In my other thread, it was pretty much stated that a mother would die for her child, since it her child.

But who else would you die for? If you were able to jump in front of a bullet for anyone, would you?

A family member, a friend, coworker… who would you and who would you not protect?

I am not sure who I would die for but I know who I wouldn’t.

    Obama

    Bush (father and son)

Kate Middleton (although I do love following her and would be bored if she died!)

    Osama Bin Laden

    my mailman

    my UPS driver at work

and many more but I won’t post them on a public forum.

    Okay, nice thread…

I’d do it for my parents, the only thing is, I think they’d hate me for it, and hate themselves for being alive….so I dunno.

I’d take a bullet for any of my siblings, anytime.

Not married, but if I’ll love my husband anything like I love my sibs, I’d do it for him a hundred times. Same goes for kiddies.

I was ready to post a comment, but erased it.

This is too tought a question, and I don’t even think halacha would allow for it.

Good question, don’t have a good answer.

Btw, I think that al pi halacha, one must put their own life first. But when it comes to my immediate family, I don’t think I can do that.

Gotta work on myself, I guess 🙂

Can anyone confirm that halachically this is true? If yes, are there exceptions when it comes to family?

    #750244

I’m sorry to be too much of a man here, but aren’t there halochos about this? For the three cardinal sins, one must give up their life. Otherwise I think, they may not give up their life.

    Anyone clear on the halochos?

Which thread is that, a nony mus?

See the Mishnah in Horios 13a (Mishna Horayos 1:7 or 3:7), Beis Yosef YD 251, Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah 252:8.

Kind of silly thread, really. You cannot say such a thing – even if you say it now, who says it won’t be different if such a situation would occur?

Personally, I’d prefer in that case for both to die so at least neither will feel bad and we’ll go together.

In my case, it would be my wife obviously, in the future my children (which I don’t have yet), and my cats. Yes, I know some will argue I’m crazy – but so is this thread.

So, you’re ready to condemn the guy who saves a roomful of people by jumping on a live grenade?

If I saw a crazed gun wielding mad person threatening someone, I’m pretty sure I’d jump in front of the individual being threatened. I believe that.

woaaaaaaaaa whys everybody so morbid?????? lol! but i would definately take a bullet for a friend or even a random jewish person, but as grandmaster posted its technically not ok… so i guess its rly just food for thought

Wolf: Please. Condemn is after it was done. At that point we have to find merits. Prior, we have to seek to do what G- commands us to, without being more “righteous” than Him

Cherrybim: The thread is titled Mothers’ and Children’s Relationships.

Truth be told: Yes there are halachos, but most people, in the heat of the moment wouldn’t stop to think what they are and are not allowed to do when they have to make a split second decision.

If you and your friend were standing together and someone shot at your friend, what would you *instinctively* do? Would you duck away from your friend? Or would you try to protect them?

(without taking the time to think of the halachic ramifications to your decision)

Wives, would you die to save your husband?

    BS”D

Absolutely nobody. We are not supposed to die for anyone.

We only choose death to avoid the Big Three.

Tosafos actually bring down a fourth. Embarrassing someone in public.

Invariably, such things, when they happen, do so on the spur of the moment. No one, when a grenade is thrown into a room, is going to reach for his Shulchan Aruch to see if he should jump on it. Either someone will heroically sacrifice himself or else he will flee.

Yes, you can say “well learn the halachos before the situation arises.” However, I find that (a) most people prefer not to learn about such things and (b) I would hardly be surprised to find that cases vary so much that it may be difficult to formulate a general rule.

At the instant one has to make that decision you don’t have time to think and your instinct as a Jew is to save a fellow Jew so I think it is instinctive for a Man to be protective of others. For a woman to protect children. B”H I have never been in such a situation but psychologically speaking I think that is the most logical answer. From stories you hear about people stepping the street to save someone when a car is coming or something is falling from a building etc., that is my conclusion.

i would think that too would fall within the three, since embarrassment is akin to death.

the Torah says one’s own life is put before another’s. one would first need to insure their own life is safe before saving someone else’s.

Not in a halachic sense. You aren’t put to death by Bais Din for embarrassing someone in public.

i dont think anyones ever thought of jumping in front of a bullet, its more of an instinct! and according to halcha u may not risk ur own life except in certain circumstances,- now that i think about it- does Shifichas damim apply here? or is it only when they say kill this person or we’ll kill u- u have to let them kill u-
