    Women can. We can’t.

    Why?

All us men can never get up past zman krias shema once we turn 13. How come women can do it?!

It’s totally sexist and unfair. If there’s a rabbinic will there’s a rabbinic way. The rabbis must end this travesty and free men from the yoke of sleep deprivation.

Because women wake up to babies at night.

Because women (like Frogette) were up through the night… (OK not really.. just about every one and a half hours)

Because most frum women have to get up a couple of times in middle of the night for their babies — for a nice chunk of their lives. Most men just fall asleep and can sleep straight through. It’s a trade-off you may actually be thankful for one day.

If a nab wishes to sleep late, all one has to do is pull an all-nighter, daven at the visikin minyan (or earlier in some places at some times of the year), and then go to sleep. You get to sleep until its time to wake up for mincha. Even on the shortest days, that’s a solid eight hours.

I thought that those with a chasideshe heritage don’t hold by the same time limits for things like zmanei tefillah as their litvishe counterparts.

So, can’t they get as much shut-eye as they need?

    blubluh,

They can theoretically. But they’re always up so late. At my local maariv hub, it seems the later you go there, the more chassidish the minyan is. (A shout out for MH in Manchester)

Totally true that women get up with babies while men roll over and fall back asleep.

However how many years are women doing that for, 15-20?

Waking up for krias shema is 13 till end of life.

I thought women were patur because they needed the time in the morning to put on their sheitels 😉

Men’s job is to go out in the world whereas women’s job is in the home.

Bored_on_the_Job – The reason why Noshim are Patur in Miztvos Aseh SheHazman Gramah is because they are supposed to be taking care of their children (or when the Husband tells his Isha to take care of the children so he can sleep, Al Pi the Abudraham). So it is true that is the reason, and it is true that Noshim get up.

Who knows how many years a person has on this world?

Women in today’s society are expected to do everything that is considered to be a woman’s job plus everything men are supposed to do.

RY, another reason why we Yidden shouldn’t follow today’s goyish society.

If one connects to Torah not entirely due to pure love of Hashem, but instead uses it like a spade for something else, like misogyny, there is a risk that the person will come to disrespect mitzvos.

This thread is a good example of that.

Is waking up at 8:00am to fulfill the will of the Creator really so hard that it’s worth complaining about, even in jest?

There are plenty of cases where the man needs to get up for the kids (Ie the wife is sick, The Wife is out of town or For some reason there is no wife around like a widower or a divorcee)

Would be a shame to get to the beis din shel maalah after 120 and be asked if you followed the shulchan aruch, and find out you blew it on the 1st line.

So it seems that we all (except for Joseph;) really agree – the different natures and/or roles of men and women will naturally result in different religious obligations for members of each gender. Therefore, it is not logical to complain if one side has one particular obligation or prohibition that the other does not. Just because something is right or wrong for members of one gender does not mean that that is automatically true for the other. Each has their own role to play, and their own way to serve Hashem.

    MW13 – any response?!

Truth is, this doesn’t really bother me the least bit. I was simply trying to bring out the point I just wrote above, in response to http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/why-cant-girls-stick-out-in-a-crowd.

But sleeping late is related to a biological fact: that women bear children and are designed to care for them. Standing out in a crowd is not.

LuL, could you sleep during the entire time allowed for mincha? Like from chatzos until tzais?

L’chatchila, I’m not supposed to. But, if I feel it’s really necessary, I’m allowed to. What is the definition of “really necessary”? That depends on the person and/or her Rav, but there is more leeway for girls according to Halacha.

Rabbi Jungreis A”H (husband of Rebbetzin Esther) was known to say that babies cry in middle of the night for two reasons: to wake the mothers to take care of them and for their fathers to wake up and learn torah.

I once lived in a rural area where the roosters would wake me up in the morning.

They say that roosters wake you up at dawn.

Reality was 3am and pitch black outside.

Men can be grateful that their not roosters.

Don’t mean to burst a bubble, but that is like saying the maaleh of being a Goy is that you can eat a cheeseburger.

Also relevant is the Gemorah in Gitten 12B & 13A.

You could daven v’sikin and then go to sleep until Mincha. But why would you want to?

“Men’s job is to go out in the world whereas women’s job is in the home.”

Unless the man is in kollel. then the woman has to go out in the world and run the home.
