if someone is saying lashon hara is it better to cut her off and embarrass her in front of everyone or is it better to let her finish her sentence and change the subject after.

If it is in public, you are to cut her short. What is considered in public? I think 3 people is. Double-check, however, as it might be 10.

Both are a bad choice. Why resort to either?

Take a deep breath, and rip out your best, blood curdling scream and say, “a mouse!”

That’ll change the subject, and no one will be the wiser.

    try and change the subject.

say something like ”oh my goodness, a mouse just ran by” you will see everyones attention go looking for the mouse or running away.

of course if you are upstate say”oh my goodness, a skunk just went by”

try it! let me know how it goes

If you are in a simcha hall or some other professional venue, it might be problematic to scream “mouse” or “roach” or the like, because that could be harmful to the hall’s reputation.

There are other ways to change the subject of a conversation. You never inadvertently cut someone off midsentence? Spill your water (not on anyone else).

ask her to pass the salt or the pickles or ask her about her kids, husband, parents, what about those mets. anything. so you’ll look strange for a minute, so what? she won’t be embarrassed but the course of conversation will have changed.

In my very humble opinion, everyone knows what Loshon Harah is. So, in effect, she is embarrassing herself. She only gains by you trying to stop her from going further. -That’s my opinion, check out halachah first. I’m not in any way a competitor to Grand Posek PBA.

Yes, it is better to change the subject. You can say “why are we speaking about such a “sad” subject or something like that and immediately go into something different.
