Hello All,
I am interested in learning Safrus (not as a business but for personal knowledge etc.). I come from a long line of sofrim and what to continue the tradition.
Anyone know of any resources, including seforim and also where or from whom I can learn. I am willing to travel anywhere in the brooklyn/long island/manhattan area.
Thanks/
January 27, 2011 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm #1198660m. kellerMemberhi, im practicing safrus. i reccomend what i did/am doing: learn “mishnas hasofer”, “mishnas sofrim”, “mishna berurah hilchos tefillin”,”likut sifray stam”, and, most important, find some local sofrim to demonstrate some things and answer any questions you have. last, a helpful site is “ctc torah.org”.
if you ever want to be certified, the best place in USA or israel is the “vaad mishmeres stam”- 718 438 4980. before going to them, check with a sofer to make sure you’re ready.
hatzlacha,
Mishael Keller
January 28, 2011 4:52 am at 4:52 am #1198662torahbobMemberThank you for your response. What about learning all the technical aspects, like writing the letter, cutting the kulmus, the klaf, ink etc? Do the seforim you list teach you the techniques also? Also, where do you get supplies?
January 28, 2011 2:13 pm at 2:13 pm #1198663RSRHMembertorahbob: I am a sofer (not certified – I mostly write and illustrate non-STaM stuff like kesubbos, smichah certificates, parshas haketores, and other artistic work). It is of course important to learn the basic seforim, but it is equally important to find a good experienced sofer that is willing to teach you the technical points. In many ways, safrus is much like the skilled artisan trades of yesteryear – to become really proficient, you need to apprentice. Good techniques and the basic mechanics of how to do this kind of work well is passed from mouth to mouth, form teacher to student.
January 29, 2011 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #1198664fabieMemberTo learn the technical, the simplest approach is learning from a sofer, some experienced ones do training, however, I don know of a few sofrim, who taught themself.
BTW, I learned stam myself.
January 29, 2011 11:21 pm at 11:21 pm #1198665torahbobMemberThanks, how did you teach yourself? What did you need/use?
January 29, 2011 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm #1198666fabieMemberI wasn’t clear in my previous post. I learned stam from a professional sofer. I know of those who’ve taught themseves though.
You will need a kulmus, ink, parchment, a blade for trimming the kulmus.
January 30, 2011 12:31 am at 12:31 am #1198667ChachamParticipantI learned recently and I am about to finish a megillah on time or purim i’yh. The halachos I used Mishnas Hasofer and Otzar Sta”m [3 vol.]. I think that Otzar Stam is much more clear, while Mishnas Hasofer discusses everything.
To learn the umnos I learned from a sofer in lakewood who writes and taught me one and one. It is best to learn one and one then with a group especially for shapiras ha’osios. If youb are willing to come into lakewood I am sure my melamed will be happy to teach you.
January 30, 2011 12:42 am at 12:42 am #1198668MHYParticipantI saw some literature from someone who teaches courses in Safrus and Shechita a while ago. The approach seemed logical and comprehensive. I called up for information and was impressed by what I heard, though I haven’t taken any courses so far.
I found a website for him, it is http://sofrus.org/
January 30, 2011 12:50 am at 12:50 am #1198669jewish sourceParticipantyou cannot learn by yourself you need a teacher and not everyone can teach
January 30, 2011 3:29 am at 3:29 am #1198670torahbobMemberTo be clear, I am not interested in teaching myself. I am trying to find someone in the new york metro area that can teach me.
March 25, 2011 5:48 pm at 5:48 pm #1198671YFRBachurParticipantI’m in middle of learning safrus from a very good rebbe R’ Yisroel Landsman. He will come to you makom. But he just teaches the skills i.e. ksav, sirtut, making a kulmus. The halacha ayou have to learn on your own. He can be reached at 718-404-4249 or ask the mods for my email
To get a ksav kabala you have to learn 1)Mishnas Sofrim (found in Mishna Berura Chelek Alef) 2) shulchan Aruch siman lamed bais and lamed vav w/ Biur Halacha 3)keses Hasofer- Found either in a sefer called Likut sifrei stam (aprox. $24 in ny) or with a perush Called Mishnas Hasofer Aprox $36 in ny

January 30, 2012 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1198673ItcheSrulikMemberI’m currently learning safrus. Where can I buy supplies in Brooklyn? I especially want to buy those precut plastic tips for practicing.
February 12, 2016 4:25 am at 4:25 am #1198674Lefty SoferStamParticipantdoes anybody know were i can find online videos for a leftyto learn safrus?
February 14, 2016 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm #1198675ilovetohockParticipantI dont think a lefty can write safrus.
February 14, 2016 2:40 pm at 2:40 pm #1198676WolfishMusingsParticipantI dont think a lefty can write safrus.
I don’t believe that to be the case (although, I admit, I could be wrong). Do you have a source for that?

February 14, 2016 2:50 pm at 2:50 pm #1198677☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe issue is with someone who is not a pure lefty. The kesiva of an ambidextrous sofer should be done with the right hand l’chatchilah.

February 14, 2016 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #1198678Lefty SoferStamParticipantI obviously wasn’t wondering whether a lefty can write safrus or not based on my question. But could someone answer my question.
February 14, 2016 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #1198679☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPersonally, I would not purchase stam written by someone who learned from YouTube.
February 14, 2016 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #1198680Lefty SoferStamParticipantYou use a video to learn the technical writing details then you go learn the halachic aspects with a sofer. And don’t worry i only plan on selling to bnei-torah
February 14, 2016 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #1198681☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGood, now I’m not worried, because b’nei Torah wouldn’t buy from you, so you won’t be machshil anyone.
February 14, 2016 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #1198682Lefty SoferStamParticipantNo NO NO you missed my point I was saying that i would sell to bnei-torah ONLY.
February 14, 2016 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #1198683RVMemberDY: I’m surprised to see you arguing with Joseph (Lefty).
February 14, 2016 8:14 pm at 8:14 pm #1198684☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLefty, correct, so nobody will buy. Perfect.
RV, should I be surprised that a poster whose account is an hour old is so familiar with the CR?
February 14, 2016 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1198685Lefty SoferStamParticipantJust letting you know first of all a softer told me to do so second your only learning how to write the letters after you master that you go learn the halachic parts with a softer. Wanna be more machmir than the softer who told me be my guest.
February 14, 2016 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #1198686RVMemberDY: Does reading and posting go hand in hand?
February 14, 2016 10:58 pm at 10:58 pm #1198687Lefty SoferStamParticipantSo who cares if he argues with lefty. Are you surprised when he is arguing with the real joseph? (No)
December 14, 2016 1:56 pm at 1:56 pm #1198688eliezeradamMemberHi
I have actually been teaching sofrei stam for the past 25 years.
Nowadays, there are videos and even online classes available.
You can google “learn sofrut” and such, to see many resources.
