Title. Does an organization trying to raise money, or a business trying to promote itself, get to decide who and what should be an accepted part of the frum world’s culture? (Of course, some segments of the frum world don’t believe in “frum culture” to a certain extent – at least not those parts of it which exist only on the Internet.)

May 17, 2020 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #1861612yitzymotchaParticipantIs there really mainstream? Mainstream for Flatbush in the 20s vs. the 30s? Mainstream for yeshivish vs. heimish? Mainstream for modern right wing vs. left wing? Mainstream for NY v. Lakewood, out of town etc…
May 17, 2020 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #1861648GadolhadorahParticipantI would think that CR posters are clearly on the cutting edge of what is “mainstream” as evidenced by the near total consensus here on most religious, cultural and political issues.
May 17, 2020 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm #1861658n0mesorahParticipantThe main is always relative to what the extremes of the stream appears to be. When standing on the head is no longer considered extreme, it becomes mainstream.

The yeshiva bochurim of that era that played such a major role in keeping the torch of torah alive would by today’s “mainstream” be considered left wing modern orthodox and definitely not “mainstream”.
May 18, 2020 8:56 am at 8:56 am #1861759akupermaParticipantIn all situations, the term is “relative” and subject to constant change.
May 18, 2020 10:46 am at 10:46 am #1861798hachareidy hoamityParticipantAs of the decision to who decides what mainstream is. Its the same as asking what is normal I remember talking to a nurse in miamanadies hospital who we thought was Jewish and we asked her if she is. She said her mother is Jewish and her father is Christian we asked her about her own children and she told us her husband is Christian so she will let her children decide for themselves. We asked her that it might mix them up and she said no it all right “didn’t I turn out allright I’m not so bad” that is perception of good bad right and wrong. Nthat are the parameters for deciding what can be included in mainstream. If most people would become cannibales it would be mainstream but it still wouldn’t be right or good. Even if for the mainstream it would be considered acceptable.

You should keep silent! I personally knew mirrer yeshiva bochurim from mir that went through shangchai. If any one today would be like them he would be considered an extremes. They were frum and Ehrlich tzadikim masmidim etc…they looked modern in dress but that’s were it stopped. I knew Reb Ahron Kreizer. I Knew Reb Sholoim Shapiro. Reb Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg. They spent nights up.learning because it was so hot they kept wet towels on there head. I knew one that finished the whole Seder Noshim Gemoroh 70 times in Shanghai
besides for before and after. Reb Chaim ponchos was a maloch… Please keep being silent

Left wing modern orthodoxy is also mainstream. Otherwise, remove the wing. Radical left modern orthodoxy is not mainstream. Radical means extreme.Dear Hachareidy,
Why is this a reason to be silent? It is probably worth repeating. -
