No, I crossedover after the first perek. Its bec he’s been davening at places where it was hard to learn.
Also, he’s up to 73 now
January 26, 2014 4:51 am at 4:51 am #1001668HaLeiViParticipantWhat are you going to do when we get up to Rosh Hashana, you’ll Chazzer it with Tosafos and Rishonim?
January 26, 2014 6:38 am at 6:38 am #1001669Sam2ParticipantWait, I thought (assumed for no reason whatsoever) that PBA at least does Tosfos with Daf Yomi.
January 26, 2014 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #1001670popa_bar_abbaParticipantNope, actually I do just the gemara, not even with rashi unless I don’t understand any pashut pshat in the step. I know I’m missing out on plenty, but it’s still fun.
January 26, 2014 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm #1001671HaLeiViParticipantDo you have another Seder when you learn for real?
January 26, 2014 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm #1001672popa_bar_abbaParticipantHey hey, now we’re getting personal
January 26, 2014 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #1001673Sam2ParticipantPBA: Doesn’t R’ Moshe say you can’t even make a Siyum for that?
January 26, 2014 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #1001674popa_bar_abbaParticipantWho said anything about making a siyum? (I takka made one on eruvin, but haven’t gotten around to it for pesachim or shekalim).
Where does he say that?
January 26, 2014 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #1001675Sam2ParticipantPBA: In a T’shuvah about Ta’anis Bechorim, I think.
January 26, 2014 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #1001676☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOk, we’re going to have to talk about Rashi a lot so that popa has to learn it to keep up with us. Then he can make a siyum. Maybe even Tosafos, so he’ll have to make a real seder.
{ducks}
January 26, 2014 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #1001677popa_bar_abbaParticipantah. ok. Is there a yad moshe available online? Mine is at my parents’ house.
January 26, 2014 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #1001678☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMine is at my parents’ house.
So just go upstairs and get it.
January 26, 2014 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm #1001679☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI looked up the teshuvah.
As far as I can tell, it’s only a siyum on Chumash which requires that it was learned with Rashi.
January 26, 2014 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #1001680Sam2ParticipantDY: He doesn’t have a line in there that learning straight Gemara without any Peirush isn’t actually learning? I’ll try to find it when I have a chance, which might not be for a while.
January 26, 2014 11:56 pm at 11:56 pm #1001681popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m up to 79
January 27, 2014 12:11 am at 12:11 am #1001682HaLeiViParticipantPopa, the Yad Moshe has a blog (that I don’t read).
A Bochur once came to Reb Avraham Tropp (son of the Granatt) to be interviewed to join his Yeshiva. After saying a piece in the Gemara, Rav Tropp told the Bochur to say Rashi. The Bochur replied that he doesn’t do Rashi. In response, Rav Avraham chased him out of the Beis Medrash.
January 27, 2014 12:45 am at 12:45 am #1001683January 27, 2014 12:47 am at 12:47 am #1001684☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWho says popa’s a yeshiva bochur? I thought he said he left (I recall something about pounding spinach).
January 27, 2014 1:02 am at 1:02 am #1001685popa_bar_abbaParticipant78b is the mekor that there is a din shloshim by marriage
January 27, 2014 1:41 am at 1:41 am #1001686popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m caught up.
January 27, 2014 2:32 am at 2:32 am #1001687☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m very proud of you (and of myself, to be honest).
January 27, 2014 2:32 am at 2:32 am #1001688popa_bar_abbaParticipantSam, DY,
I read the teshuva. It seems reasonable that the same standard should apply to gemara and torah–that is, I don’t see why you’d need a peirush to make a siyum on torah any more than on gemara.
But I don’t even think he is saying you need a peirush to make a siyum on torah. I read that he is saying that if you teaching according to a peirush, it has to be from a legitimate one and not from the ones that are ?????.
January 27, 2014 3:06 am at 3:06 am #1001689☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think Torah shebichsav needs a pirush because without a pirush, it’s incomprehensible. With Torah sheba’al peh, if you understand pshat on a simple level, you do have something.
January 27, 2014 5:58 am at 5:58 am #1001690Sam2ParticipantDY: I always thought the exact opposite. B”N I’ll go Mekoros-hunting if I have time tomorrow.
January 27, 2014 6:14 am at 6:14 am #1001691HaLeiViParticipantDaas, that reminds me of my Cheshbon during a lazy stint: You can’t learn Gemara without Rashi, so if I understood the Gemara I must have been Mechaven to Rashi.
January 27, 2014 6:16 am at 6:16 am #1001692oyyoyyoyParticipanti think they say torah shebiksav without havanah is torah but torah shebaal peh isnt. cud be r elchanan in maamarim
January 27, 2014 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm #1001693☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSam and oyoyoy, yes, you get the mitzvah of Talmud Torah just by saying words of Torah shebichsav, mah she’ein kein TSB”P. I think that it does come out the opposite for a siyum, which, I see R’ Moshe holds, requires havana.
Without a legitimate pirush, there’s no legitimate havana in TSB”C. Try learning the parsha of tefillin or ayin tachas ayin without TSB”P. We need to learn it with a solid mesorah based pirush
In other words, Torah shebichsav needs Torah sheba’al peh. Gemara is already Torah sheba’al peh, and doesn’t inherently need a pirush.
January 27, 2014 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm #1001694popa_bar_abbaParticipanti think they say torah shebiksav without havanah is torah but torah shebaal peh isnt. cud be r elchanan in maamarim
I always took that to mean that if you read torah without having any idea what you are saying and what the words mean that it is learning, unlike gemara.
I don’t think that means havana besides what the words are saying though.
January 27, 2014 2:32 pm at 2:32 pm #1001695HaLeiViParticipantThat’s from the Baal Hatanya, IIRC.
January 27, 2014 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #1001696oyyoyyoyParticipanti hear. gedaynk nisht.
January 28, 2014 6:38 am at 6:38 am #1001697Sam2ParticipantI couldn’t find it. I distinctly remember it though. Oh well. I’ll see it again if I ever Chazer everything.
January 29, 2014 5:28 am at 5:28 am #1001698Josh31ParticipantWe need to understand the impact of a Kohen Gadol not being able to do the Avodah on Yom Kippur.
The similar situation nowadays (lehavdil, of course) is Peyton Manning coming down with a severe 24 hour “flu” this Sunday and his brother, Eli having to take over.
January 31, 2014 1:58 am at 1:58 am #1001699Torah613TorahParticipantWhat’s a din shloshim?
January 31, 2014 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #1001700☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think popa was comparing marriage to aveilus.
February 4, 2014 3:19 pm at 3:19 pm #1001702popa_bar_abbaParticipantDone. And you’re on.
Sukka starting tomorrow.
February 4, 2014 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #1001703☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAw, shucks. I was gonna call you a big fat jerk for not reminding me. Now you ruined it.
Oh, and mazel tov.
February 4, 2014 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #1001704popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t get mazel tov, because of you big fat jerks. You don’t get a mazel tov for finishing the first perek of rosh hashana plus the second through eighth of yoma.
February 4, 2014 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm #1001705☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOh. I thought you did the first.
.Any eight hour speech sessions coming up?
