
June 5, 2016 4:55 am at 4:55 am #1153905👑RebYidd23ParticipantCecil got his own thread, and he was just killed by a dentist. Should we start a thread for every bug that gets stepped on by a medical professional?
June 5, 2016 5:03 am at 5:03 am #1153906mw13ParticipantWas anybody else thinking about this topic when we read in shul
?????? ??? ??? ?? ?????
June 5, 2016 5:38 am at 5:38 am #1153907JosephParticipantWho thinks about CR topics in shul?!
June 5, 2016 5:42 am at 5:42 am #1153908Shopping613 🌠ParticipantHarambe wasn’t 100 percent proved a threat. In the past gorillas have saved childrens ives who fell into their enclosures. He just got very scared from all the yelling. Of course though because they weren’t sure it was no question, they had to kill him. But it still sad.
June 5, 2016 5:50 am at 5:50 am #1153909mw13ParticipantI wasn’t thinking about this thread in the CR, I was thinking about the topic of how the Torah looks at wild animals vs how some people today view lions and gorillas.
But still probably not the best thing to be thinking about during leining…
