Don’t be embarrassed we all have them.

That the NYC trains will collapse over my head
November 3, 2010 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #1029786WolfishMusingsParticipantMy unexplainable fear is that even though I seem perfectly normal to myself, I am, in truth, odd, abnormal, cognitively and/or socially impaired and I am just too “out of it” to even notice — and everyone knows it except for me.

Don’t know if that counts as “Unexplainable”.

Same! Athough I don’t think that constitues an unexplainable fear…
November 3, 2010 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1029791blinkyParticipantthat a bird will drop a package on my head:)
November 3, 2010 6:57 pm at 6:57 pm #1029792bptParticipantMice. Sounds weird, because I’m not afraid of bugs, dogs, bad guys. But mickey sends into a fit. Oddly enough, chipmunks, snakes and squirrels don’t phase me at all. But Mice? Forget it. We’ve mouse proofed our house, so at least I’m safe there. But one time, one must have gotten in when the door was left open, and until I caught it, I was a basket case. Maybe if they made some noise when they ran, but since you can’t hear them, I flip when they scoot out from under the fridge. That’s my weak spot.
That, and I really can’t overcome my aversion to old people’s skin. I have no problem cleaning bathrooms, cleaning up after floods, changing kids diapers, washing greasy dishes, but the thought of handling old people really takes a lot (and I mean A LOT) of will power.
But when push comes to shove, I’ll bathe an elderly man, but lock me in a room where mice are running around? I’ll be climbing the walls.
November 3, 2010 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #1029793squeakParticipantMine is that people will make up a substitute word when they can’t think of “inexplicable”.

November 3, 2010 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #1029795theprof1ParticipantPolice. And no I don’t do anything illegal. The police in Chicago were these big gruff guys with leather jackets. And when I was 16 my friend and I who were chatting on the corner after maariv, were arrested for curfew. Since then I’m terrified of police. I shake if I have to ask for directions (also I’m male, we never ask).

Unexplainable is a word

Who isn’t afraid of public bathrooms they are nasty and germ ridden.
I’m actually afraid I will swallow a bug while I’m sleeping.

November 3, 2010 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #1029798chesednameParticipantblinky
forgive me, does that mean you walk looking up?
constantly think of it?
only think of it if you see birds around you?
it’s an interesting fear, more plausible then changing lanes, but something that rarely happens, and if it did, isn’t dangerous. hmmm i find it interesting.

I did not imagine him bald…
November 3, 2010 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #1029803blueberrymuffinParticipantand blinky- thanks for reminding me – that’s another one of my fears. As soon as I see a bird (or a flock of birds!) I start ducking, tilting my head away from the birds…you get the picture. Makes an odd one to my fellow pedestrians…
November 3, 2010 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #1029804blinkyParticipantchesedname- you got it i walk constantly with my eyes up some ppl think that its for shmiras aynayim purposes:)
No everytime i walk in certain areas where birds like to congregate (like by the train tracks) i walk by very quuickly!
November 3, 2010 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #1029805oomisParticipantMice (no offense to Squeak).
Also, lightning (if I am outdoors even for a second) and cockroaches. I absolutely freak out if I see either of those.

November 3, 2010 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #1029808squeakParticipantUnexplainable is a word
It is, but not the right word in this case. Irrational fear is probably the best word to use, but inexplicable is next best. If the fear was unexplanable (i.e. has an explanation but we just don’t know it), it wouldn’t take therapy to get past it. If it is irrational, it has no explanation (except that portions of the human mind are irrational), hence it is inexplicable.

roaches, mice, birds, and Im also afraid of those big signs dangling over each corner store on metal rods(with the store name on it)and traffic lights, that they will swing from strong winds Chas Vsholom and fall. Same to bricks from construction sights.
I also have a terrible fear from sickness.

November 3, 2010 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #1029814oomisParticipantI am so scared of mice, that when we had a problem, due to construction work going on next door, I called the exterminator, put sticky traps across every door’s threshhold, and slept in my shoes until we saw no more of them (yes, I know, you are not supposed to sleep with shoes on, but I was that scared of them !).
November 3, 2010 11:51 pm at 11:51 pm #1029815oomisParticipantI forgot to say, I am also unexplainably scared of hearing a bug go CRRRRRUNCH, if I were to step on it, especially if it is a bigger than usual size bug. I also will not eat something that is plated or in bag on the table (i.e. in a restaurant) if as I am eating a bug merely passes nearby the food, but never touches it. I am so grossed out that it was in proximity to my food, that I cannot eat the food, that was perfectly clean.

Its both rolled into one.
I’m so nervous that I’ll have to use a public bathroom when I’m out I’ll literally go before hand like a million times. I think we are bordering on OCD 😉

If you are scared of them you have more of a chance of being attacked by one. They sense fear. Dogs are very loving animals. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Or if you feel scared you can say the pasuk “lchol bnei yisroel lo yichratz kelev lishono.”
November 4, 2010 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #1029823smartcookieMemberI wasnt scared of dogs until my friend got bitten by one.
