January 12, 2009 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm #1055177areivimzehlazehParticipantme and music= 1.
baruch levine is very popular. he’s very hartzig.
nothing can compare to MBD – he is truly the king of jewish music. if you go back and listen to his old english songs (miracles, let my ppl go etc.) you’ll see they’re all classics= stood the test of time. the lyrics can describe and touch every jew at any point in their lives… throughout generations. All his other songs still feel fresh and alive, even though they’re 15, 20 & 25 years old (no- i wasn’t born when a lot of these were composed)
fried’s slow songs can really make you break down and think/cry. he also inspires a great deal of hope and positive feelings
one boy nobody has mentioned: MEYDAD TASA (israeli) check out his latest cd on mostly music.com: Al Naharot Bavel. his voice is TOP, and the way he sings…. a taste of olam habah
Daskal is superb and shwekey has definitely made a huge name for himself
how bout oif simchas and gershon verobah: I know they’re not your most eidel singers, but they really have pizzaz and energy when they sing and i just can’t resist (my yetzer harah)
also very close to the top of the list are mendy & yisroel werdyger, chaim yisrael, isaac honig, country yossi and lipa
am i allowed to mention Yanni?? mostly music sells his cd’s- does that make it “jewish”? and if you like yanni, of course you like yaron gershovsky (like me :})

January 14, 2009 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm #1055191areivimzehlazehParticipantMOD99- i learned an even more important lesson from your actions than from your words. there are many diff ways you can be mechanech a person, but 3 are: with punishment/mussar, thru your own actions and constructive criticism. your lesson was that much stronger because you used the second 2 methods.
btw- (i feel like a rebel) i didn’t see this till now so i hope you are not looking at my previous posts from today and shaking your head thinking this went 747

to Syriansephardi:
not that its a big deal
It may be a long branch! Anyway can you send me a five gallon pail of arak?

January 15, 2009 12:33 am at 12:33 am #1055196syriansephardiMemberItzik: I don’t live in long branch but VERY close to its, guess u stalk yaakov shwekey!! And sorry I would love to give u arak but I don’t drink!! And neither does my father or my brothers!!!
Brooklyn: haha u seriously made me laugh!! U wish u dated my brother!! Haha!
January 15, 2009 12:50 am at 12:50 am #1055197Itzik_sMemberBS”D
Syrian – I’m seven time zones ahead of you and Shwekey and a 2 1/2 hour flight away from the nearest source of arak (not counting my attempt at making it from 96% and aniseed this summer). I am far more a fan of arak than of Shwekey, so there!
Didn’t you get the joke? big Deal…(not that I know the difference between Oakhurst, Elberon, Deal and Long Branch as I have never been to the area).
January 15, 2009 2:43 am at 2:43 am #1055198syriansephardiMemberwell u sure know a whole lot- knowing that deal, oakhurst , elberon….is ner=ar each other. i did get the joke.
January 15, 2009 5:20 am at 5:20 am #1055199mchemtobMemberitzik…if your desperate for arak I’m sure mordechai kairey will ship you arak (zachlawi) to wherever you are.
January 15, 2009 6:27 am at 6:27 am #1055200brooklyn19Participantlol syrian – you never know!!! you live near the kollel?
January 15, 2009 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #1055201Itzik_sMemberBS”D
mchemtob – I LOVE his arak! I used to drink the amber one and I was lucky to have any left for myself when I brought it to shul for kiddush! Mordechai Kairey is a friend of a friend of mine (and our mutual friend just happens to be the owner of my old local liquor store!)
But his site is down – is Zachlawi still out there? I just may fly in for The Big Event (and to get some stuff out of storage) and if I do and there’s Zachlawi around I will bring back a case. I have connections in customs here but if I ship it will cost me too much including at least 2 bottles out of the case to get it through. (if I bring it in personally it will just cost me the 2 bottles LOL!)
January 15, 2009 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #1055202cantoresqMemberSince the original question is not limited to Jewish singers, my favorites voices are Jussi Bjorling, Benianimo Gigli, Riccardo Stracciairi, Josepf Schmidt, Maria Callas, Nellie Melba, Titto Ruffo, Sam Ramey, Richard Tucker, Beverly Sills and Leontyne Price. Sorry, but opera singers are jsut better singers than anyone else out there. My favorite Jewish voices singnig Jewish music are Leib Glantz, Moshe Ganchoff, all the Koussevitsky brothers, Pierre Pinchik, Samual Malavsky, Israel Alter, David Moshe Steinberg, David Roitman, Moshe Stern, Zvee Aroni and many other great chazzanim.
January 15, 2009 11:23 pm at 11:23 pm #1055204syriansephardiMembermchemtob and itzik: since wen is he called mordichai?? eveeryone nose him as marty!!
brooklyn: lol yeah closish!!!!!!!!! and WHY do u no about it lol??
January 16, 2009 1:05 am at 1:05 am #1055206asdfghjklParticipantcantoresq: i’ve never heard of even one of the singers ya mentioned!!!!
January 16, 2009 2:55 am at 2:55 am #1055207Itzik_sMemberBS”D
Syrian: in all the articles about him online he is referred to as Mordechai. My friend did not mention his name; he only told me that he met the owner of Zachlawi at a show and they got to know each other so that my friend got some of the first Zachlawi available.
But is it still available and being produced?
The singers are all opera singers including some who are prohibited to men by most poskim due to kol isha issues. The Jewish voices are chazzonim mostly of prior generations. (I’d rather listen to a vacuum with a defective fan belt than just about any of the opera singers and some of the chazzonim).
January 16, 2009 3:49 am at 3:49 am #1055208syriansephardiMemberoh, could be, just everyone in deal calls him marty…… but im not sure if they still produce zachlawi, i actually didnt see it in a while but doesnt mean anything bc as i said b4 noone in my house drinks so dont really know…..

January 16, 2009 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #1055211mchemtobMemberI know for yrs we’re calling him marty hen one day i go to his house to pick up boxes and tape from the gmach(eliminate din by doing hessed!) and he tell me it’s mordechai from now on. Have to respect it….but they still haven’t moved to lkwd yet so maybe marty will make a comeback.

January 18, 2009 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #1055213noitallmrParticipantcantoresq- Shame on you. You made such a long list of opera/chazzonim with Jewish ones as well and you missed out the king of Chazzonim. The unbeatable Rosenblatt. Where’s your taste man?
