Why do teens smoke?
February 20, 2012 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm #853816more_2MemberThey are exploring everything in the world on a broader perspective comparatively to an infant exploring his feet, then learns when he bites them , it hurts. Some try it at least once in their lives others more than once… Depending on personality, peerpressure, maturity… Etc… it’s a time when they have to let lose and go wild. By restricting them can be detrimental to their future adult lives. It’s a nisoyon for the parents but hopefully they have raised them well enough in their youth, and those strong foundations have amplified in the later tender years in their transition mode into eligible adults.

Or their friends.
Or their rebbeim.
February 21, 2012 3:17 am at 3:17 am #853821No One Mourns The WickedMemberI think peer pressue does play a large role. If everyone is copying someone (& presumably it’s the “cool kids”)the question remains- what causes the desire for any of them to start.
My guess would be the need to escape. Nicotine acts in the brain to stimulate feelings of pleasure. It also will work as an appetite suppressant and can relieve stress. Experimental smoking usually begins the habit. Next comes occasional cigarette smoking at parties, on weekends, with friends or when trying to lose weight. This is the most dangerous stage, because it usually leads to an addictive phase, when teens become regular smokers

February 21, 2012 3:43 am at 3:43 am #853823gubbishParticipantwhy not?
i (being 16) happen not to enjoy smoking and i don’t get any pleasure, relief etc. from it (ive tried it twice like once two yrs ago and once a yr b4 tht…) but if i did there really would be very little stopping me…

slightly valid point though, what causes the “cool Kid” to start it?

February 21, 2012 9:08 am at 9:08 am #853828I never touched a cigarette in my life and never will. And neither will my children…
Have to say that here in Gateshead, the amount of frum smokers seems to be very low, immensely lower than in E”Y. If you ask me who I know smokes for sure – I have to say I can’t think of anyone right away…
February 21, 2012 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #853829mytakeMemberSupposedly it makes them cool.
February 21, 2012 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #853830cherrybimParticipantWhen I was in Ner Israel, high school bochrim smoked because their rabbeim did, even the same brand. Unfortunately, some of these rabbeim and rosh yeshivas succumbed to the effects of smoking.

February 22, 2012 8:58 am at 8:58 am #853834ToiParticipantLogician- No, they have. I’m not arguing on the seriousness of the matter, I just think it’s funny to give smoking such doomsday terms. From his post above, you might think he was talking about Iran being capable of wmd. That’s all I’m saying.

The Addiction IS the most dangerous stage. According to the DSM IV, the definition of an addiction is “physical and/or psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, heroin, caffeine and other drugs) which cross the blood-brain barrier once ingested, temporarily altering the chemical milieu of the brain. There is continued use despite consequences.
Why are you going to extremities such as Iran to think of such dangerous circumstances?

Your comments, however, tend to be over the top. There is no need to be insulting, something you seem to indulge in quite often.

All together now:
You did a terrible thing and I hope you can change your ways and never do it again, because then you’ll die.
As an aside, are you saying that he will die if he never does it again or if he doesn’t do it again — the sentence is not clear.
And, of course, we all die in the end… whether we smoke or not — and not everyone who smokes dies of smoking related issues.

February 24, 2012 11:59 am at 11:59 am #853843ToiParticipantNOMTW- Its extremely annoying to see people who have no clue what theyre talking about who go about thinking they can explain the whole situation, roblem, and addiction to everyone else. Studies aheen studies ahher.

Of all the responses on this thread, I’d like to think mine was one of the more educated ones. Before you jump to conclusions that I have ‘no clue’ what I’m talking about and that ‘I’m explaining the entire situation’- why don’t you take a moment to read what I wrote in my first post. I wrote how the addiction starts and how dangerous it can potentially come. I did not state that anyone who smokes will drop dead tomorrow god forbid. I was merely quoting research and the DSM. Obviously I’ve struck a chord with you (based on your reaction and based on the new thread of helping smokers quit) & for that I apologize.
