McCann was on the defense team of Long Island mother Kathleen Prisco who fatally stabbed her husband in 2009. Her case ended in December when prosecutors allowed her to plead not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect, sparing her a long prison sentence. McCann “has a reputation for being an aggressive attorney who diligently represents high profile defendants,”

    This is frightening!

Often in high profile cases, where the prosecutor is going to be really good, the court gets a good defender also.

I think that is fair. After all, the prosecutor is not trying to be neutral, he is trying to nail the defendant.

It doesn’t really matter. At this point Aron doesn’t stand much of a chance, anyways…

Hey, Another, I work with lawyers, and its unfortunate what a sharp legal mind can do, often due to dumb technicalities.

Its easy enough to find out if his attorneys are from the public defenders office. Either way, who cares? Perhaps its his family. Perhaps he has money stashed away in the cayman islands. Perhaps the lawyers arer working pro bono. The lust for venegence is getting a bit out of hand. Is this all you have to worry about?

    OMG!

The body is still warm (no comment there) and chills are still rolling down everyones spines, and youre annoyed that people are disgusted that the murderer could get a light sentence? Ok, lets be nice to all child molesters and murderers! With time, we’ll forgive and forget.

I very much doubt that his family or any middle class family could afford the attorny’s fees associated with a case like this. I expect that the cost to run in the hundreds of thousands. Some lawyers thake these cases pro bono just for the publicity.

There was a case in Montreal a couple of weeks ago. A father stabbed and killed his 2 children… I won’t get too much into the details but even after admitting what he has done… He was found not guilty As his lawyer claimed he was insane … The jury bought it and he is now ” hospitalized” but may be out sooner than thought… The Aron case is not a slam dunk… The case Im referring to is the Turcotte case

The criminal justice system in New York seems to be handling this case well. The US system of justice is not perfect, but it does conscientiously attempt to be fair and find justice. It does have its flaws and it makes its errors.

Thus far, the NYPD, the district attorney’s office and the judiciary have done a conscientious, commendable and remarkably good job on this case.

The final verdict will come from the True Judge, but for now we need to leave it up to the police, the DA and the judge, and perhaps the penal system.

To those who think that a not guilty by reason of insanity acquittal will be easy on the defendant, consider John Hinckley, who shot Ronald Reagan. Hinckley has been in a hospital for the criminally insane for over 30 years, longer than he would have spent in prison had he been found guilty.

    #789817

Yawn. This creep will be erased from society in prison as Dahmer was. Hinckley would have been protected and seen as a hero especially by the prisoners of darker hue who hated Reagan.

A better analogy is that Jeffrey Dahmer was executed faster than he would have been had he ended up on Death Row and been able to appeal for 25-30 years.

charlihall — That is not a similar case, as Hinckley did not actually kill anyone, so he was facing a shorter sentence. Aaron will almost certainly be facing life in prison, so it’s hard to see how getting committed to a hospital for the criminally insane can be any worse. In general over time inmates in these hospitals end up getting more “time off”, visitations both in the hospital and at home with their family, etc. then prisoners. (IIRC Hinckley himself had quite a bit of time at home with his family until they discovered that he was smuggling more Jodie Foster materials back into the hospital after these visits. . .)

If it’s decided that he is insane, so be it. Otherwise, he will probably make a plea deal and not have his day in court.

The NEWS reported early on that the attorneys were hired by the family. If the court appoints attorneys for you, you get what you get. They are usually NOT high profile attorneys who are involved with indigent clients. I am pretty sure that you have to prove to the court that you can’t afford to pay for your own defense team before they appoint one for you.

No plea deal will be less than life without parole. So why would he plea.

mosherose- WOW i never thought the day would come that I would agree with you!

    #789825

Mosherose, you’re way off base. Unless you want to have Soviet style show trials, every defendant, no matter how heinous his crime, is entitled to the best defense possible. Aron’s lawyer is not simply “doing his job.” He is performing a public service that benefits all of us by seeing that justice, not vengeance, is done.

    This one’s for Charlie:

innocent until proven guilty, the right to a fair trial and competent representation are the price we pay for the right to live in this country.

We may not agree with all the policies all the time, I am sure most agree with most of the policies most of the time.

Then Aron must be a liberal.

Who is paying??? Probably the taxpayer.

The outcome of “criminally insane” cases can be scary. A couple of years ago, about 60 miles from here, a fellow on a Greyhound Bus killed and beheaded another passenger. He was found insane and committed to a provincial hospital about a half hour from here – it is in the centre of a small town. He is now allowed to walk on the grounds and his lawyer was requesting day passes for him. His doctors actually feel that he is ready for this move but there was such an uproar from the neighbouring citizens that the judge ruled against it. I think that it won’t be long before they pronounce him completely cured and discharge him. What happens when he once again stops taking his meds and begins hearing voices? What will he do next? I think about the victim and his family. A promising young man of about 22 was wiped out because he happened to take the same bus. I realize that these type of killings are different than shooting someone during a crime and the perps really are sick, but there has to be a better system. How many of you have stopped taking a medication because you didn’t remember or didn’t like the side effects? The side effects of anti-psychotic medications and the like are horrendous and a great number of patients discontinue them on their own. We are just lucky that most people with mental health issues do not go on to commit crimes. I don’t know what the answer is but I am just plain afraid that too many “cured” people are walking amongst us.
