Same reason we beat women while learning Haisha Rabbah.

The better question is why do we throw the aravot on top of the aron kodesh when we finish beating them.

    popa_bar_abba, I’m sorry but you’re my favorite.

It is a Takana from the Neviim and it is a Ritzui for rain.

Do wives or girls have to shlug hoshanas?

Must she say the entire hoshanas tefila or should she just hit the floor 7 times?

    When should we beat Hoshanas?

My guess is that throwing them on the Aron comes from the minhag in the bais hamikdash where when they finished hoshanos they left their hoshanos by the mizbeach and said “Yoyfee licha mizbeach”-“beauty to you mizbeach” and regarding hitting them I saw that one should beat them only five times no more no less. And why we hit them look in the Zoyhar parshas tzav daff ?? Amud ?

We don’t beat Hoshanos. We beat Aravos.

In the section on Sukkos in Horeb by R’ S.R. Hirsch, I believe he says it has something to do with encouraging humility.

Thank you Wisey for your information. About the Zohar thing, I’m not sure I’m really into it.

To follow up on my last comment, the explanation is in paragraph 224 (Ch. 31) in Horeb.

Do wives or girls have to shlug hoshanas? Absolutely.

Considering that only 3 factors went into the formulation of our current fixed Jewish calendar, one of them being that Hoshana Rabba is never to fall out on the Holy Shabbat {the other 2 being that Yom Kippur not be Friday nor Sunday}, just so that the 5 Arovos can be beaten 5 times on the ground, this speaks volumes to me, as to how incredibly important this Mitzwah simply has to be.

So absolutely no-one is off the hook, for this exceedingly important ritual.

ZeesKite: I’m not either into it but I saw the Makor in the Yesod Vishoresh Haovodah
